What gives people the right to judge other people. Isn't that your Gods job to do that? I am tired of hearing from religious people that want to control everything they believe is wrong in Gods view. Let your God make that decision. Religion, when picking and choosing what to believe and preach, create borders around countries and in peoples minds.
Katrina, it sounds like you might think Obama is a joke and lacking because you think he is Islamic. He is not Islamic, please get your facts correct before you add your prejudice. Thank you.
Senator Obama is a joke, so is the lack of his legislative status, as he doesn't have any to back him. Good for McCain for going on this show and confronting her on this issue. One Nation Under God. That is what we are, even if our Islamic presidential candidate refuses to acknowledge the Christian principles that are the foundation of this great nation.
In response to donna about obama and john mccain and money hungry small minded people....I am not small minded nor money hungry nor do I have money in my pocket..Regardless of my money size or my mind size....i believe that the rights given to me by our forefathers is my right till I die, not till current politician(s) decide it isnt...yes, I am gay. I do love Ellen.
John McCain is a joke, man, a friggin' joke. HOW could anyone continue to put these small-minded money hungry people as commanders in chiefs!? The only people I know who are even considering McCain are the people with more money. I am so sick of the way we, the American people, are manipulated!
I say,"BOO to you John" Remember all the Bush supporters!? Not so much anymore, huh? We DO need a change! Go Obama!
I completely agree with Garald. Let people live the life they choose. You do not choose who you fall in love with.. It just happens.. It is a fact of life.
Having a negative " opinion "is just that, an opinion. Unfortunately some go a little overboard.
Seriously.. Is there nothing else better to do with your time? Everyone can have thier beliefs and there is nothing wrong with that.. But also have an open mind.
They are very important issues in the world that would be better suited by your help. Poverty, war, diseases that are not controllable yet.
I send my Congrats to you both Ellen. You are a woman of influence, power.. You are kind and giving and understanding and always willing to help someone else. The fact that you are in love and have been together with Portia so long now shows you are probably better than most.
Lot's of people do it for the wrong reason.. and for the right reason, or maybe the right reason at the time. But to have true love and keep it, to see how you are in public and how much you share with us on a daily basis of yur private life.. Shows just how much character you both have. That you have the strength and ability to stay focused on one another. That is a very rare quality to have. And you both do. It does not get better than that.
I wish you both a very long and happy life together.. I am sure we will see the Ellen Degeneres Show for years to come and see your 5-10-15 year wedding anniversary.. Congrats again
Gotta share somethings with whoever reads this. Until gay and lesbians are seen as equals, things like the following will unfortunately continue. Someone has tried to kill my partner and myself because of who we are, they did not succeed. I have had glass bottles thrown out of cars while with a group of friends walking peacefully down the street simply because who I am, they were trying to hurt us, they did not succeed. I have had someone try to destroy my business because of who I am, they did not succeed. I am a lesbian, and they will never succeed.
Ellen, you are a courageous woman and I admire you tremendously. You had the guts to come out years ago on your tv show, you had the guts to stand up to John McCain (of all people) about what's right and fair for EVERYBODY, regardless of whomever they love,--and you have the guts to walk the talk by marrying the person you love. I don't think it's important whom you love, but THAT YOU, INDEED, LOVE. From what I've observed watching your show, your love and care for people and animals shines through in everything you say and do. I wish you every happiness and I look forward to the day when gay marriage and a woman's right to choose are no longer issues. It is absolutely shocking to me that people can get so rattled about those two non-issues while having no problem blowing up people in a phony war.
Garald,
In response to your message addressed to Miss Lady and myself I would like to point out a few things, first of all I recognize the fact that you have freedom to choose what you do in this life, in this case have a homosexual relationship but to have a homosexual marriage is a different story. As you stated "FYI, marriage is sanctioned by the government..." therefore Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address would apply here "...government of the people, by the people, for the people..." Our government is run by the people. How is this possible? Well the majority wins otherwise if it was run for what every individual wants we would never get anything accomplished because you can't please everyone separately because there would be disorder. So if the majority says Marriage is only between man and woman then that's the way it should be because the government is run by the people.
In addition to that, through out our Nation's governing documents, God has been acknowledged, such as in the Declaration of Independence.
I declare that my God exists, he dictates what marriage is to me and others of my faith this affects my decision on how I want the society I live in to function therefore I choose to express my beliefs and stand up against homosexual marriages.
As for the California supreme court, again Majority spoke up and stated how they wanted Marriage defined, they were creating a law and the courts told them they couldn't. Now in addition to that my understanding is gay couples had every protection and benefit of the law under a civil union and yet they continue to push the issue about having a marriage. Why is that? If they already have everything a heterosexual couple has why do they push the issue to have a marriage? Could it be because they feel guilty for what they are actually doing and so to alleviate that guilt they want society to give the stamp of approval?
