For These Dogs It's No Day at the Beach

On Tuesday, Ellen welcomed Steve McGarva, who with the help of his wife and the organization "Island Dog, Inc.," have rescued over 500 dogs that were abandoned on Puerto Rico's "Dead Dog Beach." "Island Dog, Inc." is doing incredible work on the island.

If you want to know more about this great organization, or would like to contribute to "Island Dog Inc.," go to: www.islanddog.org.

Hey ellen! I love your show!! U r soo funny and cool!! And i waz wonderin if well nevamind.

I need the address to send a donation to island dogs. My family and I visited PR this past summer and were appalled by the number of street dogs and family dogs chained up in yards. We even saw a kitten hung from a fence. Thank you to those in PR who are working so hard to change the attitudes of children so they can become compassionate and caring about all living creatures.

I would love to help this couple with the animals there...but would have to bring along my 7 rescue dogs and bird and need a place to live with them all! Any info. let me know. I would relocate in a second!

Ellen, thank you so much for raising awareness of the horrible problem with animals in Puerto Rico. I, too, rescued a dog from Puerto Rico almost a year ago and it has been one of the best things I've ever done in my life. Rubia has become a huge and loved part of our family. I urge all readers to check into adopting a Sato. The dogs in Puerto Rico are humble and beautiful. I frequent the West side of the Island and now have new hope for this problem. I am also going to contact Island Dog, Inc. To see if there is anything I can do from Western Puerto Rico.

Thanks Again!

I just saw the spot on your show where you discussed the homeless dogs of Puerto Rico. Just about a year ago , I adopted a border collie mix from our local shelter who is from Dead Dog Beach. She is just a joy and we love her with all our heart. Before adopting Daisy I did not know about this huge epidemic in Puerto Rico - thank you for spreading the word. You do make a difference every day and I admire your authenticity and compassion.

Hi Ellen,

Thank God for re-runs & thank you Ellen for airing the segment on Island Dog Inc.

I was very touched by Steve's story & mission to save those dogs. I love the website www.islanddog.org & was thrilled to see that there were other animals also getting help.

I'm glad I'm off work this week so that I can watch your show. I don't have TI-VO so I miss out on a lot of your shows :(

I do know that you make a difference in this world & loved are loved by so many. Congrats on your marriage. The wedding pictures are so beautiful.

Who is that sphoon person? Wow! Bad day!

This person needs to go to another comment page and use some of that anger and try to find something positive to direct it to.

I personally found it very positive in this story about the work and sacrifice they do. If we ALL did a little something in a positive way and made someone smile or just said hello, It would be a great place to live and work and love.

Now if we can help the pets thrown away here in Canada and the States.
I drive truck along most of the major roads in both countries and see some sorry sites.

We don't have to go far to give help to these poor animals who need it.

Please be responsible when you become a pet owner!
You just can't throw pets away along the roads.
The look in these animals eyes is heart breaking,
they wait for their owners to come back often waiting in the middle of the road and not making it til the next hour as the traffic can't avoid them. Just to lay in the ditch dying a slow painful death.
The sad thing is in some of our cities we also throw away people.

Help is sometimes a close as a passing vehicle or
at least take your pet to a non kill shelter for them to live life with someone who wants them.

Dear Ellen,
I love dogs! I always wanted a dog. i started crying when i heard that they abandon dogs on a beach! I hope that every dog is safe and better!

Thank you so very much for airing a show that the world needs to see. It absolutely breaks my heart to know that anyone in the right mind could abuse innocent animals. I wish I could do more to help but as a college student I do not have much to give but I am going to give anything I can with more to come in the future. These dogs deserve a better life because they have so much unconditional love to give. God bless Steve and his amazing cause.

