I thought you may enjoy a You Tube video of an amazing 6 toed feral cat we recently adopted named Pee Wee. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9x-19KoEYo
We originally saw this poor little kitty when he showed up in our back yard last winter, a shivering, skinny, teeny weeny kitten, all of a few pounds, foraging for food in the sub zero temperatures of the mid-west. Although we've been feeding him ever since, he's always been quite skittish and took off like a lightening bolt at the sound of a door opening, which made rescuing him back then virtually impossible.
Sadly, when we hadn't seen any trace of him for a couple of weeks back in August, we thought he had been killed by the local pack of coyote's cruising our neighborhood's woods. He miraculously showed up one morning, and over the next several days I was able to get close enough to throw treats to him as a reward for learning to do tricks on command. Such a sweet cat, he purrs like a fax machine, and my husband was totally taken with him too. When I was able to get close enough to pet and brush him, although we've never held him, we knew we had to save him from the wild, and make him an indoor cat. That's when things took a saddening turn.
After the trip to the vet to get him all fixed up, and the resulting mishaps from instances of misguided advice, inexperience, misinformation or lack thereof on the part of the veterinary staff where we took him, the outlook for Pee Wee's future is uncertain. (A shocking escape from the vet's office, frantically searching several wooded acres to find him, severe bites to my hands trying to capture/tackle a scared "wild animal", a trip to the Prompt Care for me and a series of antibiotics to fight a potentially nasty infection, a 10 day rabies quarantine mandate from Animal Welfare Department for a freaked out kitty, and a follow up visit to vet to get a clean bill of health report for rabies, where I then pointed out to the vet that I found a lump behind his left hind knee..yikes..)
Looooong story short, the good news is that the deep bite wounds to my hands have healed, and our neither our sweet cat nor I are foaming at the mouth. BUT for those of you who may be planning to get your pets vaccinated in the future, or for those of you that already have, please know that certain combined vaccines can have devastating side effects, surfacing 3 months to 11 years after being inoculated. If your vet doesn't advise the risk vs. benefit of certain vaccinations, sadly like me, you sign off on what you think is preventative medicine to ensure your pets best well being. I've since learned the cancer side effect happens more often than you think. So, with the cat wearing an embarrassing "lampshade-like Elizabethan collar restraint" to prevent self-suture removal, several hundred dollars in unnecessary surgery bills, we are awaiting the pathology report for the mass that the vet removed from his leg to find out if he indeed has fibrosarcoma, a malignant type of cancer, the resulting effect from the additives used in the feline leukemia vaccine when combined with the rabies vaccine, which I was never made aware was a possible risk. I googled this type of cancer, Vaccine Related Sarcoma, and am now totally wigging out waiting to hear the results, but we're hoping for the best.... but freaking out that this information was never brought to my attention before they just willie-nillie gave him the vaccine package. The outlook and prognosis for this type of cancer isn't good. We'll know more on Thursday, but in the meantime, we're really cherishing every minute with this super kitty! (I know, he's just a cat, but it's amazing how attached you can get in a year's time...crazy, huh?) On a positive note, despite the series of unfortunate events, I think you'll get a kick out of seeing this talented kitty. I've never posted anything on You Tube before, so not really sure how to share Pee Wee's talents with all the animal lovers out there who might like to see him in action. If you get a chance, please check it out and share this link with anyone you think would enjoy seeing a "Hemingway Cat" catch treats in his huge 6 toed paws! Please keep a positive thought while we await the lab's results. Make sure you turn up the volume, see him "speak" on command, get on his chair and play "catch" with those super thumbs! Thanks for letting me share this with you all! Jules :)

I want to bring attention to the Vieques Humane Society and Animal Rescue (VHSAR) http://www.viequeshs.org/ which is facing financial problems so severe it will be forced to close. This is the only animal protection organization on the island of Vieques off Puerto Rico and provides low cost and often free veterinary care (as no animal is refused) as well as caring for and finding homes for many abused and unwanted animals. VHSAR has made a big improvement in animal welfare over the years yet there is always so much more to do. If VHSAR is forced to close it would prove a disaster to the entire animal population, wanted and unwanted, on this island. Thank you kindly for reading and for your attention to this.

