Marlo Thomas' Message Against Bullying

Ellen's good friend Marlo Thomas has created a great new resource to help kids and parents protect against bullying. It's an anti-bullying campaign to help parents communicate with their children, whether they are being bullied, they are the bully, or they're a bystander. Watch the touching video right here. You can also get involved at StopBullying.gov.

Hi Ellen,
i am the mother of 2 boys. my oldest who is now 12 was bullied from the age of 6 years. We went to the school numerous times to get this dealt with but nothing ever came of it. He went to a public school(canadian) which also served as an ESL school. It had become so bad that my son had suicidal thoughts. We got him help and we spoke to him often about this. The school would not act and help as they were affraid of getting sued for racism, their solution was to send my child to the office in order to remove him from the situation instead of removing the bully..Our last meeting with the asistant principal took place 2 years ago and resulted in us pulling both our boys out of school. My boys now both go to a catholic school and are thriving! My oldest has even put himself on the honor role.. Though he sometimes has problems with teasing, he is more able to deal with it and the school has a zero tolerance for it. My heart aches for the ones who aren't so lucky.I make it a point to let everyone know that bullying is wrong and needs to stop and EVERYONE needs to band together

and for people who does bullying, remember, you won't like it if one day you find your child or children suffer under bullying and kill themselves. So better rethink about this. we are all living in the same world with same rights and obligation. why make it harder or superior?

I was bullied last year and I didn't like it, I even had nightmares that made me cry all night, because I was weird looking and different but I told my parents and sisters and they said I was not weird, that really I was unique. and that gave me confidence.

i used to get bullied when i was in 1st grade but now i faced my bully and he never bullied me again!

I am a mother of 2 wonderful boys. My oldest has ADD/ADHD. He is in middle school about to go to high school. He was being bullied and I didn't know about it. I always talk with them but he felt threaten by the bully and didn't want to say anything due to fear. One night he started crying uncontrollably when I told him it was time to go to bed because the following day they had school. He was crying and rocking himself. I had never seen him like that. He had an expression on his face that I can't even describe (and just remembering about it, it brings tears to my eyes again). That night I stayed with him until he felt comfortable and spoke with him about 'bullying' that it is a very serious matter. The next day I spoke with the dean of the school he attends and told him what was going on. I told and reassure my son that he had the power to stop what was going on and that nothing bad would happen. The dean and counselor spoke with my son too and reassure him that he wasn't doing anything bad and it was a serious matter. After school when I picked him up... he was his usual happy self boy again. He spoke with the kid who was being the 'bully' and after several months they became good acquaintances. Things did get better!! I am thankful to God for having given me the understanding I needed and also for all those wonderful professional people that we have in our communities to help us become better parents so that we can help our children when they are going through something difficult.

I am a mother of 2 wonderful boys. As a teenager I was bullied and was scared when my oldest started school. Imagine the horror when in first grade he started getting bullied. Going to the school to work it out did no good, they don't like to get involved. Plus when it's a teachers son who is doing the bullying, they look the other way, which in my mind is BS! There are good days and bad days for him, but I will not let this go on. It is a daily battle I will continue to fight. I know how it feels and no child, teenager or adult, deserves this kind of treatment. People need to learn to stand up, get involved and put an end to bullying.

My son had been bullied all his life. He and I wrote a Children's book series "Cookietales" each book contains a great message about the importance of accepting our differences, being kind to one another, and the gift of true friendship. We are trying to get our book series into every school district across the country. If you can help please do! www.cookietales.com or email steven@cookietales.com

Hi Ellen, I was bullied as a child. I am now 62 years old. I was pushed off a streetcar and injured. I went to court.
I was constantly bullied in my workplace. I was an educational assistant in various schools. I was bullied and harassed by teachers and principals.
I actually went on antidepressants for anxiety. I decided to take an early retirement because of the bullying.
How can we eradicate bullying in schools when the adults are doing it themselves. How can they be role models.
I never ate my lunch in the staff rooms because I was sick and tired listening to teachers talk negatively about their students and the parents.
If parents ever knew they would be shocked!!!

I am the Mother of a now 16 year old girl - who has been bullied since she started school when she was 6 years old !!! I just wanted 2 say thank u and all the people who are making other people take notice of this terrible problem !! As a Mother it just ripped my heart out 2 see my child in so much pain !!! Maybe now there won't be as many kids that have 2 suffer like she did !!! So thank u once again !!!!! As mother who cares deeply 4 her child and the children of others !!!! Mary !!!!!

My son who's 27 wrote a book 2 yrs. ago on bullying its called "The Journal of Peter Rubin", Don't let history repeat itself. Its a sad but possibly true story of how a student was bullyed all through school and had no one to talk to except to write in his journal of the torment he faced everyday at school. You will cry at the end of this story because what he goes through I'm sure many kids are going through the same torture. www.VincentBivona.com I hope all who cares will read it.!!

Ellen,

I am a mother of two boys who having learning disabilties. I cannot tell you the amount of times one or both of my boys have been the target of bullies. I teach both of them to be tolerant of people. I also tell them that they need to stick up for themselves. Bullies are just people with very low self esteem. if there is respect in the home bullies would not exsist. I love your show

Ellen, I'm 100% against bullying. It's gotten out of control. The death rate from bullying has gotten out of control. Kids don't deserve this. Let everyone know about the protest on bullying in Spencerport, it's a very big issue, a child has recently committed suicide on November 29, 2011. It's been on the news for a while and something needs to be done.

Ellen,
My grandson is 12. For the last 3 years, he has been subjected to bullying by TEACHERS and the School Board. I know these are the people who are supposed to protect him; but, honestly, they don't always do that. There are articles and studies and teachers DO admit to bullying students. Their mannerisms, voice, demeanor can all reflect negatively on children. Please voice my concern about this aspect as it has prevented my grandson from attending school for 3 long years. Thank You.

there is something about a young man being bullied on you tube that i wanted ellen to see and maybe contact him for strength and encouragement, but i don't know how to upload. can you please let me know how to do this so ellen will see it?
thank you..
