For These Dogs It's No Day at the Beach

On Tuesday, Ellen welcomed Steve McGarva, who with the help of his wife and the organization "Island Dog, Inc.," have rescued over 500 dogs that were abandoned on Puerto Rico's "Dead Dog Beach." "Island Dog, Inc." is doing incredible work on the island.

If you want to know more about this great organization, or would like to contribute to "Island Dog Inc.," go to: www.islanddog.org.

I also brought a dog home from a vacation we where on in Puerto Rico this last December. His name is Rico and he followed my husband and I every where. The people said at the hotel that people just dump them any where they can, we fell in love with him and he is know here in California thanks to the hotel managers wife helping us to get him home. He is the smartest dog and as funny as they come. What we forgot to think of was that we have a male French Bulldog and three cats and the cats would not come out from under the bed for days and he was being a little snappy to my male, so he know lives with my parents that are close to eighty and he is SOOOOOOO spoiled, they treat him like a baby and he loves every moment of it.

I want to contribute. Can you tell me where to send the money?

Dear Ellen and the producers of the show,
I am so greatful that you addressed the subject of animal abuse and homelessness on your show. I have seen it first hand when visiting Puerto Rico and found it so disturbing that I cannot go back. I beg you to keep discussing this subject on your show to help raise people's awareness of this horribly sad problem. Also, could a link to the Island Dog website be displayed more prominantly on your website and left up for some length of time to help raise money for Island Dog?
Also, how can we help on a large scale? Could there be a media event similiar to "Idol Gives Back" on American Idol, where celebrities like yourself, Oprah, and others who love animals get together to raise money?

I did go to the Island Dog website and I am so saddened to learn there are only four shelters in puerto Rico, which is as big as the state of Connecticut. Also I learned there are an estimated 200,000 homeless dogs and cats living there. Many of them are sick, malnourished and abused. I donated money to the website and urge everyone reading to donate WHATEVER they can, however small the amount.

Sincerely,
Liza Butler

I have a special place in my heart for island dogs. About 5 years ago I adopted a dog through a rescue agency called "puppy angels". My dog, Sophie, is from Anguilla in the British West Indies. Her mother was killed when she was 4 weeks old. She was 6 weeks old, tiny and under nourished. She became my dog when I was sitting amongst 20 adoptable puppies and she climbed on my lap and licked my nose. Sophie is the sweetest dog I could have ever dreamed of! She is now a very happy, overly nourished member of our family. Unfortunately, she was diagnosed in December with canine Addison's Disease but with proper treatment she will be able to live out the rest of her life happy and able to keep up with our 2 young boys. Thank you Ellen for having such a wonderful story and expressing the importance of spay/neutering and pet responsibility!

I just really admire Steve for caring about these poor doggies. I watch Animal Cops all the time, and yet, these dogs were worse! I want to be a vet when I grow up, and now that I saw Steve rescue all these doggies, maybe I could have my own shelter, too. If my mom lets me, I would love to adopt a doggie from Steve's shelter.

As many other people did, I cried when I saw those pictures. I work for a rescue oganization, and I do not understand why some people got so insulted that every volunteer organization was not mentioned. She has 10 mins. to do a segment, and the story was about how one person can really help and make a difference. That is the miracle!
I think posters should stick to the topic here. There are other places on the web site to comment about Ellen's lifestyle. It is her show, her life, and I am happy for her.

This really touched me and I have sent the website
to all my friends asking them to pass it on and donate.

STEVE god bless you for saving those dogs, you didnt have to but your heart did it! i cried listening and seeing those picturs! your in our thoughs and prays!what you did was AMAZING! PLEASE keep up the EXCELENT WORK!

I just want to thank Steve for being an inspiration to me that one day my dream of helping homeless dogs in Acapulco can come true. I do not have the resources yet but I pray one day I can help these dogs because I fell in love with Lobo, a homeless beach dog, when I was on my honeymoon.

God Bless you and your wife for your gracious deeds!

I am so thankful to see something being done to help these animals. I was in Mexico not too long ago. While on the way to the airport to fly home, I saw a injured dog limping on the side of the road. This sight has stuck with me. I have wanted to do something to help these animals, but living in the states, I didn't know where to start. I am donating and hope that others do too.

You are a special person. You will be blessed with good Karma.

Thanks,

Know the song "If I had a million dollars" Well I wish I did so that I could help that much!
What these people are doing is amazing and whatever I can contribute I will. What a blessing it is to see that there are other people in this world who give a damn! Let's keep this going and lets educate our children, the next generation; on animal cruelty and knowing that every living thing deserves a chance to live. That us as humans have no right to decide what lives or dies! Here's to dogs and the joy they give us everyday. I love my dog, and I love the story I heard today on the Ellen show! Every community should have a rescue program. Dogs are the Best!God Bless!

