What a shame that we are having to go through this at all. We as a state passed Prob B for God sakes, and a few people can just take that vote away. I ask why do we even bother to vote if it doesn't count. Missouri needs to be so ashamed that we are letting the animals down once again. We are known as the puppy mill state and that is not something to be proud of. Come on Gov.Nixon please have a back bone and do what is right by the animals. Please, please, please.....do what is right!

Dear Ellen,

Thank you for having Wayne Pacelli on your show.
I live in Missouri and voted for Prop B. It was a close vote only because puppy mills are in the counties and hidden out of sight of the public. We who voted yes knew exactly what we were voting on. It said nothing about farm animals and was exclucively for dogs. This bill was only for PUPPY MILLS not dedicated Breeders. There is a big difference in the two.

Some politicians are becoming BULLIES to get what they want instead of what the voters want. To me they are not doing what they were put in office to do, which is represent the people.

Thank you for your support on this issue. I have pets and this is very close to my heart.

Brenda DiTrapani

Thank you Ellen for discussing Prop B. Missouri voters are not idiots - they can read and the voters who supported Prop B as well as the ones who voted against it, read the legislation as I did and voted accordingly. Prop B passed and the voters will eventually and appropriately determine the appropriate course of legislation. It is not a law for all farm animals and anyone who has read the bill knows this. Missouri breeders do not want to recognize that their own industry needs to be appropriately managed; meanwhile thousands of unwanted pets are euthanized in the state monthly (funded by taxpayers) while they continue to churn out puppies.

The citizens of Missouri were misled with Proposition B and what it would do. Limiting the amound of animals or any amount of property is unconstitutional. This would be like limiting any business with how many products they could sell. Why punish the legal, registered breeders who treat their animals humanely with scientific and veterinarian advisement? By implementing Prop B as it stood, would have financially ruined legitimate breeders across the state and effect the state's economy as a whole! Prop B didn't affect unregistered, illegal backyard breeders, who are the ACTUAL problem! Missour legislators did what was constitutional, because the proposition shouldn't have even made it on the ballot!

As for HSUS, they are NOT your local animal shelter! Half of one percent of their multi-million dollar budget ACTUALLY goes to humane societies across America. That's only aprox. $450,000 spread across thousands of shelters! They are a lobbyist group whose ultimate goal is to eradicate animal agriculture and pet ownership. If you don't believe me, just look at their track record. If you want to help animals, PLEASE DONATE TO YOUR LOCAL SHELTER!

Debbie Brancato,
If I ever catch you on my property I have a thing called a .22 and I have no qualms about using it. I have you know I aminspected by both USDA and State. I never once have bribed an inspector. They have always let me know if I need to step up on anything, and I have always complied. So don't paint a whole situation with one brush. I am sorry you were yelled out, but honestly you might have been one animal away from an episode of animal hoarders.

I am very saddened about this whole situation. I can't believe you would have a man on your show that has duped millions of people as well as your self into giving money to his Shame organization. Of the money they have received from caring people less then 2 percent goes to help the animals they claim to help. The rest go to lobbies, overhead cost and their pension plans. Proposition B as written will most likely put about 1400 families out of work. Will you help those who will probably lose their homes as a result of this posibly passing? Ellen I have been raising dogs, and I love to be around them. The cost to do this is not cheap, and there is almost no profit in it. I just don't understand how it is okay for people who don't even understand what we do. To sit and accuse us of things we have never done. Now America is brain washed into thinking that this must be how all kennels are ran, that raising dogs is evil. I never expected that this is what I was going to do when I grew up, but if putting a smile on a child's face when he sees his new puppy is wrong then I'll be damned.

Hello Ellen,
Please keep in mind that the above comments are puppy mill breeders. I was very involved in puppy mill rescues for many years. I had to quit when a licence inspector came to my home where I was at home with my small children alone and he proceeded to raise his voice and scare the you know what out of my children and my self for 3 hours. (thank god my husband came home) He wanted me to be licenced to rescue animals ( after seeing 3 dogs I had boarded at a facility that I had picked up on the side of the road).....even the ones I had picked up on the side of the road. In the area I live their is no animal control or shelter so the animal picked up that had been dumped and searching hopelessly for their lovely owner to return would have most likely been hit by a car or even worse than this....shot by the farmer up the road that is trigger happy. The inspectors in Missouri have done many inspections that have passed with flying colors. I have photos of these facilities and let me tell you they are horrific. I can show you the photos of cages on top of other cages with the animal below covered in the above animals excrement. I was able to get the photos through seeking in these facilities and taking the photos while the breeder was not there....I know this is wrong but I needed this to show the public what goes on .....the inspectors are so corrupt....I only wish I had a platform to tell these stories like your show. This would be a dream come true for me and the many people that have had to put up with the horrific conditions and the inspectors that use their government title to come in to the rescuers home and try to scare them with ways they can be fined for taking in the animals on the side of the road....he told me he would fine me 1,000 dollars per animal if I did not fill out the paper work and become a "licence rescuer". I never did become a licensed rescuer ......and I still help any animal that needs help.....come and get me Missouri department of Agriculture!

