Unity Day on Ellen

ellen's message about bullying

Today I wore orange on my show for a very special reason. Pacer.org has organized an incredible movement to put an end to bullying. It's called Unity Day. Today we send a message to anyone being bullied that they're not alone. Because the truth is no one who's being bullied is alone. Just about everyone has been bullied at some point, and nobody likes it. Let's stop hurting one another and try to appreciate the things that make us different.

Today, I stand united with anyone who supports students who are being bullied. You can show the world that you're standing with me today by wearing orange. That's why I wore orange on my show. That, and it brings out the bronze tones in my complexion.

I hope you'll stand up to bullying with me. If you want more information about Unity Day, please visit www.pacer.org/bullying.

Bullying can effect how a child performs in school, stays in school and remains with them through out their lifetime. Their self esteem is effected and it becomes a constant mission in their life to be perfect...a lot of unnecessary pressure. If people would just place themselves in the victims shoes for that moment, they may begin to realize the harm and hurt they have caused. The absence of parental support, and added abuse from them is devastating. So please before you speak.THINK.Before you strike.BREATH!

there's no rosean a child can't defend him or herself !! as far as suspensions there foolish and do no good !!

wow sletnay t son should have not got sespendid he had to defend him self thats what everyone would do.

NEED HELP WITH BULLYING AND NON POLICIES IN SANDPOINT, ID PONDEREY SCHOOL DISTRICT #84

Grand daughter has been Bullied for two years at the same school. She hasn't been invited to sleep overs or parties. my daughter has her now in counseling to help her deal with all of this. Teacher called her a Drama Queen, Principal has done nothing!!

my 14 year old son weighing in@ 140 wet. was attacked twice in one day from a Bully 6'3" 250 pounds. shoved so hard against a wall that he got a concussion. The school never called us at any time. Our son missed two days of school and wasn't able to practice or play BBall. Kid allowed to come back to school the next day and beat up another kid in his class. He was then expelled for two days. The school did NOTHING FOR OUR SON!!!! we were told today that actually the Bully has more rights than the abused person. there is something really wrong with this picture. So this Bully is allowed back into the High School-with them knowing he is a walking time bomb. We are not sure which road to take. Do we go after the school, the state. I asked for the Rules on Bullying our District has in Place. I sent an email that was at 7 pm last night. they still haven't responded. Our children are force to go to school where they are not protected. HELP

The answer of an erxept. Good to hear from you.

My son had been bullied all his life due to his weight. As a senior in high school he took it upon himself to shed his weight and also do something proactive about bullying. He and I wrote a children's book series "CookieTales" each book contains a anti bullying message. Please help us spread our work nationwide. www.cookietales.com

I have many thoughts and feelings on bullying. So to make it easier for me and others, I'd like to say it in a song. This song I wrote after being inspired by Sirdeaner Walker on Extreme Makeover, Home Edition. This is a healing and empathetic song which I hope will help others understand and cope.
Please listen to it at this You Tube link.

Yours truly,
Robert Laurie

Hi Ellen,

My daughter was bullied beginning in the 4th grade through the 8th grade when she had finally had enough. There was a group of girls (6) who for years spread rumors and made comments about her. In 8th grade a girl went as far as to scatch her neck herself and then went to the principle and accused my daughter of doing it. Luckily there was another student in the bathroom at the time my daughter was there and came forward and told the truth. But it didn't stop there. Half way through her 8th grade year another one of the girls was calling her names, and my daughter had had enough and smacked her. I don't condone violence but in this case, I stood up for my daughter and even though she was suspended for 3 days, the other girl was suspended for 2 days, but ever since that day they have pretty much left her alone. My daughter is graduating a year early to get away from these kids because she hates being around them. She comes home daily telling me things that go on in school and I just can't believe what these kids are allowed to get away with. Today they had an assembly and there were kids from another school there to sing. They were autistic children and my daughter almost got into a fight because there were kids making fun of them. I don't know what some parents are doing at home, but it sure isn't teaching there kids to be respectful of others. I've always told my daughter to treat people the way she wants to be treated, and to stand up for those who can't or won't stand up for themselves. She is a bright and caring young woman and will be going to college in the fall of 2012. She is a year ahead of the bullies she dealt with for 4 years and so happy to be getting away from them. She is the light of my life and I will always stand up for her because she stands up for those that sometimes can't. I'm very proud of the young woman she is and can't wait to see what the future holds for her. She makes me proud everyday because of who she is, and what she stands for. She is a voice against bullying and that makes me very proud. Thanks so much for your stand against bullies and hopefully more people will join this movement against bullying.

