If you don’t know who Leona Lewis is, you definitely know her music. (And if you don’t know who she is -- where have you been?) Her breakout hit “Bleeding Love” was the biggest-selling single of 2008. It topped charts around the world and was so successful, even the ringtone was certified platinum after selling 1.4 million. That’s just the ringtone!

Leona grew up in London, and like many of today’s top musicians, she showed a talent for music as a child. As a teenager, she took several part-time jobs to pay for time in a studio. In 2006, while working at a Pizza Hut, she considered taking a break from music to further her education.

Fortunately (for all of us), her boyfriend convinced her to try out for “The X-Factor” -- the British version of “American Idol. She immediately impressed the judges -- Simon Cowell even said that of all the shows he judges, she was the best contestant he had ever seen! At the end of 2006 she won the competition, and was quickly signed to a label with Simon and mega-producer Clive Davis.
