you gotta watch the whole thing

Dear Ellen,

My son Cameron is also six years old, in forst grade and a double amputee. I am amazed at the similarities between Cameron and Cody. Happy, full of life, energetic and busy. I cannot begin to tell you how wonderful it was to see him on your show. So many people want to say how sorry they feel when they meet Cameron and I tell them to spend a day with him and they will no longer feel that way. Having Cody on your show allows others to see that it is not a live sentence, it is how you choose to live your life. Cameron inspires people daily. He is a blessing and I thank you for sharing Cody's story for the wrold to see!

Dear Ellen,

I'm a mother of four from Kentucky. My 5 year old, Logan, just lost the lower portion of his leg due to a surgery that went bad. His leg was amputated on July 29. My family has gone through a terrible time, trying to figure everything out. Logan has been very confused and has had a hard time dealing with all of this. This story has really inspired him and the rest of our family. It's done him a world of good to see a little boy his age with more of a handicap than even him. He now has hope to run and play again soon.

Thank you,
Charle'

Dear Ellen,

I just caught the segment of Cody while looking on your website, what an awesome kid. I must have missed your show this day, as I watch everyday (even the reruns). Seeing this segment & seeing what Cody can overcome makes me believe & have hope for my 2 boys. I have a 6yr old & a 1yr old who will be celebrating a birthday soon. Although they don't have to overcome such a serious obstacle as Cody has had to overcome, they still have some hurdles to get over. My older son was diagnosed with Petit Mal Epilepsy about 2yrs ago; he was diagnosed with asthma shortly after birth & at about 4yrs old it was determined that he would need speech and occupational therapies. This year he will be tested for ADHD. My youngest was given a referral & it has been determined that he would also need speech & some occupational therapy. They both have abnormally high palates, which hinders their speech, they mispronounce words & leave out certain letters in their words. This results in alot of translation on my part, I usually understand them more than others do. I say usually because there are times one of them will ask for or say something I quite don't understand & I have to "drill" them to find out what it is. When he was younger this led to alot of frustration on my older sons part, he would have a melt down if he wasn't understood (even if he was only expressing an observation & not asking for his needs to be met). I often wonder what kind of obstacles they may face, especially with my older son. His speech has improved significantly, but because he has some medical problems I wonder if that will effect him negatively later on in life.

I can only hope that my sons don't see the issues they have to face right now as obstacles, but if they do I hope they will try their hardest to overcome them as Cody has.

May God Bless Cody & his family & always give him the strength to persevere.

I love your show & try to watch it everyday. You're one of the best there is & I hope you can continue to be the best for a long time. :)

Hi Ellen,
I am a kindergarten teacher and last year I had a student who was a double amputee just like Cody. Cameron was such an awesome kid. He was very willing to talk about and answer questions about his "special legs." Thanks for having Cody on your show. Nancy

Ellen,

I love that kid, Cody. He is not only adorable but his happiness and love of life is contagious. It really makes me think about all I have and how grateful I need to remember to be. He is inspiring and really makes me smile. It amazes me how much we learn from children.

What song played for Ellen and Cody? Watching them dance.....How can you not love this song now?

Ellen,

Thank you for introducing us to Cody! What an amazing little guy he is!

As someone who has spent most of my adult life working with people with disabilities (and in fact, I now live with two friends who have disabilities), Cody's perspective on life, and his "can do" attitude/perspective proves what some of us are fortunate enough to have witnessed in others who are physically, emotionally, or intellectually challenged: one is oftentimes only limited by those around him or her.

Fortunately for Cody, his parents have big shoulders and lots of love for him.

Peace,
Fred
