Here’s an update on kid inventors Justin & Jared Serovich, who invented the Wedgie Proof underwear that so impressed Ellen. After their debut on Ellen, Justin and Jared did segments on CNN, MSNBC, “The Early Show,” and “Fox and Friends.” Then “Inside Edition” and “Think Big!” went to their home to film. So many radio stations wanted interviews, the boys had to schedule one per day. Probably the most thrilling interview was with the BBC, but they also spoke with stations in Australia and New Zealand. The number of worldwide websites that covered the story totals in the thousands. They are applying for a patent for their invention, but at this point don’t have anything else planned.
Justin and Jared participated in the “Invention Convention” again this year, tying for 7th place with just six kids moving on in the competition. Justin worked on the problem of hot plates coming out of microwaves and burning his fingers. He invented a cloth wrap that goes around the rim of the plate, which stays cool despite being in the microwave. He called it “Finger Friend.” Jared’s problem is that he always puts his pants on backwards. He concluded that he doesn’t pay attention when he pulls them on, and he wondered how children who are blind managed to get theirs on correctly. He tried a number of different approaches, but ended up gluing googly eyes (the ones on stuffed animals) to the front of his pants. He reasoned that if he felt the eyes or heard them rattle around, he would know, even in the dark or if he were blind, that the pants were going on correctly. He named his invention “Eye Spy My Fly,” since the eyes were looking you-know-where!