I was so happy to see this story on Ellen. This is a problem everywhere! I will be immediately make a donation to his cause. My dogs are all rescues from Florida with similar stories. A new problem that is arising, is with all of the housing foreclosures, families are moving out and leaving their pets in their yards or their house. My dog Jake was left for dead in a house in Miami After 6 months of rehab he is doing great! I would live under a bridge with my dogs before abandoning them. They are family.

I am very involved in animal rescue and rehab, for those of you who cannot keep your pet, contact rescue groups on the web - each breed has a rescue group. Or put an ad in a local paper and interview the potential family. Go to their home and see where your pet will live, you have to feel confident in who you let have your pet. It could be going to animal research or who knows where.

I LIVE IN VIEQUES,PR AND EVERY DAY WE ARE TRYING TO SAVE AND EDUCATE OUR LOCALS FOR NEUTERING.WE ARE ALWAYS TRYING TO FIND A WAY TO MAKE SURE OUR ANIMALS ARE FED ,WATERED AND MEDICATED.WE HAVE DEDICATED VOLUNTEERS TO FEED,CLEAN AND BATHE.OUR FUNDRISING METHODS ARE HELPING BUT IT IS TIRING TO SAVE OUR ANIMALS.INSTEAD OF A PEDIGREE DOG I HAVE ADOPTED A SATO,MANGO,WHICH HAD BEEN IN THE SHELTER 6 MONTHS UNTIL HE LICKED OUR FACE.ITS PEOPLE LIKE STEVE ARE ALSO IN VIEQUES.THE PROBLEMS ARE NOT DOGS,WE HAVE CATS,HORSES AND BIRDS TO BE TAKEN CARE OF.WE ARE GREATFUL FOR PEOPLE LIKE ELLEN TO GET THE PROBLEM ADDRESSED.THANK YOU SHARRON BARROWS

Thank you for bringing this situation to my attention. I just sent a donation to help Steve in this humane, wonderful cause. I also downloaded and printed out the letter to petition the governor of Puerto Rico to stop the cruelty of animals allowed on their Island.

God Bless you Steve!

Dear DUH!!!!!! The name fits you perfectly. It doesn't matter if Puerto Rico is a third world country or not. Sometimes it takes drastic measures for drastic situations, no better way than to hit the pocket of businesses and their owners! Stop trying to educate the public and put your money where your mouth is!!! Help out with a great cause.
Compassion

I think that this is the greatest thing any human could do for these dogs! They really deserve a nice home. It made me cry to see how that German Shepard was transformed into a new dog. I don't know how I can say Tank you more. THANK YOU!!!!!!!! You and your wife are amazing! Thank you again!!!!

I grew up in Puerto Rico, and one of my most beloved dogs was one that I rescued from the streets. When my family moved to the States our "Borinquen Terrier" came with us of course and lived out a wonderful and healthy life.

Steve is an absolute hero and all lifes best should come to him and his family.

I will definetly look up his websites.
God Bless him and Ellen for brining him on national tv.

Did you know MANY racehorses that lose are taken straight from the track, behind the barn and euthanized? Owners "can't afford to feed and care for losers." Even track veterinarians are upset over being forced to kill otherwise healthy horses.
I am not at all surprised to learn how the unwanted dogs are treated. The world is becoming too callous in its humanity and and compassion.

*TEAR*
To see those poor dogs...how could people leave them, drop them off because they were not wanted anymore...?
I pray that many people see this episode and give what they can to help all of them.
That was a great gift to give the Halo animal food!!
I love your show

Thank you,

Ashley Best

I saw your show with mom today. Kudos to the rescuers in Puerto Rico. I opened a Pet Pantry here in my town in CT. I was ten, now at 18 I have been running it for 8 years. Yes, it was my idea and yes at 10 I really did organize, make phone calls, and run it. I still do! The pantry is located in the local food pantry. People come and pick up food for themselves and if needed they can get pet food. All free of charge. In over 8 years more than 30,000 pet food items have passed through the pantry doors. It is a huge success and easy to run. It has kept our local shelter numbers low and less strays left in the cold. The idea that educateing the children in schools in Puerto Rico is a great idea and I was lucky to have both parents who educated me on the importance of respecting animals and a elementary school teacher to teach humane studies to her class in science. Just thought I'd throw out the pantry idea and give a big thumbs up to the efforts that are being made in Puerto Rico and the success they have had. It isn't easy to see animals in distress and even harder to walk away, but like what was said on the show today if it is a common sight everyday some people become numb and the younger population begins to think it is acceptable to continue this kind of animal abuse. Making children aware that abandoning an animal is a form of abuse will help break the cycle. Ellen, your generous donation is just wonderful!
