Portia Recommends '8 Keys to Recovery from an Eating Disorder'

Ellen's wife, Portia, has been powerfully open about her personal struggle with eating disorders, both on the show and in her incredible book, "Unbearable Lightness." When she read, "8 Keys to Recovery from an Eating Disorder" by Carolyn Costin and Gwen Schubert Grabb, she knew she wanted to share it with you. This book is a great tool for anyone struggling with an eating disorder, and it provides them with the skills they need to overcome it.

Ellen Recommends 'Comfortably Unaware'

"Comfortably Unaware" by Dr. Richard A. Oppenlander is a great book for anyone who wants to better understand the effect our eating habits have on the planet. The way we eat has changed dramatically over the past half century and so has the way we cultivate our food. "Comfortably Unaware" does a wonderful job of explaining exactly how these changes have affected the world we live in. If you care about our planet, and want to make a difference, this book is a must-read.

Ellen's Book Pick: 'Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close'

quote of the day: matt bomer

I love the book "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" by my friend Jonathan Safran Foer. Jonathan is one of my favorite authors, and this book is absolutely incredible.

It's hard to tell what this book is about from the title, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. At first I thought that's how I should read it, but Portia told me it's not.

The book is about a brilliant 9 year old boy named Oskar who's father died on September 11th. Oskar is an inventor with an incredible imagination who tries to find the lock that belongs to a mysterious key he finds in his father's closet.

It's a beautiful book that's both hilarious and incredibly moving. I hope you'll read it. You can buy it on Amazon.com right here.

Ellen's Book Pick: 'Veganist' by Kathy Freston

book: veganist by kathy freston

My friend Kathy Freston has written a great book called "Veganist." You may have seen her talking about it last week on "Oprah." Kathy shares stories about people who have gotten healthier by switching to a plant-based diet, and gives a step-by-step guide for making an easy switch. Portia just finished it and she loved it. If you want to get healthier and have a positive effect on your body and the world, then this is the book for you.

Russell Simmons' Book 'Super Rich: A Guide to Having it All!'

russell simmons' book

My friend Russell Simmons has written a great book called "Super Rich: A Guide to Having it All." It's a quick and easy read, and I think you'll really enjoy it.

If you're looking to become a business mogul like Russell, or if you're just trying to follow your dreams, this book has some great inspirational pieces to help you out. I hope it leads you to great success. And if it does, I don't need any thanks, but I will take a 5% commission. Good luck!

'The Guru in You' by Yogi Cameron Alborzian

author: yogi cameron book: the guru in you

I'm always looking for ways that I can live healthier and more compassionately, and Yogi Cameron Alborzian has helped me on that path. He spent years studying yoga and Ayurvedic healing, and what he has taught me has changed the way I live. It's not hard, but it's so much easier when you have a guide. That's why he wrote the book "The Guru in You."

In his book, Yogi Cameron helps you identify some of the unhealthy practices in your life. Then he guides you to set your own goals and intentions and helps you achieve them in a way that's best for you. It doesn't matter who you are -- there's something for you in this book. Yogi Cameron has been an amazing guide, and I think you'll agree. It won't be long before you, like me, are healthier and happier in all aspects of your life.

'Sonia's Ring: 11 Ways to Heal Your Heart' by Sonia Tita Puopolo

book: sonia's ring

Ellen recently met Sonia Tita Puopolo, author of "Sonia's Ring: 11 Ways to Heal Your Heart." It's an amazing story of how a daughter lost her mother during 9/11, but later recovered her ring in the rubble. It gave Sonia the power to heal and now she wants to share how she did it. It's a story worth knowing about. You can find out more about the book here.

'The Safe Dog Handbook' by Melanie Monteiro

Dogs are a loving part of the family and it's important to make sure they are safe. Each year, thousands of dogs are hurt or killed by easily preventable accidents. Dog-lover Melanie Monteiro learned this the hard way when she adopted an accident-prone Labrador puppy. She realized that there was little information easily available, so she created a great book called "The Safe Dog Handbook."

The handy resource includes tips to puppy-proofing your home, first aid information, guides to toxic plants and much more, and is essential for any dog owner who wants to ensure their pet is safe. Melanie also has a series of instructional YouTube videos on a variety of topics. If you live near Los Angeles or Central Oregon, you can also take one of her educational seminars. You can buy her book directly from Amazon, or get more information about all of her services on her website.

Ellen's New Book Pick: 'Rise and Shine'

rise and shine

Ellen just finished reading "Rise and Shine," a first-hand account of author Simon Lewis' terrible car accident and his long and inspiring road to recovery. The book details Lewis' intense rehabilitation, which took him through more than 15 years of treatments, therapies (Ellen's mother, Betty DeGeneres, was Lewis' speech therapist), and insurance debacles.

Through it all, Lewis is able to marvel at the miracle of life, and offers lessons that can touch your heart and raise awareness about how to fight for your survival.

'The Conscious Cook' by Chef Tal Ronnen

the conscious cook
Switching to a vegan diet can be difficult for someone who loves meat, as Chef Tal Ronnen knows personally. After struggling with existing vegan meals, he decided to create a cookbook filled with recipes that any meat-lover will enjoy.

Using traditional techniques with meatless ingredients, he was able to create flavorful dishes that are both healthy and satisfying. With facts, tips, and hints about vegan foods interspersed between 70 recipes, this cookbook is perfect for the beginner who is learning about vegan foods, and is a great resource for experienced chefs.

'Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows' by Melanie Joy

why we love dogs, eat pigs, and wear cows
Author Melanie Joy takes a look at the debate over our diets -- from a psychological and social perspective. She argues that the simple act of naming someone a vegetarian or vegan without a specific name for meat-eaters automatically makes eating meat "normal."

This sidesteps the ultimate truth -- we make the choice to eat meat. With an out-of-sight, out-of-mind mentality, we continue to believe stereotypes about certain animals and ignore their suffering to placate our decision to eat meat. This book will change the way you think about your food.

'The Life & Love of Trees' by Lewis Blackwell

The Life & Love of TreesA combination of gorgeous photos and wonderfully written essays, Lewis Blackwell takes a look at something we all see but rarely look at -- the tree. Take a look at this book and you'll never see a tree the same way again.

'Eating Animals' by Jonathan Safran Foer

Eating AnimalsJonathan Safran Foer reflects on his past dietary decisions and investigates the fictions we use to justify our eating habits. He combines philosophy, literature, science, memoir and detective work to create a compelling book.

After Jonathan Safran Foer's appearance on the show this week, he sent me a sweet thank-you note, and this link. If you found him as compelling as I do, please check it out. Thanks.
