Ellen,
I am a straight young woman who totally supports you! I think our struggles should be about making a house payment, car insurance, etc. Not about who we should marry! I think everyone should have the choice to be with and marry who ever they decided, not what your state decide's! I live in a small desert town called Apple valley... well the Monday before election day on my way to school that evening people were protesting on Apple Valley Rd & Bear Valley and half were No on 8 and half were yes on 8... I honked at a red light and gave a thumbs up to the guys walking across the cross walk saying No on 8, and guy in the min-van next to be rolled down his window and asked me if I have read the bible and I told him yes have you... I believe it stays thow shall not judge!! He rolled up his window and that was it. But I wanted to let you know that I hope we can over turn the decision and people can give up the hate and let everyone be themselves and get married regardless of race, oreinetation or anything! If your in love... your in love nothing else should matter!
All my love, Sandra

just keep on the hope & faith alive ellen..it is joyful that barack obama won but sad about banning same-sex marriages in 3 states esp. here in california...just think of it that one they these people who pass this kind of discriminatory propositions would also one day wake up..yes, they can wake up and know that they were wrong about it and soon evolve into loving, compassionate people..

as dr. dyer said, "be kind than be right.." we be kind to them rather than being like them who let their egos rule that they are 100% right all the time as if they are perfect individuals themselves who uphold every word of their beliefs and insist it upon people..

for some reason, i think that mayor newsom has something to do with NO on 8 losing as well, the one on yes on 8 ad showed him with too much pride & arrogance "whether you like it or not..." anything too much is not good nor helpful, he sounded like the other side (right-wing with liberal views)..let's stay humble eventhough we have to fight this good fight for equality...i hope mayor newsom learned a lesson coz he sounded like howard dean...too bad, it affected the rest of the supporters of NO on 8...

just continue to believe for one day yes we can have the same equal rights as others do...and one day the journey becomes more important than the destination..so much lessons to be learned like forgiving and loving those who hate us, which is not easy...forgiving is easier but loving is harder..let us all see beyond each's egos..

may peace, unity in diversity, love & prosperity reign! :)

I live in South Africa, and I'm a huge fan of Ellen's. I am also gay, and I am proud to say that I live in a country where gay marriage is perfectly legal, and no-one makes a stupid fuss about calling it 'not marriage but something else like joyful union'. I mean, get serious! This is people's lives you're messing around with by playing silly word games! Think about it: If a third-world country like South Africa can be progressive enough to have legalized gay marriage, how is it possible that it could still be such a contentious issue in the United States? The truth is that no-one in America REALLY cares about gay marriage. Religious fringe groups just use it to scare voters at election time into voting for the Republican Party, by presenting it as a threat to heterosexual marriage -- which it plainly isn't.

Was sorry to hear about the defeat of Prop 8. I hope that you and Portia fight it all the way to the Supreme Court! There should be equal rights for all people.

I'm sorry prop 8 offends the gay community but "marriage" is between a man and a woman. why can't gay unions be called something else. Like "domestic partnership" or "joyful union"? why are you so insistent on it being called a marriage? the point is to have the same rights recognized isn't it? you can still have a legal ceremony or a religious one if your religion recognizes it. no one wants your civil rights to be taken away but men and women want to keep their term off marriage between them.
gay rights activists have always been a bit extreme ie: look at SF, I think the gay parade they have has done nothing to further your cause, they make it a joke by dressing up in the extreme thereby hurting the seriousness of your beliefs.

We live in Arizona where Prop 102 passed, which will put into our constitution the defination of a marriage...and I wonder just how many of our rights will be trampled on...it is okay to own a gun, so you can kill your spouse, but not okay to love a same sex...since when is equality only for some...Equality does not mean exclusion, we are ALL created equally...why do the ultra right-wing cons...profess seperation of church and state when it benifits them, but bring it up in this agenda...I and my partner are deeply saddened, and hurt that in a state where our Govener is reportedly a lesbian,
(she is the only one not saying so)where several other elected officials are openly gay, that we will be the first state where it is written in our constitution that we will never be equal...guess I should be able to get a deduction on my taxes, considering I am not worth the same.