Why dont we have a bullying form for every school in the country, that every student has to turn in nameless and filled out or not every week. This way even the bullies are turning one in and no one knows whos telling, the children that are afraid of speaking up dont have to be afraid anymore. The bullies dont know if one person is speaking up or everyone is, and the proper people will know whats going on and deal with it before it gets out of hand. Put bullies in their place and let them know that everyone wont tolerate it.

I'm so proud of my sister, she just wrote a book called (Bully Free School). It's geared for the younger children. Easy to read and understand. Her name is Mirian RS Daniels. She also is a principal of a elementary school in SC.

Ellen,
Can't say enough about your support for PACER Org.
I just lost my 14 year old son less than three weeks ago. He was not bullied but he was a bystander who carried a heavy load on his shoulders trying to stop all the teasing etc. that was going on. It is sad to say that when we choose the PACER Org the school was insulted instead of happy that we choose an organization that could be a resource to them. The last thing I told my son before he passed was that I would continue to fight his cause and make things better and that I will do thru PACER.

Thank you Ellen for all you do to help many, many people. I too am a product of bullies. Everyday in high school I was picked on. I came from a 1 room school, 8 grades, then to a high school of 800 kids. My dad had guns and i never thought to use one at school. I was lucky my parents taught us Do unto Others. I know things are different these days, but there is no excuse that parents dont pay attention to their kids. Teach them from little on to be nice to others. I know there are exceptions, but the main thing parents and teaches can do is treat kids like people. Talk to them and spend a little time with these little people because they are the future.

Ellen, I just want to say that I'm glad to live in the same world you live in, I'm sitting watching the episode of Home Makeover about bullying, the Carl Walker story. I hope because of this show, your show and all the other shows who are trying to end this horrible epidemic get the message out that WORDS can kill, and I also want to say I'm sorry to all the people I bullied as a kid. I hated my self so much I thought if I hurt other people I wouldn't hurt any more, that is no excuse but at the time I didn't have the coping skills to do the right thing. With your show you are getting the message out and educating the world it is wrong to bully.

Hi Ellen,

I think a good book that everyone should read is "Nineteen Mintues" by Jodi Picoult!! Its about what can happen when someone gets bulled. It is sad what kids go through growing up. Meghan

My son Laikin who is 6 years old has took the pledge to end bullying !! So proud of him !!

I've been bullied all my life by family and peers, in the work place, online and in college. It seems that if someone doesn't like you or you don't fit in that you will be bullied. People can lie and say "you mis understood them" or say you are just to sensitive, and the bullying will be overlooked. When you are bullied, others look upon you as unimportant. Everyone likes to look the other way. I relive the bullying all the time. I'm afraid to go out, or socialize. I'm always afraid of that next round of bullying. Even going for counceling, I've been bullied by the councelors. So it just doesn't stop. and I'm afraid, never will. I was even bullied by a staff member on the dr phil show. I wrote in asking for help and a lady by the name of carla pennington stewart told me I was not fit to be on the show. So it has never stopped, and never will.

It's important to get the bi-standers to stand up. Bullies only bully when they feel they have the power...and people standing by and being silent is how they get their power. It was a very powerful day when my son and his friends stood up at their high school against the bullies by wearing pink t-shirts to send the message. They had a large number of students support by getting them to wear the pink t-shirts that they purchased. We all need to do this...
