Video of the Day: Glamour Magazine's Normal-Sized Models

Glamour Magazine will feature a pictorial of "plus-sized" models in their upcoming issue. Ellen invited four of the models to talk about their experience (and why anything above size 6 is considered "plus"), and then reveals the photo for the first time! Watch now.

I also find it upsetting that some people think that these models are unhealthy. As others have said, these people are not plus size (look at Burda, plus sizes start at 44 European). I am a size 12 for most of my life (or maybe a 10 or an 8 sometimes) and I am very healthy but I am not skinny.

I hear comments all the time from people who look at someone skinny and assume that they are healthy. I have never heard someone say that you can't be too poor or too fat but many people say that you can't be too rich or too thin. I have never heard someone say "Oh you look great, did you gain weight?" The "skinny" people who are commenting and may indeed hear occasional negative comments perhaps that is a backlash. Consider that other people may get constant negative comments, looks and behaviours and they are unfairly taking it out on you.

I would like to thank you for your posting. I have had the same comments made to me and have actually had people say very rude things. I would never comment on someone's weight. Yet, it is amazing to me that people find it okay to comment on being thin but people would find it very offensive to comment on being overweight. I have had people actually make angry comments towards me because I am thin. People assume because you are a size 0 you have to unhealthy. This is not true. I am extremely healthy and I do not have an eating disorder. Every woman has a different body type. We should all try to be happy with the body God gave us.

I'm a normal healthy size 1 or 3. Always have been, can't gain weight no matter what I've tried. But I am "normal" and "real". I'm 46.

CHECK THIS OUT. LET'S PLAY A SUBSTITUTION GAME: Skinny people hear:

"You're so skinny, are you anorexic?"
"You look gross being so skinny."
"Why don't you eat so you can look normal?"
"You must never eat to starve yourself."

OK, NOW THE FUN PART. All I've done is substitute "fat" words.

"You're so fat, are you a pig?"
"You look gross being so fat."
"Why don't you diet so you can look normal?"
"You must always eat to gorge yourself."

I've had complete strangers say the "skinny" comments to me. Customers at a mall store where I worked as a teen, and even professionals said them when I worked in the corporate world!

Imagine if Ellen had even implied any of those fat statements!! It'd be national news! Yet she had no qualms saying, QUOTE, "I would assume anyone that is a zero or something, that's an eating disorder". How about you non-thin / heavier women reading this? Can YOU imagine yourself saying the "fat" comments to a heavier woman? EVER? To a stranger no less? I'll bet not. How would you feel if someone said the "fat" statements to you? Not so good, huh? Why is it OK to say them to a healthy thin person? MANY thin people, probably MOST thin people are just that way and are healthy. I'm sure some heavy people are healthy too. So on both sides, thin and heavy -some are very unhealthy and should work at becoming healthy, and some are perfectly normal.

Another difference between heavier and thin women: Heavier women are considered "normal" and "real". Thin women are assumed to be sickly.

Difference: Heavier women have many stores devoted to just them, AND most stores at all price points have "Womens" depts devoted to just them; thin people have kid's departments or pricey online-only stores- (can't try things on). Good luck finding a business suit for the corporate world in a kid's dept!

I have noticed a lot of comments on the statements that the industry is calling 6 "Plus-size". I think they're only referencing the models they use for ads, and NOT what stores call plus-size. We ALL know that regular stores like Macy's, Walmart, all prices of stores, have sizes 4 or 6 through 14 or 16 on their REGULAR racks. The "Plus size" dept then usually starts at 14 or 16. So it's not the stores who are calling 6 "Plus-size". It's just referencing the models they use. The AD industry hiring the models calls the 6 models plus size.

Good to see all sizes shown, but c'mon. I think the magazines have realized they'll make more money by boosting the confidence of the "not skinny" people. What are a magazines' goal? To sell magazines and make $$$.

To the woman who doubts that a 34C is a size 0, I'm a 32C and size 0; and, yes, it is hard to find these sizes! I also wear a size 5-1/2 shoe. That usually has to be ordered on the internet. My mom is a size 4 shoe and is a very small lady.

I was unhappy to hear Ellen say that anyone that is size 0 has an eating disorder. I'm 5'1", a little under a hundred pounds. I used to wear a size 3 or 4 years ago, when I was the same weight I am now. Clothing manufacturers have made bigger clothes with smaller size numbers, which I've heard called "vanity sizing." I now struggle to find small clothes as I wear a 0 or 2, which are not always sold or cost much more. Come on Ellen, let's let "real women" mean all women, not just plus size.

Best interview ever Ellen!
lol,

To those who think Ellen misspoke: considering her wife is one of those actresses who has chosen to suffer for her free wardrobe, she was likely speaking from personal experience and not on behalf of society so just take it with a grain of salt and compassion.

It's more important that YOU know the truth about your body than get upset that some TV host doesn't know it too. How could she?????