Dear Ellen, wow what to say, except you rock!!! Anywho, I am just passing along some "bittersweet" info to you about a very large puppymill operation that was taken over and I thought you would be able to help spread the word! Currently, there are close to, if not over 600 dogs that Everett Animal Control and other surrounding area agencies have confiscated, most of which are whelping daily! They are in desperate need of any donations, and are slowly adopting those dogs that can be adopted, via application {I have an app. in, and am awaiting a reply as i write} Gosh, I dont want to make you cry, cause i know you and most likely Portia as well are supportive of God's greatest gifts to us, sometimes stupid, greedy humans. However, i was watching your show onE day, and realized you could get out the word, and help these dogs and the wonderful, yet overwhelmed folks trying so hard to help this huge puppy mill raid. Alot of these dogs were in pretty poor shape, with dire medical needs, living in deplorable filth, so.. sigh. please see Everettanimalshelter {google} and look up puppymill.. I will continue to watch you whenever work aLlows...hey, Portia is on today!! God Bless You, for all you are!! Thanks! Billie ps.. I am a girl, just thought you'd get a laUGH THERE!

There is a rescue center in Savannah Mo, the name of it is Mashoogies. This is one of the most fastenating places. Mr. Gary Silverglat and Mrs. Lisa Silverglat are two of the most caring people I have ever met. Lisa and Gary started rescuing anamals aproximately 20yrs + ago. They provide homes for hundreds of animals. They provide medical care for thoes with special needs. They have also opened a not for profit Vetenary service, it called Angels Vet. They are truley angels. Lisa has built water gardens and many areas in their complex. People are welcome to tour the grounds and there are areas where classes can be held ,on the care animals need to be healthy and conservation classes. The prices at the clinic are affordable and provides services to people who wouldnt be able to afford to have their animals spayed or neutered. They did most of this out of their own pocket and are truley a blessing to many animals. You should come visit , you never know what you will find here, an Eagle, Mountain Lion, various species of birds. Its worht the trip. The clinic can use all the help they can get, volunteers for feeding and maintaining kennels, dog food , cat food, animal food of all kinds. Keep them in mind if you have anything to offer.

Немного не в тему, но вопрос такой возник автору. А почему вы именно вордпресс выбрали для своего блога. Я вот ваш блог постоянно читаю :)

Hi Ellem. We need your help on Long Island they are closing the wantagh location of BideAWee a wonderful nokill shelter. Занятно, хотя не мешало бы чуть подетальней написать, а то есть несколько непонятных моментов :)

Круто написано, действительно все прочитал как говорится на одном дыхании :)

Hi Ellen,

My mom loves your show! i am so glad to hear you also click on the animal rescue site. I have been doing in every day for a year now. The first thing I do when I get up in the morning is go on and click! I love the animals. My cat is a rescue also. My boyfriend rescued him from living in a abandoned house next door to us. he is 2 years old nhe was about 2 months when Ray found him and he was so tiny. Now he is almost 20 pounds. I love my cat, he is the best. I also feed the feral cats here(the ones that are still at the abandoned house that is boarded up. As long as I live here no cat will starve here! I also know a lady who has been helping animals for over 25 years. When I see kittens I call her and she comes to get them and they get their shots, get fixed and go to homes and wait to be adopted. I do what I can.

thanks Ellen,
Tracy from CT

There are also 4 other sites that are attached to it. I have been clicking on its partner The Hunger Site since 2001. You can save some rainforest, feed the hungry, help with child healthcare around the world, give books and help fund mammograms. Make it your homepage and click everyday before you do anything on the web!

Hi Ellen

I just found the animal rescue on your site.
It is so wonderful, I own a pet sitting business and I just love everything on there. I will start making my list to purchase gifts for my furry clients.

Thank you so much.
Kim

Hi Ellen,I've watched how you respond to stories about animals and it is wonderful. My sister,Dr. Joan Laub, lives in Colorado and recently purchased Prairie Wind Wild Animal Sanctuary to keep it from going into foreclosure. She isn't just an animal lover, she's a fanatic! She would do anything possible to save an animal.Unfortunately,it costs a tremendous amount of money to feed and care for the hundreds of animals in the Sanctuary. Could you mention the Prairie Wind Sanctuary on your show? Any support that people are willing to give would be greatly appreciated to keep all the animals safe, fed and sheltered. Thanks Ellen. You're the best.
Judy.

You Rock! NO! You have to much rock for one hand!! Thanks for your passion for animals, this kind of stuff worries me to death all day every day, i have six dogs and one cat. Its so hard not to save them when you find them in need!! keep up all the good work, the world needs a whole lot more people like us!!!!