Ellen,
Love your show!! You are awesome! Sorry to hear about Prop 8. I live in a different state. I would have voted no if I lived in your state. I hope that we see this change around before to long.

I think it is totally devastating that the it was banned. I don't think it's fair for anyone to decide who people can love, or spend the rest of their lives with. It's so unfortunate.

I have never posted on a blog before in my life, but, Ellen, I am so sorry and sad about Prop 8. You make me happy every single day and I wished so much for you that these ignorant people wouldn't have done this. On such a glorious day in our nation, why did this have to happen?

I CAN NOT believe that there are so many people out there that refuse to accept the fact that EVERYONE deserves the same rights, regardless of their own individual religious or personal beliefs. It all comes down to the fact that there are still way too many people out there that still think they have the right to force their opinions on every one else and in the process, take away our rights as human beings. I am so saddened to see that Prop 8 passed. I long for the day that everyone is given the same rights regardless of their sexual orientation. We all deserve to have legal rights no matter what!

Love, Love, Love AC! and Yes, Tonya - AC is Gloria Vanderbilt's son.

omg i love ellen so much...

I was at the biggest election party in Australia all day yesterday (election night in America), and the crowd was amazing, the atmosphere was fabulous. When Obama was finally announced as the President elect, the room changed to screams of joy and happiness, not a single chair was filled as people rose up and cheered. Sadly after both McCain and Obama's speeches, many people dissipated. Those of us who continued to watch the election and celebrate were honestly astounded, and some devastated that the "ban gay marriage" propositions across the US were being passed.

Dare i say, this fabulous, historic election has been tarnished by Prop 8. The tragic irony is that the USA constantly proclaims to its' people and the rest of the world that it is the "land of the free", where "anything can happen", and anyone can "live the american dream", but the reality is somewhat different to that.

I had had hopes that at least California, which holds host to the biggest (or there abouts) gay and lesbian mardi gras on earth, would have the sense to see that whether they believed same-sex marriage was right or wrong on the basis of religion, culture or any other factor; discrimination on any basis is a bigger evil.

As America stands in the forefront of the world stage right now, i would like to hope that President-elect - Barack Hussein Obama - will be the turning point in this world gone mad.

Diversity is every communities ally!

While having Obama win this election was historical and awe inspiring, the moment was bittersweet thanks to prop 8. I wish I could understand why anyone (other than the two people) cares who marries who. I have never understood why the right wingers are so threatened by allowing gay/lesbians to marry. Does this in someway diminish their marriage? If so why?? Why are they so insecure within there own lives that they cannot allow others happiness. Any damage to the institution of marriage has been made by heterosexuals and their 6 month marriages (some even shorter) and their over 50% divorce rate. I guess that's where the insecurity and danger lie, because our divorce rate would be smaller. That's ok, today we loose, but the future is already looking brighter!!! We will win equal rights for all. Never give up and never say never!!!

i was so sorry to see that people think they have the right to decide who we can marry. how would all those voters feel if the government decided they could not marry someone of the opposite sex?

If you had asked me three months ago who I was going to vote for I would not have been able to answer. Over the last 3 months the absolute negative and at times ignorant campaign tactics made me cringe at the thought of voting for a party who built a hate machine and said nothing of substance on the current issues. When Palin was chosen I was glad to see a woman, but saddened that she was so anti-woman. Last night I was elated to see Obama elected. This morning that hope died a little as I read all the state ballot members which passed that restricts the rights of gay people. I guess this is now the land of the free (whom are approved of). As someone who loves this country and thinks all should be equal, Obviously there is still work to do. I'll celebrate today, but let's roll up our sleeves tomorrow

Yes its crazy that there are some people out there that have nothing better to do with their time/talents.. life than to hate. . .discriminate. Yeah... I don't get that. We all just need to love one another.

Thanks for having Anderson Cooper on! He has a great sense of humor and IS all about facts... he respects peoples views and thats Wonderful! I like!!! Facts are whats important!
He's cute too!
Is he related to Gloria Vanderbelt.. like her son? Grams said he was... is he? or has grams gotten into that "medicine" cabinet again!!! LOL