Please Ellen keep sending the message about all of the posters above .....they need to be stopped!
And for all of the gentle souls that do what I do to help the animals in need.....Don't let the Dept of Agriculture use their scare tactic to put money in their back pocket.

Missouri citizens as a whole voted for Prop B. It has not even been put into effect yet, and the Missouri legislature has already overturned it.

Whether a person is located in urban or rural communities really doesn't matter - one person one vote.

Or at least that is how it used to be. Gosh it is nice to live in Missouri - apparently my vote means nothing.

I am a Missouri resident as well as an owner of a horribly abused puppy mill survivor. We, the voters, passed Proposition B last November. Not only am I dumbfounded, shocked and angry that the Missouri Senate voted to overturn Prop B, followed by the House too, but elected officials should respect the will of the people. We voted YES to Prop B.

Why would Proposition B harm licenced breeders IF they are already being compliant? Prop B ensures that the licensed commercial breeding facilities provide basic, humane care for the dogs. It gives clearer standards and allows for real consequences for those who violate the law. Operating an unlicensed facility is already crime. These dogs still will be in horrendous conditions.

People shouldn't be able to breed dogs for profit period. There are too many dogs out there now that are homeless.

As for Vick...it takes a certain type of person to perform such cruel acts and nothing can change that. Put him in a ring and let someone else beat him to death...that's justice.

ellen, you usually do your homework better! I'm a huge fan and an EXTREME animal loveR!! This bill should only cover puppy mills and shoue aimed at shutting the existing ones down and halting future ones from cropping up! They should pass SB113!!! This version of the lwa seems much more appropriate, specific, and proactive than the other law. puppy mills must end but there's a reason the MO vets assoc. didn't agree with it. Find out why for us and report it! I love your show but that was a really unbalanced piece and I'd have a more in depth look at it. I don't want the SPCA to come off looking bad in ANY light because they need all the support they ca get.

@Shanda, a majority of state House and Senate districts voted FOR Prop B, so some lawmakers actually voted against their constituents by approving SB 113.

Prop B specifically says that its standards apply only to large-scale dog breeders that are selling puppies for the pet trade.

Existing regulations allow dogs to be kept 24/7 in cramped wire cages, to go without individual veterinary care, to be left outside in extreme heat or cold, and to be bred without rest. Prop B requires basic needs like larger cages, yearly vet exams, drinkable water, and shelter from the elements.

Oh the lies and the uninformed! Makes me sick. The registered breeders are already regulated by the USDA, which means they are inspected, required to provide vet care, fresh water, clean cages, enough room for their size, vaccinations, wormings, etc. They pay a license fees for this. The puppy mills on the other hand are not licensed or regulated. It's like the black market of puppies. The licensed breeders would like it if the USDA would find these puppy mills and force them to meet the same requirements they must. It's called unfair competition. That being said...we don't need MORE regulation - we need the regulation that is already in place to be inforced. We are paying for it. Where is the money going to come from to inforce new laws? Tax Payers! Prop B allows breeders to only have 50 dogs. What's going to happen to all the extras? Who's going to euthenize them and pay for it? I say let the free market do it's work. If you can't provide quality product, educated consumers won't buy. So lets educate consumers on how to buy a quality puppy and puppy mills will disapper. Lets educate consumers on pet ownership and we cut down on crowding in shelters. This is only an attempt to take away our right to choose where and from whom we purchase our pets. The shelters would like to be the only supplier of pets for you. I think we are smart enough to figure out who is raising puppies in the right fashion if we do our homework. Don't take away our freedom of choice!

YES there are cages stacked on top of each other, YES these animals are treated inhumanely! I work for a no kill shelter and we get a lot of these puppy mill animals that are no longer "needed" or "wanted" for their money making purposes! They have been bread to death practically, they have lice, they are matted so badly they can hardly walk for the pain, they don't know how to walk many of them when taken out side so they crawl on their bellies.
It's sad and heartbreaking to think that a human being allowed this to happen. If only they could be locked away in those cages for just one day!!
This bill is not to shut them down it's to make them treat their animals a little more humanely!
It's NOT after the legal breeders that abide by the law, it's to limit the breeders that have hundreds of dogs that are in pain and misery everyday! its for the ones that are cold hearted idiots that only care about how many puppies they can produce to ship to Petland and other pet stores all over the country!
I've helped rescue groups take these animals from the breeders when they have been reported to the authorities and the animals are being taken away from the. Trust me tears are flowing as you have help these animals out of these stacked cages....and on occasion cut their matted hair loose from the cage wire....This is the puppy millers Prop B is after, NOT the breeders that take care of their animals. Whichever legislature voted to overturn Prop B Has lost my vote for the time they are in office no matter whether they are a Democrat or Republican.
Something has to be done about the conditions these animals are kept in....let your voice be heard!