Ellen.... you amaze me everyday with your compassion and geneousity (and humor of course) I saw this re run on Steve and his island dogs and like many in your audience...started crying. I am a volunteer/foster with the local Rotteweiler Rescue here and can't begin to tell you the stories. People continue to astonish me with their cruelty. Thank you for bringing light to this story and to Steve and his cause. We need more people like you, like Steve and the many others out there who continue to make animals lives better!! thank you -

What if we all just donated 1 (one) dollar? One dollar a month to this organization and others like it instead of buying that latte or bottled water?

I am and do! It may not seem much to most but every dollar is greatly appreciated on the receiving end!

Thanks for bringing this to our attention Ellen

i think its great when people save dogs...
i thought i was doing good because, i saved four... and love all of them... i wish you great success.... k.

Thank you Steve McGarva, on being a truly compassionate man. If only there were more like you in our world.

Thank you Ellen, for bringing this story and this compassion to light, as you so very often do.

(If the negative enery of the people Jessica was previously referring to, was reversed somehow and actually used in a more positive and constructive way, maybe there would be more Steve McGarva's in this world, instead of less.)

Wow those are beautiful dogs. I love you Ellen..

Dear Dottie Dearest,
My day has not exactly started cheerfully.
I have had to ban myself from the Walmart store in
Palatka. The checkout girl was friendly as usual,
but when she told me the carton of cigarettes I was
purchasing was about thirty=five dollars, I just
lost it and became completely sarcastic. I told her that I didn't think it was fair for our government to ask young men and women to go to other nations and shoot and kill people and then not smoke cigarettes just because shooting and killing people makes them nervous and a cup of coffee and a cigarette provide better relief than an anti-anxiety
because you need to be sharp when you go back out to
shoot and kill more people; and it really is no
comfort knowing the fine doctors can construct you a plastic arm or leg should yours be blown off by
a suicide bomber. What happens when the prostitue
you just hired has a bomb you know where and tells
you that you are really going to get off this time. Well I guess the doctors won't have to be
worried about a prothesis, because you can order
yourself one out of Hustler magazine. I wonder if
they come in camo? ANYWAY, I saw piece about Steve, his wife and the dogs in the PR. Maybe they could open a meat packing house with a Chinese restaurant next door. They could pack most of the meat as jerky and drop it from aircraft over the Sudan, and use the profits from
the restaurant to buy fuel for the aircraft.
ANYWAY AGAIN, I ended up using the "N" word in
Walmart, and even though I think of it purely in terms of attitude and NOT flesh tone. I don't think I'll return to THAT store again. Wouldn't
ewe know it, that is the very Walmart where I purchased the More magazine which got me interested in ewe in the first place several years ago. It's ALL ewer fault Ellen and now ewe have to come to the airport at St. Augustine to have
a cup of coffee and a bowl of cigarettes. See you
soon. Sphoon

I've been running a feral cat rescue for the past 6 years. I have experienced first hand the physical and emotional toll this can take on a person. It is truly a unique person who can give selflessly to a cause so well deserved. Sad to say there are not many people who would give so much of themselves in the face of such adversity. I am so very proud of Steve McGarva and his family for their dedication and unwaivering support of these poor mistreated creatures.

I have adopted my sato when I went to Puerto Rico on a vacation. This beat up creature was running around the grounds of the hotel I was staying at. He had numerous cigarette burns and cuts but he was full of charisma. I quickly decided to take him home and with the help of my friend Sandy that was arranged. Sandy does a lot of work in Puerto Rico rescuing dogs. Stimpy has been in the States for about five months, he gained 12 pounds, his scars have heeled-and he is one of the most fun-loving and smartest dogs ever. His coming into my life makes my days that much brighter. These dogs are special and very loving, they appreciate the kindess and the second chance they were given.

dear ellen, thanks so much for airing this story. as a fellow animal lover i am now doing all i can to help out. ive made hundreds of copies of the letter to the govenor and bringing them to work to hand out and have people sign. ive also sent 100.00 donation and will send more whenever i can. please do a follow up story so more people become aware of this horrible treatment of animals and hopefully get involved too. thanks ellen for your compassion. janice kempisty
