For These Dogs It's No Day at the Beach

On Tuesday, Ellen welcomed Steve McGarva, who with the help of his wife and the organization "Island Dog, Inc.," have rescued over 500 dogs that were abandoned on Puerto Rico's "Dead Dog Beach." "Island Dog, Inc." is doing incredible work on the island.

If you want to know more about this great organization, or would like to contribute to "Island Dog Inc.," go to: www.islanddog.org.

Ellen,

I wish more people had a heart like this gentleman. I used to work at an animal hospital as a veterinary assistant and I had to leave because I had a hard time not yelling at people who had pets that did not care for them properly. I have been around animals all my life and I can not imagine what this gentleman saw first hand, the photos made me cry. All of my pets are rescue pets my first two cats both came straight off the street when I was in college, while in college I paid for dozens of cats to get altered and vaccinated and my husband and I found them loving homes. I have taken the web address down and will be donating what I can to help out.

Thank you, Ellen, for letting the country know about the abyssmal conditions for animals in Puerto Rico. I have tried to help Save A Sato for a few years and was thrilled to have Steve mention them. They work tirelessly to rescue abandoned animals in a country that seems to do little to protect it's pets. Maybe the more attention the country receives about these conditions, the sooner the situation will improve. I would encourage you to follow up on this story and for your viewers to donate to these groups and voice their dissatisfaction with these conditions to the government of Puerto Rico. Just think of what a difference Steve made in the lives of these wonderful creatures. Thank you again. Please keep up your dedication to help animals in need.

I was so happy to hear that the show did a program on Dead Dog Beach, My Dalmatian Lilly is from there. The People at The Florida Dalmatian Rescue and the Islands Rescue are such caring and wonderful human bean and are doing such a wonderful job. Lilly was flyin from the Islands on Wednesday and we picked her up on Saturday, taking here to her new home in Daytona Beach, Florida.
She has adapted well, is very spoiled and such a beautiful girl.We could of not asked for a more gentle and loving dog. She and her sister Daisy, love to hang out and both think they are lap dogs. Thank you Eileen for helping in this great cause.

Thanks for having Steve on your show. We really need to think about the way we treat our animals. What he has done is truly wonderful & with your donations he can do more. We shouldn't forget about Puerto Rico, but we also need to think about things here in the States. We need to prosecute those who do cruel things to any animal. In the Phila/South Jersey area it was reported that there is a website showing horrible acts against animals. We need to punish those that abuse. They only grow up to do worse. Lets start an education plan in the States so that from birth till death we don't harm each other & that includes any animals.

Thanks so much for the Steve McGarva segment. Ten weeks ago I found, or more correctly a few-week-old feral pup found my doorstep in Palmas del Mar, Puerto Rico. I'd been fostering her and trying to find her a permanent home. Unfortunately all local shelters where she would have had a realisic chance for adoption were too full to take her. Sasha was way too special to take that kind of chance with. After seeing the People story, a friend suggested Island Dogs.

Thankfully, Island Dogs' Katie Block agreed to take her. As of this week, Sasha's living with and loving her new family in Maryland.

As far as the infighting and counter-productive actions of some local PR animal groups, I encourage them to change the way they think about this issue and beg them to persuade anyone else in their sphere-of-influence to do so as well. If folks concerned about PR animal issues can't galvanize, there's no hope for Palestinians and Israelis, Sunnis and Shiites, Croats and Serbs, or Tutus and Hutus. And the world, including people and animals, will be just that much sadder for it.

P.S. Ellen, if Senator McCain won't walk you down the aisle, I'd be proud to.

This was truly touching. I hope you continue to do what you do. we need more people like you! you have my support

What a great segment! It's people like him who allowed me to have my Lucita. She is an amazing dog. Thank you Save a Sato and Steve!

What an amazing guy! Thankyou Ellen for having Steve on our show, unfortunately the problem of animal cruelty and neglect seems so overwhelming at times, but to hear of people like Steve and his team makes you realize there are really wonderful people in the world who are making a huge difference.

As well as sending another thank you to everyone who has worked to end the horrible plight of the Satos (and dogs/animals everywhere in need) I have something to share. When my boyfriend and I first met our Cinny we only saw a beautiful creature torn between the want and need to love and trust us and some unimaginable fear. Not knowing then about the satos (it was just a word put before her name on the Shelter's list to us), we fell in love. So very quickly she was able to be the trusting, sweet, super-intelligent, agile, incredible dog she was meant to be. As we learned more about where and what she had come from we were simply amazed. How could this devoted, sweet being so quick to "comfort" us in our bad moments, so intuitive of our feelings and so eager to please have come from that? Months later we were back to adopt a second sato - Honey. Honey is missing most of one ear (perhaps those goddam machetes?)- we only know that the original injury was too "clean cut" to be accidental. And Honey choose us - although terrified nearly to the point of being catatonic - she actually licked our noses and seemed in a hurry to "get home". It was not for nearly another 4 months that we found out through a volunteer for Save A Sato that Cinny and Honey had been cage-mates and best friends back in Puerto Rico - but had been sent to the states months apart and the bond between them forgotten. I've heard time and again there is something almost magical about these dogs... If I could take care of another of them, I would...and that they so desperately need homes and an escape from the pure torture of their day to day lives is only one small part of why. I choose "Sato" mostly because of what they are - and as person who has had dogs all her life of many, many types...they are the finest I have ever been given the honor to have in my life. I just wanted to take a moment to speak for them...and animals everywhere with no voice of their own...these wonderful creatures once treated as less than garbage are a treasure that I'm thankful for every day of my life. So...thank you...to all of those who have started a movement or rescued an animal or simply raised their voice enough to be heard for even a brief moment...you all deserve our thanks....

Your an amazing person with a huge heart!
Thank You for doing what you do!

If only everyone could think like you when it comes to animals!

Thanks again! I find it truly amazing!

Thank you Steve--

I adopted my sato about 4 years ago thru Save a Sato... www.saveasato.org

I had no idea what a Sato was before I adopted her--that's not why I fell in love with her--but as she lays sleeping here next to me--I thank god she was able to get out.

Keep up the good work !

GOD BLESS YOU FOR TAKING CARE OF THESE INNOCENT DOGS .I JUST MADE MY DONATION THROUGH PAY PAL AND I AM GOING TO TRY TO SEND SOMETHING MONTHLY...I AM SO GREATEFUL....... SUE

I wish I can save every animal in the world. im a 24 year old with 10 cats and 3 dogs. most of them have been saved. its hard to take care of them but i feed them before i do feed myself. i take care of them, and spend time with them everyday. people call me the crazy cat lady already. *haha* Im only 24. If there is anyway I can help you I'll send my love there way. I cryed when I saw the show. Ill do what I can Good Luck and hope the best for the dogs.

I pray that all who see this will help to the best of their ability. I know I will. It just sickens me to see such suffering and disregard for Gods creatures. No animal should be treated like this! They deserve our love and kindness and care. Lets get our friends and family members involved and show that love will turn this around! It is our duty to help the innocent.

Hi, I was wondering if you can tell me how to find a video of this interview. As pet lovers, I wanted to share this with me husband, so we can decide how we can best help.
