Kristin's First Step

The first step in losing weight is to finally decide that it's something you not only need to do, but want to do. People who are overweight know that they need to lose weight, but unless you are ready, there's nothing anybody else can do to motivate you. For me, it was the moment my daughter brought a picture home from school that was taken at the beginning of the school year. She was hugging me and could not get her arms around me. I looked bloated and red-faced, and it was embarrassing. I just didn't picture myself as that fat, and when I saw it in the picture, I was so ashamed. I was embarrassed for myself and my daughters. I was uncomfortable at nearly 300 lbs. I was always hot in the summer, running the air conditioner while the normal sized people were freezing. I didn't feel like going anywhere or doing anything because I was either too lazy or too ashamed. Seeing this picture was the final straw and something inside me just clicked and I decided it was time to do something about it.

My life has changed dramatically since losing weight. It began shortly after I started losing. I didn't have to reach my goal in order to start seeing the benefits. I felt better, I had more energy, and as I began to lose the pounds, I didn't feel so ashamed to be seen in public. People started noticing the changes and the positive attention I received just encouraged me more. I gained confidence, and decided to try some new things. I joined a soccer team, then a softball team with my husband. Then I joined a women's basketball team. These were all things I loved doing but had not been in the physical condition to do them. I stepped out of my comfort zone and tried new things. I ran a couple of 5k races. I rode my bike to work, which was a 16 mile round trip. I loved it so much that I commuted to work on my bike every possible day that I could. I am looking into other classes that I'm interested in, such as kick boxing, and I would like to try kayaking too. The possibilities are endless!

On SparkPeople.com, I've found and used many of the recipes. As with most families with children, we have a couple of picky eaters, and I'm a picky eater as well. The best recipe so far was the Tilapia Parmesan, because it was a recipe that was not only delicious, but it got everyone in my family to eat fresh fish! We've tried several other fish recipes and so far, they've all turned out well. My family also likes the Applesauce Oatmeal Muffins. They're made with whole wheat flour, applesauce, and oatmeal. They're high in fiber, low in sugar, and with a little Brummel & Brown on them, heated in the microwave, they just melt in your mouth.

Hi guys,
Great job, I have been struggling with my weight for past 6 years since I let go and had Thyroid problem.
Every night after work, I spent 2hours in front of TV on my couch. I decided instead on sitting on the couch and having snacks while I am watch my favorite show (Ellen :))
I can be on a treadmill and still watch my shows in the same time.
Can you help me to find a good treadmill?
I weigh 225 pound and my budget is around $600 to $ 1000.00, but I do not know which one of the treadmills to pick.

Thank you so much
Elmira

Tinkey --

I know it's hard to find that motivation to start going -- but starting is really the hardest part. The second hardest part is keeping it up for about 3 weeks. After that you will definitely MISS it if you don't go. You just have to MAKE yourself DO IT. :) Trust me!! You will feel your energy levels raising, and then it will become much easier to make it after work. You will start to think of it as a stress reliever -- a way to unwind after your day. :D True relaxation will come after a good day working your muscles, your heart, your lungs. Start with a small goal. 15 minutes 3x a week? I'm sure once you get there you might do more -- but starting a MINIMUM goal will help you feel like it's something attainable.

ALSO! Try to find something you enjoy to incorporate into your workouts -- whether it's the TYPE of excercise you're doing, or adding something like music to your workout. I usually listen to my iPod or MP3 player while working out and it really helps add an element of FUN to it. :)

I'm zircadia on SparkPeople.com so you can visit me if you want. :)

KRISTIN! YOU ARE UNBELIEVABLY GORGEOUS! ;) Congratulations on your amazing success thus far! I'm going to have to try that Tilapia Parmesan recipe.

You guys are all so awesome. It is so good to see someone make it. I use to think quitting smoking was impossible and I did that. This other thing, weight, I have struggled my whole life with. I was 10 when it started and now I'm 53. I've tried everything and I am so afraid I will never get to be where I want to be in this lifetime. You give me hope. You look wonderful.

Hi Kristin,

I am sure your daughters and rest of your family members are very proud of you. But, believe me this outsider 'myself' salute your perseverance and strength. I was overweight when i was on a lot of medications (cancer) and barrels full of stress from my family back home. I was new to this country and all alone at age 21. I was working 16-18 hours. But, one day i told myself i have to put a stop to this and not let all this take control of me. I bought trampoline and started to jump on it everyday, even after i worked those hours. slowly and gradually i built stamina to go out running 6-8 miles. I lost about 18-20 pounds. Then, finally i was able to join gym after i decided to stop sending money back home under those pressures. They stopped talking to me and they still don't care. But, i love them and always will unconditionally. After joining the gym i lost another 20 pounds. There was nothing wrong with running on the streets, but i was concerned about my safety at night. Our body is a like a temple and we should try respecting it and keep it clean. Eat healthy to have good energy/fuel. For excercise, start with something that you like doing, have fun with it. Have faith in yourself and accept yourself. Whenever you get critical of your self, try to look at someone that does not even have what you have. Be grateful and accept your weaknesses. We are human we all go off track, but the meaning of strength to pick yourself, get up and move again. Its really not easier said than done, it is a done-done deal. You cannot love anyone else if you dont learn to love yourself. I am may be too young to say this but, believe me i have been through every possible abuse since i was a kid and all i own now is wisdom, experience, strength, gratefulness, feeling safe in my skin. We dont have to find GOD outside- He is in each one of us, we are our OWN BIGGEST STRENGTH. Respect each other, love each other unconditionally. Forgive yourself to be able to forgive others. Realize how you feel when you get forgiveness. I am 24 years old and i still have to learn alot more in life. Every day is a lesson and im having fun learning. Keep challenging yourself and be your own BOSS. I really didnt plan on writting so much just now, but my every tear drop falling on this keyboard right now is forming sentences on its own. I love life-now that i have it back, i love to love- now that i have myself back. Thank you kristin for giving everyone an inspiration and a hope. I wish you lots of happiness and good times in life with all your loved ones, esp your daughters.

With lots of love and faith in you all,
Laika!
