Find Out Where You Can Adopt a Cat

halo

Ellen decided to end Cat Week by doing something important. Her pet food company, Halo, is donating $5,000 to the Burbank Animal Shelter, which has 150 cats that need to be adopted. You can find out more about Halo Pet Products here.

Ellen is also encouraging everyone to adopt a cat. Below are some great organizations nationwide. A few that Ellen supports here in Los Angeles are:

The Amanda Foundation

Hi Ellen -
Love your show........
It's all great and wonderful to adopt animals in need. The biggest problem I see is that there are no organizations to help one to continue taking care of our pets. Maintenance, vaccines, fleas, nails, etc.
I have written my story to what seems millions of reputable organizations, to no avail for help with shots, doctor visits, etc. Even a one time voucher for help.
To make a LONG STORY short, I love my three-Boo, BooBee, and Precious. Two were adopted, one was orphaned. I live in low-income housing, and new management has changed the rules on us again. They demand that all pets/companions be seen by a vet each year, or no pets. They also know that we can't afford the luxury of vet care.
In any case, my cats are loved, fed, and have a home.
Any advice? I gave up trying and management has not said anything yet.

Hi from Ontario, Canada. Thanks for all you do for the animals Ellen! Wish there were more people like you. I have 3 cats, 2 I adopted from a shelter, and 1 that I found roaming (feral) outside about 3 months old. They are wonderful and I do NOT let them outside.
I feed the strays in the neighbourhood, they were about 15 of them and now down to 8 (for now). I helped in catching them with traps, and they were taking to an animal shelter where they were fixed, had shots etc. Then they were released back to my street. We make sure they are fed twice a day and have fresh water at all times.
I am always looking for cat food on sale, it may not be as good as some brands like Halo, but they seem happy with whatever I give them. Oh by the way, they all have names, for one reason or another that we (my hubby, and son and I) picked, there is CUJO, PRETTY MAMA, OLD MAMA, PIGPEN, TINY, BLACKY, FLUFFY BLACKY, and SPOT! My 3 inside guys are KITTY, BUDDY and LUKA. Its more personal when you have a name dont ya think!

I saved my sweet baby Sassy Girl recently and "she" has turned out to be quite a handful but what kitten isn't? It so cute and so crazy! I am certain i will laugh at this in a few years. I say "she" because Oh low and behold "she" is a He! Oh well I love the name sassy!
I tried to get some of your awesome Halo canned cat food for my girl and her older brother by trying it out with the free coupon you offered. But I could not print it and then the site said I already had. I know i sent a few emails but heard nothing. My babies will just have to wait. Maybe Santa will bring some. I would still love those free coupons to see if they love it as much as Sassy likes to watch you on TV. She is adorable when you come on.
She sits right at the base of the tv looking up.
Thank you for all you do Ellen.

Blessings!
Yvonne

Ellen, I watch your show alot and just love it. It''s true you do have a good time. Real quick I am sorry you suffer from back problems. I totally understand, I have scoliosis and degenerative disc disease, consequently I have 8 screws and a allignment rod in my back, and take pain pills daily! Anyway, Thank You for bringing really important issues up on your show. I have always gotten my animals from rescues or shelters. I have 12 ferel cats that I have been trying to catch and spay and neuter as I can catch them and tame them. I have made my front porch up for them, they have towers, acratch posts, blankets, and they always have fresh food and cold water. When a new liter of kittens show up I immediately catch them and start taming them, if their mother is not one I can catch, then I take the kittens and bottle feed them and love on them till I can get them to CATS (Committed Alliance to Strays here in Medford, Oregon. But this year CATS is so overwhelmed by returns (because of job losses and foreclosures) and so I have THREE liters(10 kittens) that they could not take. So I am trying to place them myself through Craig's list, but it is so hard monetarilly wise. I am on Disability and my husband is on unemployment getting a whole $84.00 a week. But we keep it up, we daily give them fresh food and water. I can't bring them in the house because of our rescued Samoyed and Pit Bull, THEY don't care for the cats. But I cry daily because it is so hard, I love them all (20) and they all deserve homes with love and laps to climb on. I do that for them, but they deserve one on one.Thank You for bringing cat and dog issues to your viewers. Sincerely Debbie

