Ellen Says Vote Yes on California Prop 2

The election is almost here, and I want to make everyone aware of a proposition on the ballot here in California.

In this state, when animals are raised for food, a lot of them are crammed into cages so small they can’t even move. I should warn you that the images of these cages are disturbing, but it’s important to me to help get this message out.

Please vote “Yes” on Proposition 2, and help improve conditions for these animals.

Anyone who is interested in animal rights should read the book "Dominion' by Matthew Scully. I wish that people had more compassion towards suffering...Wouldn't we all want to live in a society that is caring towards all of us living creatures and not irresponsible just because there's a dollar in it? Ahem..remember slavery.. or child labor? It worries me that the animal industry is so secretive and that nobody talks about it...yet we all eat, and I would hope that we all dislike torture and pain.

Thank you for attacking me and my belief's. Funny that I spent all those summers working on my Uncle's Ranch and don't seem to know how animals should be treated. Funny I spent all those years in the Marines to have my legitiment concerns looked down at like I am a monster. Funny that I am a member of the one wildlife foundation that has done more than all enviromental groups put together to restore wetlands and wilderness area's(Ducks Unlimited) and yet I have no empathy for these animals. Funny that while this state is in a bugit crisis, my views about not damaging the biggest part of the economy are totally overlooked.

If you noticed I did say that conditions needed to be improved, just not at the cost of lost jobs, lost state revenues, and THE LOST OF FAMILY RANCHES!!! Every body says that this will re introduce small family farms and ranches. It will not.

Land costs will keep any but the wanna be rich-city leaving farmers from coming back to the land. Only the Big corporate firms will be able to buy the needed land. So after having to buy new land, new pasturage, (yes the animals will have to be fed more), new barnage, etc. etc. where are all these little ranchers going to come from???? Where is the barely noticed increase in price??? Please give me a break, come back to the real world and lets improve conditions while having it make sense.

Ellen,

I want to thank you for supporting PROP 2. I know a lot of people do not think it is a good thing, but it is not right to treat any animal the way these poor farm animals are treated. I support PROP 2 100% and I hope other people understand and VOTE YES! Thank you again Ellen for supporting this important measure. Love ya,

Vicky C.

Hey Ellen,
Why is this just a california ammendment? it should be everywhere in the country. Perhaps you and Oprah should team up on this together and get this message out to more of the people in America.
Although I know Kobe beef is quite expensive but perhaps we should take a lesson from japan. I have three german shephards that have thier own dog run, my oldest is 10 years old, he has just gotten a bacterial infection and i'm sure its because i slacked off on picking up after them. So can you imagine the foods we are eating from these farms. Good Luck to the humane society, thanks for doing all they do.

To the one questioner in these comments before me, if you must ask Ellen how she could be a supporter of Prop 2, I ask you open your mind and watch the video of how these animals are treated. If your question still remains, then get a check-up to see what can be done about your missing heart.

Also, your proclamations about sky-rocketing food prices and ensuing hardships are wild exaggerations.

On the other hand, the videos of animals farmed as food depict they way it is for hundreds of millions of sentient creatures at any given moment, without hyperbole.

I missed the show today, but I am a strong supporter of proposition 2. Thank you so much for informing your viewers of the horrible situations animals endure while in factory farms. I spend many hours gathering signatures to get this on the ballot. I hope that with your help, we can stop inhumane treatment on factory farms!

Thanks again!

ps. Is there anywhere I can go to see the episode again?

Dear Ellen,

After reading the comments posted by viewers, I can say that I am proud that Arizona did have such a positive effect with the veal / pork industry tactics.

In these already hard economic times, and as the single mother, with NO support from my handicapped son's, father, I would GLADLY pay extra for my "meats" finding comfort in the fact the animals that are forced into providing my son and I food are living the best life possible until the day of their demise.

No, I'm not a vegan and do love my food, meat and all, but I would rather pay for meat that came from an animal living in humane conditions rather than what our country currently deems "humane." I watched the video, I am a member of PETA and a regular ASPCA donation provider and adopter, I do my best to keep on the up and up in regards to the humane treatment of animals, whether it be a dog, cat, pig, cow or hen...animals are lives, creatures that breathe, as do we, and we owe it to them to provide them the proper treatment no matter what their future holds.

Thank you for having the president of the Humane Society on your show making me more aware of the problems I didn't have a clear picture of. I do now and will vote YES when the time comes.