I am a citizen of Missouri and voted against Prop B...not because I think animals should be treated badly, but because I researched the issue. It's not about puppy mills. That was just the sucker advertising tactic. Ellen, I urge you to check into BOTH sides of this issue before passing judgement on the citizens of all but 9 counties in Missouri who only want CURRENT laws enforced, rather than passing new laws that will shut down legitimate breeding facilities and affect Missouri agriculture.

Ellen, it sure would be nice if your and your staff thoroughly researched HSUS and Wayne Pacelle before you gave him a platform to spout his lies about SB213. Prop B specifically included "ALL DOMESTICATED ANIMALS that live in or near dwellings..." a typical ploy of HSUS to sneak all farm animals in their so called Puppy Mill bill. It was for this reason, among several others , Missouri lawmakers felt it was necessary to revise this ill written and harmful law.

PS sure wish you would have asked Wayne why, in his entire adult life, has he never owned a pet?? Doesn't this strike you odd for someone who claims to love animals?

Thank you for doing your show today on Prop B in Missouri. I'll bet none of the breeders who have blasted you have offered for you to come to visit they're breeding sites. Our Missouri Department of Ag needs to clean up their act! They inspect these greasy dirty places, warn them of violations, then do nothing else. The Dept of Ag went and shut down an animal shelter where all of the animals had had vet care, yet these breeders get away with all sorts of violations. Prop B is for all breeders licensed or not. Please watch the DVD "I Breathe."

I think our welcome to Missouri billboards should read "Welcome To Misery."

I would like to correct a statement in my last comment. It passed in only 9 counties not 14. sorry about that

Anyone who cares about dogs and the right to own a dog, please call Gov. Nixon and ask him to sign and pass SB113. Prop B was a misguided blanket initiative that's only goal was to shut down ALL kennels in this state. It has no provisions in place and no plan to track down puppy mills and shut them down. The only ones who will be affected are the legal breeders already following the law. It is broadly written, confusing and does not take the individual dog into consideration. SB113 defines and clarifies the Prop and actually makes it stronger and enforceable. It does not repeal it, as Wayne Pacelle and the HSUS would have you believe. I wish Ellen would have taken the time to actually read the legislation and shown both sides of the story. Prop B was opposed by the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association, MO Cattleman's association, The State Farm Bureau, The Missouri Pet Breeder's Association, The Corn Grower's Assoc., The Dairy Farmers Assoc....and on and on. Along with the fact that it only passed in 9 counties and failed in 105 counties, those facts alone speak volumes. The duty of the legislation is to ensure that the minority has a voice and is not over-run by the majority. That's why we have Checks and Balances. The legislation has recognized a bad law and has done something about it. They are attempting to make it survivable for the breeders doing a good job, that's all! In the original Prop B, written by the HSUS and their cronies, they exempted themselves and all rescue organizations from the Prop. They didn't feel that those dogs deserved the same standard of Humane care that kennel dogs did. SB113 corrects this and exempts no one. Is this the problem, Wayne? That none of the shelters and rescues in MO could possibly comply with Prop B? Just 3 weeks ago MO had a shelter shut down for inhumane conditions. What's good for the goose is good for the gander! Pony up Wayne, if Prop B is so great, why doesn't it apply to everyone? If this isn't about your agenda to stop all pet breeding, and just about humane care of dogs, all shelters should willingly comply, spread the love! Please call Gov. Nixon and ask him to sign and pass SB113.

Dear Ellen, while I find you and your show very funny and comical to watch I find your views on the HSUS and their President,Wayne Pacelle, a little CRAZY! I am a licensed dog breeder the state of Missouri. Proposition B was a poorly written piece of legislation that passed in the highly rural area's of Missouri. It also passed in two counties in the boot heel. It passed in only 14 counties in the state. This legilation did nothing to stop the puppy mills in the state, but shuts down the licensed breeders, like myself, in the state and allows the puppy mills to keep going. Now according to Mr. Pacelles accusations that there are 3000 puppy mills in the state of Missouri, that is utterly bull crap. There are approx. 1400 licensed breeders in the state of Missouri which is less than half of what he is claiming. If he and his organization know of these other 1600 so called puppy mills that are not licensed why in the world have you done nothing about them? As far as what the state legislation has done is not "over turned" Prop B, but made it fair so that licensed dog breeders in the state can operate. It ads more money for enforcement by raising the cap on licensing fees from $500.00 to $2500.00 and every breeder renewing their license has to give an additional $25.00 for Operation Bark Alert which is a system designed to allow the general public to turn in people who they think are unlicensed or are treating their animals inhumanely. Mr. Pacelle made some accustions today on your show that would have to be false because no licensed breeder would be allowed to have dogs in stacking cages where there were feces and urine falling throught on the dogs below them or have breeds such as Yorkshire Terriers, West Highland White Terriers, or Shih Tzu's to be left out side in subzero temperatures. It is plenty evident to me that Mr. Pacelle knows very little about the dog breeding industry here in Missouri and needs to get a little more educated on the topic.
