For These Dogs It's No Day at the Beach

On Tuesday, Ellen welcomed Steve McGarva, who with the help of his wife and the organization "Island Dog, Inc.," have rescued over 500 dogs that were abandoned on Puerto Rico's "Dead Dog Beach." "Island Dog, Inc." is doing incredible work on the island.

If you want to know more about this great organization, or would like to contribute to "Island Dog Inc.," go to: www.islanddog.org.

PS: ANIMALS WEREN'T MADE TO BE AN ACCESSORY, THINKING OF GETTING A CUTE LITTLE PURE BREED JUST BECAUSE IT'D MATCH YOU? REMEMBER THEY ARE TO BE COMPANIONS & MIX BREEDS MAKE SUCH WONDERFUL PETS TOO!!! OH & JUST TO LET YOU KNOW, NOW A DAYS, PETSTORES ARE JUST CHARGING THE SAME PRICE FOR MIXED BREEDS ANYWAYS (& MANY OF THESE ARE BROUGHT FROM PUPPY MILLS WHERE THEY'VE LIVED IN DEPLORABLE CONDITIONS, WHERE MOM AND DAD ARE JUST REPRODUCTIVE MACHINES THAT LIVE THEIR ENTIRE LIVES IN A CAGE WITH NO ANIMAL OR HUMAN CONTACT! & FROM WHERE THEY USUALLY GET ILLNESSES) WHY SUPPORT THIS WHEN YOU CAN FIND THEM AT THE ANIMAL SHELTER FOR A MUCH LESS ADOPTION FEE? & HAVE THE REST TO SPARE ON VET CARE OR FOOD OR EVEN DOGGY STUFF. DO UNDERSTAND THOUGH THAT THOUSANDS OF STRAY PETS ARE BORN EVERY DAY & TO AVOID THE SAME FROM HAPPENING, MOST ANIMAL SHELTERS SPAY & NEUTER THEM TO AVOID ANIMAL POPULATION FROM OVERGROWING. NOT TO MENTION IF YOU ADOPT FROM ANIMAL SHELTERS YOU'RE TAKING HOME A PET THAT HAS ALREADY BEEN SEEN BY A VET, HENCE LETTING YOU KNOW WHAT FUTURE CARES YOUR PET COULD NEED & HANDING THEM OVER TO YOU WITH THE MOST REQUIRED BY LAW & NEEDED VACCINES FOR YOUR PET'S HEALTH. ALSO, THERE ARE LOTS OF NONKILL SHELTERS WHERE YOU CAN TAKE YOUR PET IF FOR ANY UNMMENDABLE REASONS YOU CAN'T KEEP IT (*& PLEASE USE THIS AS A LAST RESOURCE, AFTER TRYING TO SEARCH FOR A HOME FOR THEM YOURSELF, MAKING SURE IT IS A SAFE PLACE & RIGHT PLACE FOR THEM TO BE IN & WHERE THEY WILL GET THE CARE & LOVE THEY NEED). HOPE THESE LITTLE ADVICES HELP & REMEMBER: "YOU MAKE YOUR PET, IF YOU TRAIN & DEDICATE TIME TO THEM, THEY WILL TURN OUT TO BE EVEN BETTER, YOU CAN'T ALWAYS EXPECT ANIMALS TO BEHAVE LIKE HUMANS FOR OBVIOUS REASONS" & "MIXED BREEDS MAKE GREAT PETS TOO!" DON'T NECESSARILY HAVE TO BE A PURE BREED TO BE GORGEOUS & LOVING UNLESS YOU'RE PLANNING ON DOG SHOWS.
THANK YOU SO MUCH AGAIN & AGAIN & HOPE THIS INFO HELPS.

... adding to my last comment, I've rescued some pets myself, all kinds possible & currently own two wonderful dogs that I rescued, one was brought to me by a friend who knew I loved pets & just couldn't allow his parents to throw her in the street to be ran over by a car, & the second I got from the animal shelter he was a "stray" Now they both enjoy a WONDERFUL life with all I can offer to them, including just the basic little things, food, water, shelter & lots of LOVE. Killing, ending with their lives isn't the answer, there are much more options to giving them another better chance to enjoy life as much as they deserve giving that we already took their first, second, or even third chance already. Be part of a group, or even do it yourself! start acting, adopt pets from shelters! write to government! don't assist to animal abuse related events! (including some circuses that use animals) buy products that haven't been tested on animals! (they're safe too!) If you can't keep a pet, find it a home! I'm sure there's lots of people out there that just can't afford spending thousands on pets from petstores but sure have enough to give it the attention & love it needs! be PROACTIVE & I'm just sure from personal experience the gratification you get back from these wonderful creatures is without comparison! they sit beside you & stay beside you in good & bad not expecting anything back, even when they're hurt from past experiences, they're still willing to come back with their head down, just asking to be loved & wishing to be treated with the same respect we demand every day. Please don't ignore the real issues surrounding our daily living, when your heart pounds & tells you the right thing to do, DO IT WHILE YOU CAN! This is like no other experience you could get in life, & spread as much knowledge as you can, there are still more generations to come & maybe with lots of work & hope, these issues could CHANGE. Thanks sooo much for reading, & hope these words really have an impact in your life, do some research, you'll see animal abuse lies everywhere, sometimes just because we can't see things, doesn't mean they don't exist. Place yourself in their paws & think:" Is this really fair to such innocent creature?" "What can I do to help?" "Let me start today!" even if its just sharing the love with your kids & showing them how to care for pets & nature, inform your peers, MAKE A CHANGE TODAY. Thank you so much for reading & hope the long paragraph made some sense & had an impact in your life. Sorry for the long message & Thanks to all the members of these organizations in favor of creatures needing help, & just remember: the sooner the better, Nature might just not last to hold itself for too long at this manner. Thank You, God bless.

