Tips from Nutritionist Dr. Neal Barnard and How You Can Win His Book!

On Monday, Ellen had a candid discussion about diets with leading clinical researcher and nutritionist Dr. Neal Barnard. According to Dr. Barnard, each year the average American consumes 205 pounds of sugar, 10 pounds of chocolate and 32 pounds of cheese! Here are some of Dr. Barnard’s healthy alternatives to sugar, chocolate, cheese and even meat.

Alternatives to sugar:

Fresh fruit -- As a dessert, or as a snack; keep some sliced cantaloupe in your refrigerator, for example.
Maple syrup -- It’s sugary, but is so flavorful that people consume less.
Stevia

Alternatives to chocolate:

Cocoa powder -- Can be used for chocolate-dipped fruit, for example. Only the thin outer surface is chocolate.
Carob -- doesn’t cause migraines, as chocolate can.
Chocolate sorbet -- lower in fat and calories, compared with chocolate ice cream.

Alternatives to cheese:

Soy cheese -- widely available, but variable in quality.
Nutritional yeast -- makes a cheesy flavor in sauces and casseroles.
Avocado -- has the “mouth-feel” of cheese, without cholesterol or animal fat.

Alternatives to meat:

Veggie dogs, burgers, deli slices, etc.
Beans -- for burritos, tacos, and sauces.
Seitan -- a wheat derivative that tastes like meat.
TVP, tofu, and tempeh -- soy products that can simulate meat.

next: Just Another Manic Monday!

Thanks Ellen for having Neal Barnard on your show. Eating a vegan diet has made me feel so much healthier and more importantly I no longer contribute to animal suffering. The bottom line is if you're buying meat you are supporting a cruel industry that treats animals like unfeeling machines. We all have the power to make informed choices, so give it up, for the sake of the animals...your health and the environment and vote with your dollars! :)

Hi, Ellen .. what was the name of Dr.Bernards book? Love the show.. D.

Memo to Bridgette: When you post a name or site to justify your opionion, such as "PhysiciansScam", always check to see if there actually IS a site to begin with.

It tends to add more credibility to your argument.

Andrea, was excited about your e-mail and would like to know what are the healthy alternatives that caused such a dramatic change in life and the way you feel?

Ellen - thanks for a wonderful show! Dr. Barnard has some sound recommendations for health by avoiding animal products. I've been vegetarian for years... vegan for almost a year and I'm amazed to see my health improved by eliminating dairy & eggs... I wished I would have done it forty+ years ago!

Going vegan... better for health, better for the planet and better for the animals. It's all good:)

Ellen, I am wondering what the name of the book was that you gave away on tv I was looking at Chapters and I can't seem to find it? Can you please let me know what it is. It sounds fabulous!
Thanks,
A.

It's great that people are eating better but one of the worst causes of sickness is rarely mentioned. We are all being poinsoned by toxic chemicals that are allowed onto the market. One of the worst is perfume. This "fragrance" is actually modified gasoline, and has undergone NO safety testing before you put it on and breathe the concentrated vapours. No wonder there is such a rise in cancer since are lives came to be saturated with these petrochemicals. Use only all natural fragrances, and tell others about the risks.

Love your show.
I am 69 and it is never to late to change my eating habits.
I would love a copy of the Dr's book to
help me get started.
He made such good sense.
Love Ya !!!!!

Ellen, Thank you for presenting a meatless diet in such a positive way. I am a lacto vegetarian, but I am going to give the vegan way a try. One week at a time cutting out sugar and then cheese. Have you eaten at the Veggie Grill? Totally vegan food that is GREAT! There is one in Irvine, the other is in El Segundo! Thank you for always looking ahead and not being afraid to think out of the box!!
Always a fan, Diana

Thank you ! Thank you ! Thank you Ellen for having Dr.Neal Barnard on your show! And THANK YOU for letting your viewers know there ARE delicious alternatives to meat, etc.

I personally like the entire meatless food brand BOCA - www.BocaFoods.com - and SILK Soymilk, the refrigerated kind - www.SilkSoymilk.com - and the entire line of cheeses from parmesan to cheese for sandwiches - www.galaxyfoods.com.- It melts and tastes like regular cheese. The cheese brand 'vegan gourmet' is also very tasty.

Ellen, I wanted to THANK YOU again from everything from having Dr. Neal Barnard on your show, to helping rebuild animal shelters, to letting your viewers know of animal food alternatives.

There really should be more people like you! Thank you and please continue having more animal friendly shows!

Thank you for having the Dr. on today! I'm sorry I missed it - perhaps you can post the video on your site? I enjoyed reading everyone's comments - in response to the dairy farmer I would recommend he and everyone else pick up copy of the Mad Cowboy. It was a life changing book for me. I was a big time meat eater but I just couldn't stomach it after reading his book. He is a 3rd generation dairy farmer.
I just wanted to also comment that according to the the United Nations livestock is the number one yes the number one contributor to green house effect - don't take my word look it up. So by reducing your animal intake you really help the planet.

Thanks for having Dr. Barnard on your show. I thought what he said was interesting and looked up more information on him. It truly is an eye opener.

Hi Ellen: Congratulations to you and Portia for stepping up and caring about the treatment of farm animals. There is a book I am reading and it is horrendous how animals are treated and what is happening to our food.

"Modern Foods", The Sabotage of Earth's Food Supply by David Casper, MA and Thomas Stone, ND., CN.

Please read it and please continue the good work of educating the public. We eat food for energy and the energy of a terrified, tortured animal cannot be conducive to good health.

Thank you for all the good that you do.

Hi Ellen -

You are the cutest!! I'm not able to watch your show very often, but everytime I do I want to get up and boogie with you. What a fantastic way to get some positive energy going with your audience. I also want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for having Dr. Barnard on your show; he is an amazing resource. I know from personal experience that removing meat & dairy from my diet has made me a much healthier person both physically & spiritually. In addition to that, my mind is at peace knowing that I am no longer contributing to the mind-boggling suffering that factory farm animals endure every single day. Thank you, thank you, thank you for having the courage to invite Dr. Barnard onto your show. You are THE best EVER!!!!

Buying canned beans is a great meal strecher. We have turkey taco's and I use half the usual amount of turkey and a can of black beans.
You can make chicken torilla soup and add any kind of beans.
They are great they have iron and fiber very healthy!

Ellen,
I just started watching your show this summer and I really love it and look forward to it. Today you had the Dr. talking about giving up meat. OMG I am going to try it. This is a really big deal, I love meat!!! Well wish me luck and I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for putting on such a great entertaining show. PS the George Clooney watch is awesome. I love him and I get such a kick out of your traps.+