Hy, my name is Meiri, i'm from the South of Brasil and i've just found you on twitter e and let me tell you, I'RE THE BEST HOUST EVER ! sorry for my english, but i just need it to say that!

kisses

I received my issue of Glamour and read that article and saw the pictures. But before I saw the pictures I thought.. plus size? I looked and half those women look like me. I am not plus size and I can't believe we are considered that. Sad..just sad. I guess having a booty is a bad thing. :(

Ellen,
This is part of our wonderful society...Hey for years they would not even dare show Cher's belly button now they are showing what they call PLUS-SIZE models. If I look like them I would be a happy woman. I must be a geometrically size model then LOL, Ellen you could do a makeover session for geometrically size woman. I would be more than happy to volunteer. :)

And who knows I just might find Mr. Right out there.
Love your show ..keeps me dancing at work.

Seriously skinny people, try living the life of a plus sized person. Deal with health issues and being overweight when it isn't related to food. Eat healthy and exercise and STILL be fat. Clothing doesn't fit. If it fits, it's horribly ugly. Cry more, you will still always be preferred and tolerated over the fat chick.

PLUS SIZED?!?!?!!? THAT is plus sized?? WTF is this world coming to?!

I am really upset about the comments ellen made about naturally skinny people. I am one of those naturally skinny individuals. I have never had an eating disorder and eat 3 meals day. It is people that Ellen, who make these ignorant comments, that make me have to constantly be on the defense about my size. I have to ward of comments ALL the time about my weight. Why is it okay to make comments about skinny people so openly? We all know that if she made the same comments about obese individuals that Ellen would have had made national news and been all over the media about how inconsiderate she is. People need to worry about themselves plain and simple. I have to say, that she has lost a big fan after making these comments...not cool Ellen

Why can't magazines feature all sorts of people and *not* make a big deal out of it? They should have been doing this all along! And they want praise for finally doing the right thing after hurting so many people? They should be asking for our forgiveness, not our praise.

I was very pleased to see this. it makes me believe i can truly fulfill my dream to be a model. i dont have the best body in the world, but its not bad either.

Growing up i was always the fat girl, being 5 foot and 175 lbs. Now, I am 5'5" and 125 lbs, still with a lil belly fat. I will admit after my daughter was born, i didnt eat as much, and I am now smaller than I was before I got pregnant with her.
But, this episode made me feel comfortable with my body.. and no matter how big i get, i will always be happy with myself, at least I'm healthy!!

I'm not sure anyone will read this now that it's been a few days since this show aired, but I can't stop thinking about Ellen's comments and feel compelled to write.

I am 38 and have been naturally thin and petite all my life (5'1" and 105 lbs for as long as I can remember). I have never had an eating disorder and am disgusted at such an ignorant and insensitive comment ("How can a size 0 woman NOT have an eating disorder?").

What bothers me most about this episode is that it portrayed thin/petite women to be ABNORMAL (eating disorder, too skinny, making normal women look bad).

When I was in my late teens and 20s, there was no size 0 or XS, and I found it impossible to find clothes that were stylish and professional. I had to shop in the girls department. I most certainly did NOT feel normal back then, wishing I was taller, curvier, etc. I remember when several designers started carrying size 0 and yes, size 00 Petite, and I was elated. These sizes fit me and the clothes were actually flattering and age appropriate.

Designers should carry clothes to fit ALL SIZES - all sizes ARE beautiful, including petites!!!

While I was watching this segment,I was touched.

To me, it was more about societal norms and acceptance. Letting each woman be exactly who she was born to be.
Not that I'm condoning obesity, but a woman who is more substantive seems more confident. Confidence in who you are leads to taking care of yourself, boosts your self esteem because you can relax about who you are. Not starving yourself to "fit in".
As long as you're healthy, I'm say go for it.
Every woman in the picture looked happy and relaxed.
Like she was embracing a whole new world.
So, hats off to Glamour and I hope they realize the corner they have turned. This could open doors for all girls and women.

yeah, but that still doesn't make overweight healthy

lizzie is the only one who doesnt look overweight, but she is REALLY flabby (i do no excersise flabby) and that isnt healthy
i know crystal renn gained weight eating cheesecake all day and not excersising

why not show women who eat healthy and excersise who are any size that is a healthy weight, or naturally underweight? (you can be naturally underweight, because of a very fast metabolism or overactive thyroid, but no overweight/obese people are naturally that size. The ones with a medical condition ie underactive thyroid, that usually comes from years of eating unhealthily)

Thank you Ellen for talking about body image and the stereotypes that are bombarding our youth. I am the mother of a 13 year old girl who has been battling anorexia for 2 years. She is rail thin and thinks she is fat. It was wonderful for her to see the beautiful woman on your show and for them to talk openly about their eating disorders. Please continue the dialogue!