So much of man"kind" & so little it offers. It is a gift sent from God to have you go beyond ambition to support nature; The world has forgotten where it first begun, and that nature isnt our enemy... but our best friend in all situations. It is also my dream To help these little creatures, victims of horros and abuse from he claws of human "beasts", the most dangerous of all. Thank you for crossing the line to a better life. God Bless You. Sometimes we forget how much nature has given to us, not to mention all we build, all we do, is born from it alone. Even the couch we're sitting on while reading this message. I'd say GET INVOLVED if we could all just stretch our hands out to those innocent creatures, it would really make a difference to those who lost their place in our addictive world. Ellen, thank you sooo much for what you are doing, if more people as wealthy & famous could give as you do, we'd probably have less animals dying each year because of man"kind". We're encarcelating ourselves each and everyday even more as we keep sucking life out of earth & give nothing back. Maybe, just maybe it won't last as much as we think it will for us. Thank you & please please don't ever stop being as influential as you can be in relation to Animal rights. They NEED IT, they can't speak but they sure show it! We just shouldn't be ignoring it! Again, Thank You. & anyone else reading... a little could just be as enough to start making a big difference. Thank You. God bless you.

What a touching story, it's hard to belive that in this day and age neglect and cruelty like this takes place. These dogs are domesticated and it's our responsibility to look after them. They don't deserve to be abandonded like this. Cudos to Steve, he's surely a hero in my eyes.

I just want to point out that yes there is a trial going on in PR but IS only going on due to the outcry from the public, groups and the fact that it was thrust onto mainstream media when it happened. It also doesn't help that PR estimates 15 million dollars loss of tourism due to the bad press. Otherwise the government has NO invovlment with any education, spay/nueter, control or adoption of PR's animals. There is a shelter in Arecibo that is supposed to be government run, but is being used as a political tool instead. There residents of the shelter who are only getting food and vet care from independant organizations who are stepping up to care for the animals.
I do also want to point out that as an animal lover and an activist for PR, I do take offense to anyone impling that we need to spend more time concentrating on what is happening in the states. Although i do agree there is a major overpopulation issue here as well, I personally have on my calender ALL activities from no-kill shelters at Petco or where ever else they may be. I buy them dog food and volunteer at my local shelter as well.
I do want to leave you with one last thought- The states has learned from Katrina and has taken very progressive steps towards making sure that did not happen in Gustav, but what do you think happens to PR's "garbage" during the next 3 upcoming storms? The only hope they have are a group of about 10+ people who spend there savings, use their bathroom as an ICU and save even the smallest of lives with the minimal resources they have.

I thank God for giving us Mr and Mrs. McGarva; they are extraordinary people with hearts of gold. I wish you and the Island Dog organization the very best. I know there will be a special place for you in heaven.

Thank you Ellen for inviting Mr.McGarva to your show and for letting him tell his story.

Regards,
Mans Best Friend

I just talked to my sister who lives in PR and told me she was watching the news this week and the people who were killing these dogs are facing tremendous legal issues and they are in jail. I just want to let everyone knows that this do not reflect in any sense the way we live or think in Puerto Rico. When this news came up people were terrifying just like you and today there are lots of people and organizations involved including the government. Thank you and I'm glad after all to share my opinion with all of you. Good luck, Gusi

Ellen,

Thank you so much for that story and thank you Island Dog. I have been going to PR on business for the government for 18 years and hated it each time because of what I saw. People don't realize that you won't see it in the tourist areas but if you travel outside that area it's heart wrenching. And to think this is part of the US and not a third world country. My colleagues and I tried writing to the Governor and Tourist Board on several occasions with no results except for, I believe getting a shelter which I heard is just putting the animals down left and right. I just hope they are doing it humanely.

