When It's On

I thought you may enjoy a You Tube video of an amazing 6 toed feral cat we recently adopted named Pee Wee. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9x-19KoEYo
We originally saw this poor little kitty when he showed up in our back yard last winter, a shivering, skinny, teeny weeny kitten, all of a few pounds, foraging for food in the sub zero temperatures of the mid-west. Although we've been feeding him ever since, he's always been quite skittish and took off like a lightening bolt at the sound of a door opening, which made rescuing him back then virtually impossible.
Sadly, when we hadn't seen any trace of him for a couple of weeks back in August, we thought he had been killed by the local pack of coyote's cruising our neighborhood's woods. He miraculously showed up one morning, and over the next several days I was able to get close enough to throw treats to him as a reward for learning to do tricks on command. Such a sweet cat, he purrs like a fax machine, and my husband was totally taken with him too. When I was able to get close enough to pet and brush him, although we've never held him, we knew we had to save him from the wild, and make him an indoor cat. That's when things took a saddening turn.
After the trip to the vet to get him all fixed up, and the resulting mishaps from instances of misguided advice, inexperience, misinformation or lack thereof on the part of the veterinary staff where we took him, the outlook for Pee Wee's future is uncertain. (A shocking escape from the vet's office, frantically searching several wooded acres to find him, severe bites to my hands trying to capture/tackle a scared "wild animal", a trip to the Prompt Care for me and a series of antibiotics to fight a potentially nasty infection, a 10 day rabies quarantine mandate from Animal Welfare Department for a freaked out kitty, and a follow up visit to vet to get a clean bill of health report for rabies, where I then pointed out to the vet that I found a lump behind his left hind knee..yikes..)
Looooong story short, the good news is that the deep bite wounds to my hands have healed, and our neither our sweet cat nor I are foaming at the mouth. BUT for those of you who may be planning to get your pets vaccinated in the future, or for those of you that already have, please know that certain combined vaccines can have devastating side effects, surfacing 3 months to 11 years after being inoculated. If your vet doesn't advise the risk vs. benefit of certain vaccinations, sadly like me, you sign off on what you think is preventative medicine to ensure your pets best well being. I've since learned the cancer side effect happens more often than you think. So, with the cat wearing an embarrassing "lampshade-like Elizabethan collar restraint" to prevent self-suture removal, several hundred dollars in unnecessary surgery bills, we are awaiting the pathology report for the mass that the vet removed from his leg to find out if he indeed has fibrosarcoma, a malignant type of cancer, the resulting effect from the additives used in the feline leukemia vaccine when combined with the rabies vaccine, which I was never made aware was a possible risk. I googled this type of cancer, Vaccine Related Sarcoma, and am now totally wigging out waiting to hear the results, but we're hoping for the best.... but freaking out that this information was never brought to my attention before they just willie-nillie gave him the vaccine package. The outlook and prognosis for this type of cancer isn't good. We'll know more on Thursday, but in the meantime, we're really cherishing every minute with this super kitty! (I know, he's just a cat, but it's amazing how attached you can get in a year's time...crazy, huh?) On a positive note, despite the series of unfortunate events, I think you'll get a kick out of seeing this talented kitty. I've never posted anything on You Tube before, so not really sure how to share Pee Wee's talents with all the animal lovers out there who might like to see him in action. If you get a chance, please check it out and share this link with anyone you think would enjoy seeing a "Hemingway Cat" catch treats in his huge 6 toed paws! Please keep a positive thought while we await the lab's results. Make sure you turn up the volume, see him "speak" on command, get on his chair and play "catch" with those super thumbs! Thanks for letting me share this with you all! Jules :)
