Watch Jonathan Safran Foer on Ellen's Life Page

Jonathan Safran Foer, author of "Eating Animals," talked with Ellen about his experience writing the book. He shares some insight on his personal diet decisions, reveals some surprising misconceptions about where our food comes from, and answers questions about the quality of our diets. You can watch the video of his interview (and other guest interviews), and find all sorts of resources to help you make informed decisions about your diet -- on the Ellen's Life page.

Why did my post not get approved. I also emailed the person from VT and am not surprised that they never responded.

Good for you Ellen!
Thank you for supporting the truth...the way the majority of americans are living, eating, and raising animals is incredibly unhealthy and destructive. It is scary, no tactics involved.

Plenty of accurate and scientific information is available concerning factory farming, vegan nutrition, and global warming emmissions..we do not have to rely soley on one person with a 7 minute segment on Ellen! I encourage those interested to explore their options in moving toward a more healthful lifestyle, but remember to keep an open mind...the meat/dairy/egg industry controls a huge amount of the food market, nutritional research published today, and advertising.

Thank you again to Ellen for exposing us to other lifestyles, it is part of being a human being :) much the way eating animals shouldn't be
best of luck to everyone and another big thank you to Ellen!!

Nick- you should think before you type. Actually, just don't think.

I enjoy watching Ellen, but I too, was extremely ashamed to watch the show with Jonathan. And honestly, I will not watch the Ellen show anymore. Ellen, you can choose to be a vegan if that is what works for you. But you shouldn't feed information to the public that is misleading and dang right false. When you have someone on your show that does not have facts to back up something as serious as the food we put in our mouths, it reflects badly on YOU. You never show two sides to one story. It is always YOUR side. At least let people decide for themselves, given that you provide all the FACTS.

My father runs a dairy with 7,000 cows. It is extremely well kept, and run around the comfort of the cows. We have a full time nutritionist who studies feed and the well being of all the cows. That is more than most Americans have. When you get sick, do YOU go to the doctor? Well so do these cows. Our number one goal is the health and safety of all 7,000 cows. We have more regulations to follow than you could ever guess. The cows have 24 hour shade and misters to keep them cool in the summer. They get a hoof trim regularly and plenty of green pasture to roam.

I could go on all day.

Jonathan used to eat meat, until his wife became pregnant?........and now he is an expert? My father has been in the dairy business for over 30 years and takes his job very seriously (as do all of the dairymen I know). I am very sad to see you push agriculture aside without thinking ONCE about it....especially when agriculture is what built this country.

You can preach about "animal abuse" or what is "good" for you to eat. Just make sure you know what you are taking about and that you have the FACTS to back it up.

Oh, and Ellen.......you are welcome at the dairy whenever you'd like. We would love to show you around.

In response to Mr. Foer's segement, I have to say I was blown away by how many of his "carefully researched" statements were false. According to data from the Environmental Protection Agency, only 6.4% of greenhouse gases can be attributed to the entire U.S. agriculture sector. As a beef producer, who cares very deeply for animals of all walks, I can tell you that we are constantly working to lower that number, while providing a very safe, wholesome and nutritious product for all to enjoy!

A review of Foer's book in the Washington Post (by a vegetarian reviewer) stated that we should not buy Foer's book. In his youtube video promoting his book, Foer describes his special relationship with his dog - they French kiss. Has he no compassion for animals? But seriously, is this the person from whom we should be taking advice on diet and nutrition? He made several mistakes in his comments and in his book, some very basic and some technical. His description in the book about how H1N1 developed is not only incorrect, but laughable. The sad thing is, he is taking advantage of a meat-consuming public that is showing some genuine concern for where their food comes from and how it is raised by spreading misinformation for his own profit. Ellen bought her entire studio audience a copy of the book - she has been short-changed.

I enjoy watching Ellen, but today I was somewhat offended by Jonathan Safran Foer thoughtless response to the person who asked him about eating meat because she was protein-deficient, and her doctor had advised her to eat meat. Mr. Foer told her not to listen to her doctor and not to eat meat. This man is not a doctor and does not have any business telling someone not to listen to their doctor. This woman may have medical issues that needed to be addressed. Instead of telling her not to listen to her doctor he could have given her suggestions on different types of protein that are not meat and to speak with her doctor regarding this issue. This guy is not qualified to give medical advice.

Hey Amy and Heather,

GET OVER IT.

How do you know his facts are wrong? Where's your research from?

I'm so glad for this episode, loved it.

Ellen, I can't believe the show I am watching right now!!! I can't believe that you Ellen would actually allow this. As a dairy farmer and a fan of the Ellen show I feel extremely betrayed. This guy has only a portion of his facts straight.

We milk 1,000 cows in Vermont. My cows are treated with the utmost care. We actually have mattresses for our cows to sleep on and they choose when they want to eat and when they want to sleep. They are free to roam about the barn as they wish. We usher them to the milking parlor three times a day where we clean their udders and milk them with a rubber cup that simulates the suckling action of a calf, much like a breast pump.

The thing about cows is the more comfortable and happier they are the more milk they will produce. As farmers it is in our best interest to treat them as good as possible.

Cows are natural fermenters and we feed them fermented grasses and corn that aid in easy, healthy digestion. Our cows never get fed antibiotics. That is an absolute myth and is illegal.

Even though dairy farmers across the country are not even breaking even due to low milk prices, I am still proud to produce a wholesome product that feeds this country from the cows I respect and love.

By the way I do know how to operate a pitchfork and we have to muck stalls.

Consumer research has determined most farmers are introverts so when it comes to defending our industry we are horrible at it. I am also an introvert but I feel so emotional about what I do and why I do it I can't stay in my comfort zone on this. I am so tired of all of these ignorant people trying to convince the public not to drink milk.

If anyone has any questions about dairy farming and how the majority of dairy farmers care for their animals, please contact me at klq4@yahoo.com.

Ellen,

I am a Graphic Designer/Mom from Canada. I usually enjoy watching your show but today I was very put off by Jonathan Safran Foer. He appears to be an extremist who is using false numbers as a scare tactic. I am open to all views on healthy eating and making the world a better place but I do not agree with how he portrays his view. He has a very extreme attitude and his "facts" are way off base. I was shocked to see someone like that getting airtime with you. I am left feeling angry and disappointed after your show today.

Sincerely,
Heather Warrington
