Ohio Farm Animals Need Your Help

ohioans for humane farms

Right now, an organization called Ohioans for Humane Farms is working to get an initiative on the November ballot to prevent cruel factory farming practices in Ohio. Similar to Prop 2, which passed here in California, it will outlaw extreme confinement of farm animals and other inhumane practices. Farm animals deserve to be treated with compassion.

Just this past week, we found out how much it is needed. An organization called Mercy for Animals released an undercover video of horrible abuse against farm animals at a prominent farm in Ohio. Waynce Pacelle of the Humane Society of the United States wrote a response to this video that you can read here. You can also see the video there, however be aware that it is disturbing.

Please help get this important issue on the ballot. You can find out more on the Ohioans for Humane Farms website here.

This OH video made me SICK and this guy DID NOT get what he deserved, I wish men in prision could see this video and everything he did to these animals should have been done to him VERY SLOWLY! He is a sick, and I will NOT call him a man; he is a sick sick jerk!

We are losing more family farms everyday to factory farms. Factory farms are owned by big corporation. Do I really need to say more. This is where animals are reated badly not the small farmers. Family farms are selling out because they no longer can make a decent living. My family included. So very very sad. When governments say they r giving money to the farmers it basically all goes to these huge factories. It makes absolutely no sense. But no one sticks up for the farmer not even the farmer.

This is great! Please also help the Abaco Spanish Mustangs of the Bahamas and here in the US. Please help save these amazing endangered horses. Only 5 Abaco Mustangs are left in the world!

HSUS rocks again for the animals!

Hi All,
I just wanted to give you an update. This initiative will not be on the ballot because the Ohio governor agreed to the terms! This is an amazing step towards not only awareness about the food animal industry but also towards much more humane practices for these animals.
Also, on a side note....ELLEN.....YOU ATE AN ALTOID ON THE SHOW TODAY WITH COLIN FERRELL AND THEY ARE NOT VEGAN!! THEY HAVE GELATIN IN THEM. JUST THOUGHT YOU'D LIKE TO KNOW!
Peace,
Cindy

Hsus did not try to negotiate , they came in and said this is the way we want it and if you don't we will put it on the ballot. The State of Ohio does not need a emotion based group telling them what to do. The reality of this is that this will destroy animal farmers in Ohio, but the hsus plays dumb when asked about it,do we need a group like the hsus trying to tells us what to do, i think not!

The Ohio Livestock Care Board was formed to protect the interests of the factory farms, not to protect the farm animals. Alot of people I talked to in Ohio thought they were voting to help the farm animals, when in reality they voted to allow the factory farms to continue their cruel treatment of farm animals. HSUS staff tried to negotiate some concessions concerning the cruel confinement issues. The members of the Ohio Livestock Board refused, because all they care about is PROFIT. Hence, the ballot initiative! GO HSUS!

Last fall, Ohioans voted to establish the Ohio Livestock Care Board. HSUS lobbied AGAINST establishment of this board that would monitor and regulate farm animal treatment in Ohio. HSUS wanted more say in the opeation of Ohio farms than Ohioans. HSUS immediately started their new ballot initiative to introduce more restrictive laws before the Livestock Care Board even began their work.

This board includes veteranarians, members of local humane societies, farmers, consumers, and eeducators. Why not give them a chance to do their job and then, if they are not effective look into more restrictive measures?

Most Ohio farms are family farms. They care about their animals and treat them humanely.
Ohioans decided how they would like to regulate livestock, please give them a chance to make it work!

i wish people like Ellen would talk to farmers and families in Ohio , so she would know what she is talking about, instead of using all emotion and what the hsus is telling her. The worst part is when the hsus hunts all over the USA to find an isolated case of an animal being abused and makes it look like it is the norm, which it is not, farmers do take care of their animals! i hope Ellen knows that if this gets on the ballot and passes , it will shut down the production of poultry, veal and pork in Ohio! Many thousands of jobs will be lost by people with familes to support, and the people of Ohio will buy the same products , produced the same way from another state, all because the hsus wants to run the show. I wonder how people like her can tell farmers what to do, based on emotion and the word of the the hsus, i shudder at the thought of this.

I hate to say it but I'm a meat eater. I can't go a day without eating a good protein meat. I tried to go Vegan but seeing how I hunt and Fish I can't stop eating meat. It's not farm animals that have cruelty it's the slaughterhouses that they go to. If y'all could help out with telling everyone about the in-humanity that goes on in the Canada and Mexico to stop horse slaughter that would be great. Slaughterhouses just need to have a FDA Person watching over what the slaughters do. That's what America needs in it's Slaughterhouses and in Mexico's and Canada's as well.