My husband and I are huge dog lovers and were so encouraged by Steve's story. We are currently supporting our co-worker, Bill Fabrocini, and his efforts to change Krabloonik Kennels in Snowmass, Colorado. Krabloonik is a dog-sledding operation and that has been under scrutiny for many years due to the lack of care and poor living conditions that over 260 sled dogs are forced to endure. The suffering of these dogs are absolutely horrifying (much like the dogs on the beach). Our hope is that we get enough supporters that we can make a difference like Steve did on Dead Dog Beach. If you'd like to support us, please sign our petition at www.voiceforthekrabloonikdogs.blogspot.com.

Arlene please I think you are reflecting yourself in those comments. I feel embarassed for yourself. I think Robin's comments are the most intelligent, common sense in this blog. Anyway, I dont use to waste my time doing this but I am from PR, and dog abused is true. I feel so bad and ashamed about this situation with the dogs. I personally rescued a labradoodle where I live in TX. And guess how much I paid?? 500.00$$$$ Now... I know was a high price for the shape he was. This lady here in USA also was mistreating dogs. And please don't take this comment personally. I said USA the same way could be in England or France, OK!. My dog was so sick I ended up paying much more than buying one in Australia!! But, I do not regret a BIT. I knew my choices and I wanted to rescued a dog, so I did! So, I do not know at what capacity this is still going on since this horrible news went all over the place a year ago. This is definetly a spread. But, Puerto Rico is facing so many problems; drug addicts and drugs related terrible issues in the streets...that it is already out of control. What can you expect?? I think also the fact PR is a micro ant compare with USA makes everything sounds bigger than what it is. You need to put everything in perspective, then you will realized this happens in your country as well. If not, just watch Animal Planet. Robin's comments are very realistic and sincere. I think the most important think is to educate, to help in any way you'd like but keep in mind human poverty and desperation specially the children. And we have poverty here in USA as well. Respectfully, Gusi

Ellen,

You are a true class act...True strengh comes from the will to help those living things,Human or animal who can not help themselves. Some of our elected officals should follow suite.

Thanks for your work

I would like to see Ellen have an auction where viewers could bid on a thoroughbred collectible with all proceeds going to save the dogs on the island
I will donate mint condition triple crown programs from two of the greates race horses to ever take to the track and win the coveted triple crown---seattle-slew 1977 and affirmed 1978 they were the last two to win 30 years ago. both of these great thoroughbreds are now dead along with the great secretariat.

charlie

give it some thought

Ellen, thank you so much for doing a show that has Included Island Dog! And I am touched reading all of the comments. I work with a rescue group in central Peurto Rico (Second Chance Animal Rescue)and there are times where I wonder where all the compassion has gone. Thank you as well for the dog food (we were given some of the donation!)Education is the key and you have helped all of us turn it up a notch. And I applaud the comment from Arlene! She is right every little bit helps. if you can donate 1.00 and there are 50 more willing to donate 1.00 you HAVE the abiltiy to make a difference and change a life. Thank you for all that you do Ellen and the animals of Puerto Rico are forever grateful!

I like many am a huge animal lover and I have been to Puerto Rico many time but had not idea this was going on. Steve is an angel and so is Ellen for bringing this to our attention. I will be sending a monthly donation to help Steve with these poor animals. God Bless you Steve and Ellen for being such beautiful people and caring for these precious animals that ignorant people discarded like trash.........

God Bless,

I am so glad you exposed the horrible happenings on the beachs of Puerto Rico. I was sick to my stomach after going to the island dog web site and saw more pictures. rest assure my check is on it's way as well as a letter to the chamber of commerce in PR. Keep up the good work, it is great having you on the side of the forgotten and helpless.

Thanks for having steve Mcgarva in the show . I went to Puerto rico this summer and came back horrified. I sent the letters to the governor, to the tourism board, and emailed my friends......It is horific that people abandon their dogs and leave them to die.......I was devasted when i visited the farol in Arecibo, and they are all abandoned, sick and dying.......God blessn the Steve's of this world for helping...I am encouraging my friends again to send more letters an donations.....Thanks Ellen

God bless these people for their good work. You have a special calling - not everyone would put their life and their own wishes on hold to try to clean up the mistakes of other people and help these innocent animals. I have vacationed in Puerto Rico and will NEVER return because I was deeply affected by the number of strays and tied up dogs-it was disgusting, really, and I do not need to spend my holiday dollars in a place where the treatment of animals makes me sick. You are doing wonderful work.

This man is so inspiring to all of those who love animals. Ellen thank you for bringing him on your show to let his story be told. His website is amazing.

I applaud the relief of the beach dogs and all the pet food donations in PR. Have there been any Halo pet food donations for our stray dogs here in the USA?

God bless you Ellen for all what you do for dogs.
