'Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows' by Melanie Joy

why we love dogs, eat pigs, and wear cows
Author Melanie Joy takes a look at the debate over our diets -- from a psychological and social perspective. She argues that the simple act of naming someone a vegetarian or vegan without a specific name for meat-eaters automatically makes eating meat "normal."

This sidesteps the ultimate truth -- we make the choice to eat meat. With an out-of-sight, out-of-mind mentality, we continue to believe stereotypes about certain animals and ignore their suffering to placate our decision to eat meat. This book will change the way you think about your food.

I was able to travel to St Louis, MO the first week in January to tropoghaph a wedding with Melanie Acker Photography. She has been featured a lot on my blog because we have had a very long friendship. Our friendship has sustained time and distance probably we love the same things including being professional tropoghaphers. You can see her gorgeous family here in a post titled my favorite session of the year, and you can see her work of my cute little family here.

There may be some actions within the meat industry that are not correct, however, that is changing rapidly. Those animals are taken care of very well. They are dealt with more humanely then most beloved pets that are put down by the vet.
There are some animals that are meant to be eaten and some not. They have a purpose. North Americans are the only ones this book will ever affect. Everywhere else, they need their animals for transportation, for food and sometimes being that companion. Cycle of life.

I believe there is a name for meat-eaters...Carnivores. :)

This is a great book, and Melanie absolutely deserves to be showcased in a forum where as many people as possible will be exposed to the paradigm-changing facts about the way we relate to animals that she so eloquently and clearly expresses. I would love to see her on the show!

If you think this book is good (personally, I think it is GREAT), you need to hear Dr. Joy speak...She is truly amazing, authentic and engaging! She will answer, compassionately and honestly, all the parts or challenges one might have while reading her book.

Ellen please please bring Dr. Joy on your show!!!

Thanks for all your support on animal rights and vegan living!

Melissa

My wife and I loved this book and gave out several copies to friends and families. She would be a wonderful guest for the show...I might even sneak a day off work to watch it instead of catching it later on DV!

Thank you so much for posting this comment about Dr. Joy. As a former student of Joy's and a vegetarian she opened my eyes to so many realitites about the cruelty to animals. I can remember email exchanges between her and I discussing these awful realities and talking about ways to combat them. A truely wonderful woman all around

haven't read the book and I'm not willing to I just wanted to answer the title because i have my own view of this.

I think it is simply because ..every creature is created for a reason ,and has a role to be around us,therefore,we have fun with some,we use some and we eat some.

Or else why would God creat them for us anyway !!!! it is not crime what so ever ,it is their role they are here to make our lfe better whether by being joyfull or by providing us with food ,wool..etc!

Thank you so much for posting this groundbeaking book "Why We Love Dogs..." by Dr. Melanie Joy on your site Ellen. PLEASE consider having Dr. Joy on your show; she's as dynamic a speaker and guest as she is an author, as well as stunning, charismatic, and would make an awesome guest! AND the book has broad appeal as it's not just about the food industry, but about how we think, how we make choices, basically about being human! I so hope and look forward to seeing you interview Melanie Joy, I know it will be super informative and influential, as well as entertaining to your entire audience. Thank you again!

We sincerely hope you feature Melanie on your show. She has a fresh and compelling message for all of us, from carnists to vegans. You will find that her thesis is the wave of the future, whether we have recognized it or not.

As a therapist I encounter people all the time who behave in a way that is dictated by how they have been introduced to a concept and continue to act that way without ever stopping to think about their actions. Sometimes this mode of operating has very few consequences but other times there is a lot at stake. Melanie Joy has brought meat eating to the consciousness of America and the world. We now cannot continue to eat meat and not think the action through and the implications this action has on our selves, the animals and our planet. I have not stopped eating meat completely but have cut down on my consumption. Not only an ethical issue but better for my health. Would love to see the author on your show and learn more about her philosophy.

Hi Ellen,

I am Melanie's editor (for both of her books). I work *exclusively* on book projects that I believe in, and of all the books I have edited, Melanie's brought the greatest joy to me. I believed in, and continue to believe in, Melanie's work, with all my heart.

Melanie has done something few have: she has shown that the emperor has no clothes. She took what is background, mere filler, and brought it to the forefront, pointing it out as you would a rare bird that just flew out from a tree.

That carnism exists should be obvious; the brilliance of Melanie's work is that she lays out in exquisite detail why it is not. She maps the individual's psyche, and the psyche of a culture, in order to make clear how it is that we can continue to deny the horror that exists, even as clues to its existence are revealed through cracks in the carnist ideology.

But what I love about Melanie isn't just her ideas, her work, her intellectual brilliance. She is also a warm and compassionate person (so often, that is not the case!), so personable, articulate, and kind.

I am writing to express how excited I am to see Melanie's book appear on your blog. And to thank you for all you do for animals: you have demonstrated your compassion for animals and passion for animal-related issues again and again. I am also writing in hopes that you will have Melanie on your program as a guest. I would love to root for her in the audience!

Sincerely,
