You're As Young As You Poll

Thursday, the wonderfully inspirational 70-year-old first grader, Alferd Williams, talked to Ellen about finally realizing his dream of learning how to read. Alferd said that you can teach old dogs new tricks, they're just not as fast as the new dogs.

This was an awesome guest! I cried and I had to share the story with all my co-workers.

I was so touched by your show yesterday, I fell asleep last night thinking of a way that I might be able to find a little extra in my budget this month to donate to Mr. Williams. I don’t have much but would love to give what I can. I know what it is like to have dreams, and feel like they cant be achieve, if I could just do a little to help Mr. Williams achieve his dream, I would feel blessed.

yes.. sylvia brown says if you give up on life... you die. I see in my grams living around old people that are negative and complain all the time about their aches and issues that she is definately being affected... mind over body thing. When I stayed with her for 2 weeks... I got her out everyday... and she was able to sleep at night without a sleeping pill... doctors in my opionion are pill pushers.. and well... I think excersize, good nutrition and a positive outlook.. keeping active and hanging out with smart choice people(positive younger friends!!) is a great idea in a healthy pursuit of youth! Again.. going back to Dr. Dwyer!.. he's right on a lot of things.. A LOT!... and your thoughts do govern your body.. a physiological change down to individual cells.. and to your soul occurs... well.. I'm getting deep but you get my point! :)

This is a novel topic! for sure :) so many facets!

Ellen, please, please, please post a copy of the tape of yesterday's show with Alfred. I have so many people (including my children) that I want to share that segment with. My children are no doubt going to empty their piggy banks when they hear his heartwarming story and see how genuine and loveable he is. That is the most beautiful man I have ever seen and his smile reminds me of Bill Cobsy!!! Please post the tape or let us know how to find it! We want to help!!!!! xoxo Tracey Anderson Edgewood, WA

i think this is the first time i cried watching ellen! what an incredible story! thank you for sharing it with us!

I had to let you know how much I enjoyed seeing Alfred and his teacher on your show. What a great message!! I am from Missouri as well , and finally a Missourian who makes it on a talk show that isn't Jerry Springer's!!! I would also love to donate to help Alfred build his house on a hill. You make me smile!

Ellen, thank you so much for sharing Alferd story with us. What an inspiration to us all! His sunny disposition is contagious and I was wondering how best we could help him with his home dream. How can we donate??? Thanks for all you do - your show does so much good. I love it!!!

Ellen, I was wondering if I could get a copy of Alfred on your show? I teach mild to moderate Special Ed students. Reading and learning in general has been a hard road for them and a lot of them have given up. I think Alfred is very inspirational and I would like to show them this clip.

Thanks!!!!!

My heart was filled with joy when I saw Alferd and his teacher. I grew up in St. Joseph, MO and now live in Portland, OR, but I have always felt a connection to my home town. Alferd was genuine and his thankfulness was genuine. What can we do to help him accomplish his dream?

What a great segment in your show. Mr. Williams reaction to the gift was incredibly heartwarming. I'd like to contribute to the cause; how do I do that?

Dear Ms. Ellen,

When we got home from school yesterday, my brother and I watched your show my Mommy Tivo's for us everyday. My little brother and I would like to help Mr. Alfred with his dream of building his house. We both want to empty our Piggy banks and Mommy said she would match the money. How do we get the money to him? I would love to have him in my 7th grade class.

Ellen, love your show, but Mr Alfred was stole the show. He is an inspiration for all of America to see. I would love to help contribute to his dream. Are you going to set something up so your fans and his fans can help?
I got hooked on your show one year ago in April. When I was recovering from back surgery and you hurt your back. YOur show kept me laughing during a tough recovery.
thanks for being a good role model for all

Thank you so much for your show everyday, but Mr. Williams on your show was so heartwarming. He is truly a hardworking man. Where can we donate to help build his home?

I LOVE "Alferd" as spelled on his hat. His name should be "Sugar." This man is a wonderful light among what has been a dark year for me. I needed him. Where may I make a rather small donation (because of my current situation) to his home? I would give this man whatever I can.

Oh my gosh Ellen! Mr. Williams is a beautiful man! And his teacher! How sweet is she!! Her tears said it all. I'm so glad you had these two on, they were wonderful. Thanks Ellen for everything. (Ellen, check your emails. I entered many times as did my friends, on my behalf, to win one of the GMCs.)

Love,
Colleen

P.S. Oh, will you please post the tape of Mr. Williams? He was so exuberant as was his teacher. Thanks again Ellen.

Ellen:
Thank you for making so many people's lives a little brighter. I record your show and watch late at night. Almost without exception I am laughing so hard, that my husband or daughter come to see what's going on. Tonight I watched Alfred get overjoyed by the gift you gave. I know in your world it was an easy gift to give...but what you did will quite possibly change his life. It was incredible to watch. To top it off you gave the "non-cheater" (Ha, just kidding) a trip to Hawaii, when she didn't expect it...and again an act of kindness, freely given, it brightens the world.
I think about writing to you all the time because your show touches me so often, but tonight I really had to do it. So, from small town Indiana a very BIG thank you for using your gift of comedy to make me laugh out loud, and for using your resources to make this world a nicer place. Bravo!

Hi Ellen although you are a terrific dancer I'D like to show you some new moves. Although your good ya think a few new moves ud kill ya once in a while? (just kiddin, not!) Thank You for showing Mr. Williams today, He is a real inspiration. He taught me: It's never to late to do what you want and need to do, and be proud to accomplish whatever it may be.

How can we Help Alferd Williams to built his house any link to donate?

"Thanks for this show" It really made my day. To see someone that tried so hard for sooooo long to fulfil a promise to his mother and was rewarded for his tenacity. His Joy came through the screen and lit my soul. My eyes filled with tears of joy for both Aflred, his teacher and you. I was happy for the rest of the day. I didn't have to wait til Friday to get happy. That show did it for me today. Thanks for giving us all so, much hope. Wow. Wow. Wow.