@Debbie. I'm so glad that you decided to go meat free. It matters....it really does.

I have bad news for you though. ALL mass produced dairy also produces veal. All of them. The kindest and most humane dairy farm (and I've spoken to some really kind daity farmers who do their best to keep the mothers with their children) simply *has* to sell of the boys for veal. They can't afford to feed an animal that will never produce milk for them. I've met a farmer who not only lets the girls stay with the mother cows, but lets the cows nurse all of her children (male or female) because he believes it is what's best for them. But after a few weeks, the boys have to go to slaughter.

Just a heads up for you, because I can tell that you're trying to do what's right, and because you were specific about taking the children and making veal was unconscionable (I think it is also, which is why I went vegan after I realized I would never find a dairy producer that didn't cross my line of ethics).

Thank you, Ellen!! I am a vegan like you and share your love and compassion for animals:) thank you for being the change you wish to see in the world and for using your position to better the world!

Hi I am from Gernamy and i think animal abuse is one of the most terrible things there are in the world. The humans who do this are monster. I hate all the people who do this. They dont't have a heart. I hate them all. I'm a sort of vegan. Be vegan, save the world.

Thank you so much for endorsing this ballot measure! Your are an inspiration.

Thank you, Ellen!!!!!

@Debbie: it is so great to know that there are people like you in the world!! and like Ellen of course! :)

Some other people are in denial about the truth about factory farms and need to get educated... "Humanewatch" is a lie; they are the lobbyists! (they also use false "studies" and "articles" from Rick Berman's other websites, such as "Center for Consumer Freedom") Go get some information for yourself; HSUS is not the only NGO who has evidence and a case against factory farms. You must understand that HSUS is a thorn in the side of factory farms and they are willing to pay whatever they can to defame them. That is what they are doing at present, and you are doing a disservice to yourself to simply believe everything you read.

I am so inspired by the people who really care about animals. THANK YOU, ELLEN!!
IMPORTANT: HUMANEWATCH.ORG IS funded by Rick Berman's LOBBYING company; THEY ARE THE TRUE LOBBYISTS. Please research this before you ignorantly believe everything that it has to say. He also runs sites to defame MADD, American Cancer Society, Union for Concerned Scientists, etc. It is quite hypocritical to assert that this website is "true" while HSUS's is not. They are being paid by factory farm agribusiness to defame HSUS, just as tobacco paid them to say that the health threats of smoking were nothing to worry about.
And to all of you who say that farmers don't abuse their animals, cutting off an animal's beak (especially without anesthesia), castrating male pigs and cutting their teeth (both also without anesthesia) is abuse. Find a factory farm that will allow unannounced visitors. There are some great family farmers, but factory farms do NOT folow their examples. These care standards in the amendment SUPPORT HUMANE FACTORY FARMERS. PLEASE OPEN YOUR EYES; DO NOT BELIEVE "HUMANEWATCH;" Rick Berman has around 15 defamation companies and holds 16 total positions, one in each of them. You must understand that he is a lobbyist being paid to defame NGOS.

And, honestly, if factory farmers are allowed to lobby, why shouldn't HSUS and any other NGO be allowed to lobby? Most NGOs do; it's a checks-and-balances system, the corporation asks for something crazy of the government (involves taxpayer funds) and an NGO balances it by saying that, no, that is what the corporation wants and not what the people want. Would you have an issue with an environmental group helping to clean up the gulf lobbying against oil companies, who spend more money than most people can even comprehend on lobbying?

And HSUS does not want everyone to become vegan; they just want proper animal care standards. Veganism is a choice as to what to consume--agribusiness wants everyone to be meat eaters, so, once again, certain posters are hypocrites; you can eat what you want but you must be aware of the processes by which that food is produced.

Thank you Ellen, you can do more in 5 minutes than a thousand people can in 5 hours.

I think that over time people become conditioned. Recently I have seen several things and learned quite a bit. I did not realize the treatment of the cows, the living conditions, the fact that calves are removed from their mother etc. I am not Vegan, simply a consumer. After learning what I have I have not consumed any meat.I also just purchased my milk from a local health store where I was guaranteed the care of the animals and told I was welcome to drop in on them any time.To you who say its ok,that is your choice, but as a consumer I have made mine. Factory farms need to go, I would rather have many small family farms and pay a little more. As for Veal,it will never touch my lips and the fact that a calf is removed from its mother is inexcusable

THANK YOU SO MUCH HELLEN, FOR HELPING ANIMALS! GOD BLESS YOU!!!ANIMALS CANNOT SPEAK WE MUST SPEAK FOR THEM!!! THAT'S WHAT YOU ARE DOING!!!