Thank you,

Megan Marshall

The Knights of the Round Table changed their motto from "Might is Right" to "Might for Right." Thank you, Ellen, for using your power and might and influence for goodness and right and compassion!!! You're my hero!!! We must not collude in the suffering of our fellow earthlings... vote YES on Prop 2! And to the first poster... Save your money. Eggs and meat are bad for you and the environment! A United Nations report acknowledged that meat production adds more to global warming than all transportation combined. LIVE AND LET LIVE.

This kind of treatment toward animals has left a pit in my stomach and aches in my heart since I was a teenager. I'm now 38 and nothing has changed all these years. Is Cali. the only state putting this on the ballet? How do people find out or get something going the state they live in? Very sincerely, Rebecca Johnson. Mass. I just want to add "Ellen you are so AWEsome!"

There's some myths out there worth addressing, for example; Food prices will increase if this initiative passes.

FACT:
Published research, as well as an analysis by a California-based poultry economist, show that it costs producers less than one additional penny per egg not to confine laying hens in battery cages. While it's possible that giving these animals better living conditions may increase consumer prices by a few pennies per dozen, the hidden cost of such inhumane confinement is increased cruelty, and it's the animals who are paying that extra price.

Another Muth: Prop 2 will just drive egg production out of California, merely moving the problem rather than addressing it.

FACT:
During a similar ballot initiative in Arizona in 2006, the industry attempted to scare voters with the same assertion. In reality though, the opposite happened. Not only did the major gestation crate user remain in the state, but the landslide vote (62-38) was a catalyst for national reform in the veal and pork industries. Within just three months of the vote, the top two veal producers announced they'd phase out their use of veal crates and the largest pig producers in the US and Canada announced they'd be phasing out gestation crates.

Arizona vote set a path not only for improved animal welfare in the state, but it encouraged reform in the rest of the nation, as well. A similar experience will likely take place in the egg industry when Californians pass Prop 2 – and industry leaders seem to agree. Further, an increasing number of major retailers are demanding that their suppliers move away from extreme confinement practices. Prop 2 will accelerate this trend, meaning that there will be even less incentive for production to relocate.

I can't understand why you are supporting a prop that will not only cost California Families as much as 5 times the current cost on some food items, but that which will further reduce our state revenues. How are you going to like paying $20.00 for 12 eggs, or $18.00 for bacon. I can't afford this plus everything else that is going on. Or how about only being allowed to eat certain things at certain times because there just isn't enough eggs or bacon to go around.

California's GNP is still over 65% agriculture. It makes or breaks California's economy. We already have to import Veal, chicken products, and pork products into this state. If we strap California ranchers and farmers with the expences that prop 2 imposes on them, we will lower state revenues and jobs, while creating more of a enviromental impact from increased travel to import these items into the state.

I agree that the treatment of these animals has gone to an extreme that borders on cruel behavior and that conditions threatens human health. We do need to address this by improved inpections and further studies, not by killing off an industry.

Now is not the time to take away jobs, further reduce revenues, have peoples food costs skyrocket, remove current farm families and businesses from our state, incresae pollution from importing products from other states that don't have to work under these restrictions, and just make it harder to do something as simple as feed people.

No animal deserves this. I thank you Ellen from the bottom of my heart, and on behalf of the animals for helping expose these unspeakable cruelties. I grew up hunting, eating veal, but in college I became aware of what these poor creatures endure and I have been Vegan ever since, over 15 years, never healthier, never happier! Thank you again and again Ellen..

I like the idea of outlawing these monstrous corporate monopoly farms. What it will create in turn is opportunity for small family farms to come back into existence, where people can own their own business and take pride in their work. Sure the prices of meat and eggs will hit the roof, who cares so long as we can improve the lives of humans and animals.

end entry

Haven't eaten meat for over 20 years because of this....can still barely watch it...my youngest son now just decided to become a vegetarian!! You reach so many, many people. From all of the billions of animals who have suffered and will continue to, thank you so much.

end entry

It's hard to believe sometimes what's being done to these animals. Just because they're for food or not the type of animal they'd keep as a pet doesn't mean they should be abused.
Hopefully these terrible conditions can be made illegal, but if not, there should be a more widespread and publicized marking for products made humanely. At that point consumers who care about the treatment of animals can use those products, the impact of which would be less profits for other competitors forcing them to use better methods.
Any of this is only the start though. Anyone capable of leaving the animals in these conditions may abuse them in other ways not included in Proposition 2. Bringing these disgraceful acts out into the light and stopping those resposible will always be an ongoing battle.
Thanks you, Ellen, for helping!

Hi Ellen, I don't know where to start, it makes me sick, everyone needs to see this video and we need to do something about it, tell me what we can do to help. At the same time it sounds hipacritical cause I eat meat, I guess not anymore. Sincerely Americans we need to end this.

Connie.