Six years ago I found four feral kittens living in my back yard.I was concerned about their health so I had a vet come to my house. He could not get close enough to the cats to treat them so I consulted with another vet.A vet who knew a great deal about feral cats.I had to first drug them, cage them then take them to the vet to get shots, flea baths and to make certain that I would not have to train anymore kittens: ) It took 3 months of being confined to a decent sized living quarter then slow release to a bedroom before these very skittish kittens would let me near them.It took one year for them to come to me and my children and now six years later we have six(two more showed up in my new yard) cats that are loving and lazy as they should be.I was never a lover of cats as I have severe allergies but with the help of benadryl I can tolerate their fur.It is the most rewarding thing aside from my children that I have ever done.It took a lot of time, effort and love to get them to trust.I would not change it for anything.I wish that I could rescue more. For those of you that think you cannot. You can if you do it for them. They need you.

Ellen - I think it is so wonderful the way you feel about animals. I love animals, especially cats, I would do anything for a cat. I love that your emotions are so honest. Wish that I could help animals as much as you do. I have 10 cats and feed 7 strays (and lost my job this year, but I won't stop feeding them). Love what you do. You make animal lovers proud

There is something I could really use some help with!About four months ago a litter of five kittens showed up on my door step. They where wild cats and it took us several weeks to earn their trust enough to be able to catch them,We had to catch them to get them into a program called No More Homeless Pets. This program gives homeless animals a physical, rabies shots and spayed or neutered and then release them back into the neighborhood they came from.Well it's more like they releases them into my yard and I have been caring for them ever since.Well I just love them but they eat allot and my husband and I are unemployed so it is really hard to keep them in food!Ellen some Halo Cat Food would be a amazing gift to me and those kitties! Thanks for your time and God Bless!

Dear Ellen, Thank you for supporting all of our dog and cat families. My name is Lorraine Zdeb. I am a pet care professional. My website is www.loveyourpetuniverisity.com . If you google my name, you can see a little history that I have in the pet industry. I have about 1500 clients that my Pet Sitting company services in Central NJ. I have been in business for 21 yrs. and am Past President of The National Association Of Professional Pet Sitters. The key to cut down on animal abuse is Education. I have found a way for most people to afford to pay their vet bills. It is a two step process. Part A is a good aforable pet insurance plan, and part B is a small whole life insurance policy to take out to be able to pay the animals vet bills down the road. No one else. that I know of, is teaching this, and I plan on taking this message, national. It took me two years, to work on getting my P and C licience in the state of New Jersey just to be able to sell pet insurance and then I had to also get my Lic. for Life insurance. I am a pet care professional, on a mission to help cut down on people dropping their animals off at animal shelters because they can not afford their vet bill, or even worse having them put to sleep because they can afford it. The message needs to get out there, and by rights, every animal rescue group or adoption agency, or breeder, should be giving this program out to all pet owners, for dogs and cats to help keep them healthy, and safe at home as a member of our own families. Did you know that over 18% of the pet owning public in the UK has their animals insuranced, and only 2% of pet owners in the US have pet insurance. With vet bills sky rocketing, this is the future and people need to be educated on how to be able to pay their vets bills. Thank you for all you do. Lorraine Zdeb

Hey, Ellen! Thanks so much for putting your name behind Halo products. I was sorely disappointed when I read the ingredients in Rachael Ray's Nutrish, but Halo is one I'd recommend to my friends!

I work at a no kill shelter. We have mostly cats because of the size of the shelter. Unfortunately some live in cages most of the time, but many are free roaming and those that aren't get out for most of the day. We were started by a group of women who wanted a place to take strays to get adopted where they could stay as long as it took to find their forever home. We have so many cats now, and adoptions are down. If you live in St. Petersburg Florida, and want a wonderful kitten or cat, stop by Friends of Strays and take a look at our beautiful "kids".
Thanks, Ellen for all you do.

Congratulations! To all those who have decided to adopt. I recently began volunteering with two different organizations. One is a no kill organization who is limited to the number of animals it can take in because at the current moment they don't have a building and relies on foster homes. The other is a humane shelter who has a small building and unfortunately has to end up euthanizing some animals. Even though I am not around when it is done and it is only done as a very, very, very last resort just thinking about it usually ends up with me crying at least two or three times a day if not more. I find it especially hard to hold back the tears when I simply look at them and they look back at me just wanting some room to run, a place to call their own, and most important love in return. It breaks my heart. I DO NOT believe in euthanasia and I wasn't going to volunteer because of that fact, but nothing would change if I didn't at least try to help the animals avoid that fate. My ideal world would be euthansia free. It is a shame that these poor animals have to pay with their life. So again, thank you, not only did you help save the life of those you brought home, but you created a chance for others to be brought in so they to could have a glimmer of hope in finding a home to call their own.

Hey Ellen! We are not looking for a cat to adopt but a dog. We have to be kind of picky because my oldest son is allergic to most types of dogs. We would need a hypoallergenic dog for him and it is hard to rescue a dog that is just that. I look everyday at the aspca website just hoping to find the perfect dog. I would like a larger breed dog and one that we know will be safe for our son. My 2 year old is in love with dogs and tells me everyday he wants a dog. Is there anyway you could help us find the perfect dog to rescue?

My cat "Taz" died last week after being with me for 14 wonderful years. I adopted him from a shelter when he only weeks old. He passed just as you were having "cat week". In his memory I went to another shelter and adopted not one, but two adorable tuxedo kittens whose mother had been killed shortly after they were born. They were brother and sister and I couldn't bear to separate them, they are the most loving, sweet kittens and stole my heart the minute I saw them! My new "Bella" and "Beau" have brought back the joy in my heart and will live on in Taz's memory.

"Remember to show your love...spay and neuter!!

Ellen, watch your show and I love it and you!I am looking for a kitten for my sister. Her cat was hit by a car and I want to find the perfect cat for her.Can you help me? I WORK AT A SHELTER IN MILO MAINE. THE CATS HAVE AN ENTIRE HOUSE TO THEMSELVES. NO KILL NO CAGE. I AM VERY PROUD TO VOLUNTEER HERE. WE LOVE EACH AND EVERY CAT NO MATTER WHAT AND THEY GIVE US UNCONDITIONAL LOVE IN RETURN. WE CURRENTLY HAVE 60 CATS AND KITTENS. LOTS OF MAINE COW cATS ELLEN.( WHITE AND BLACK).

A feral colony of cats was here when I bought this property in 2004, and none were neutered. Thus a sad scene every spring. I have about 30 of the offspring, all neutered and current on shots. The problem is that I am dealing with recurrent ovarian cancer and have limited funds, time and energy. I feed daily, though it's not enough. I try to treat injuries and illnesses, and give hugs and attention when I can. It would help so much if I had a little help with the food. I hate to think what will happen to them when I die, as my neighbors won't neuter or maintain at all. I am a widow, and have no family nearby. I live in South Texas.

I just adopted my cat, Edmund, from a rescue shelter last week!!! I am absolutely in love with him! :)

Hi Ellen,,,,and (company),
I just turned on your show for this day or Friday(Sept.24) ;and you were saying to adopt a cat! About nearly 8 weeks ago , I adopted a Grown cat or Kitty;from Adoption Center. Her name is Olivia Joy...or (Ollie) ;she is very sweet-natured . (Tiger/tabby mix). She is 4 yrs of age! I hadn't had a cat in many years over 25;so, it was like starting over again! I had to read up on Cats ;like Cats 101. She has been happy in her new home now all these past weeks. I always tell folks , I think she will let me live here! (hehhehe)
She is a large sized gal the Vet doctor said, when she had her first visit! (12.3 lbs). She is not a kitten ;but still playful!
Just wanted to share today,,,thanks! Joanie (from Pa.) ps. love your show!