To summarize, God does live, he has said Marriage is between a man and a woman, we know this through living prophets who receive direct revelation from God.
There is a big difference between being rude and saying something that someone does not want to hear.
Ellen, I love you. I wish you the best. You are witty and talented and the sky's the limit for you. God bless you in all your endeavours.
But now comes the part you won't like. There are moral absolutes and just because you don't believe in them doesn't make them so.
Race is sacred, sex is also sacred. One cannot change his race. One can appear to change his sex, but is just appearance. Sex is only morally correct between a man and a woman. If you choose to do something outside of those guidelines knowing the potential outcome, it's on you. You are choosing to make your union "official" knowing that it is morally wrong.
Reconsider.
I love Jesus, and would never harm anyone with heterosexual tendencies. I would love them just as Jesus would.
This is a complex issue that in some ways has been handeled very poorly by mainstream Christianity. My greatest role model is Jesus Christ who demonstrated both real compassion (unlike the religous Pharisees of the day) not condemnation -yet encourages us to live a life pleasing to God. I love the story in the New Testament when Mary Magdalane was brought to Jesus having been caught in adultery. She knew that here accusers were ready to stone her to death and Jesus made a poignant statement, "If anyone is without sin please cast the first stone".One by one they left the square and yet the One who was absolutely innocent said,"Where are your accusers? Neither do I accuse you. But go away and sin no more." Jesus demonstated compassion and also gave a directive. In a pluralistic society it can seem an affront to abide by God's strict guidelines on sexuality: between a man and a woman in marriage. (Incidentally that mean sex before marriage of any kind and outside of marriage is forbidden by God). I love Jesus and would never harm anyone with homosexual tendencies. I would love them as people just as Jesus would. Now that I have come to know Jesus I realise that His plans are the best for each of our lives and would pray that Ellen would know how great His love for her is. I believe in God's Word and do sometimes feel that the Church needs to demonstrate that special love that Jesus shows us and provide guidance for those around us. I admire Ellen's comedic talent and she is in my prayers that she will know the person of Jesus.
I think if you fine true love which it pretty hard to find in this day and age if no matter if it's two women or two mens if you truly love that person so why not get married , be happy because life it realy is to short so enjoy it who ever you are with and for people who dont understand about love get a life
Miss Lady and Andy Brown,
Interesting how you spew forth opinions as if they were fact.
**>Marriage is a tradition that has existed since the first man and women walked the earth. Marriage is sanctioned by God.
Really? Were you there? Where do you get your information. Sanctioned by God? Your God? Whose God? I suppose your version of God is the only correct version. FYI, marriage is sanctioned by the government, not God. Do you get your marriage license from God? Does God give you tax breaks and hundreds of legal benefits because of the legal contract of marriage? Or does the government do that? If marriage is sanctioned by God, then the benefits of marriage should be restricted to "Godly" benefits, (whatever that would be) not federal and state government benefits. As an AMERICAN, I am entitled to the same LEGAL benefits as you, without discrimination. You choose your life partner, I choose mine. Your choice does not take precedence over mine.
**>But to deem a homosexual relationship equal to that of marriage between man and woman is going against reason, tradition, and nature.
Against reason? Whose reason? Yours? Certainly not mine. Tradition? Continuing to do something just because it's "always been that way" even for "thousands of years" is not an excuse to keep doing it. Thank God we evolve as a society. Otherwise YOU would not be able to vote in the upcoming election, neither would your black neighbor. Do you realize inter-racial marriage was ILLEGAL in this country? Do you support discrimination for "tradition's" sake? You can cling to your tradition if you choose. Just don't expect me and everyone else to cling to it too. Against nature? really? Homosexuality IS nature for a homosexual, not against nature; just against YOUR nature.
Just because YOU don't "think" people are born gay doesn't mean you're right. Have you pondered the possibility... you could be wrong? Then what?
America is about "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" for ALL Americans. Marriage is about FAMILY, and YOU DO NOT get to define what that is. Just because my family is different than your family, it is still just as valid.
**>But in reality everyone has homosexual tendencies.
Really? Do you have any research to back up this claim? Or have you accepted your opinion as fact?
**>The courts do not have the right to decide that nor to pass legislation, their job is to simply interpret the law.
That's exactly what the court in California did. Interpreted the California constitution, and decided that, according to the constitution, discrimination was not legal. Go figure. They did not make a law or pass legislation. But I guess since you don't agree with the court's interpretation... they were wrong. There were plenty of people who disagreed with the U.S. Supreme Court's interpretation/decisions that ended "legal" racial segregation and discrimination in this country. I wouldn't be surprised if they used the exact same words you used. Where would we be today had your argument prevailed?
**>The Majority of people in society decide on what is appropriate for the society we live in so if the Majority decides marriage is simply between a man and a woman then that's the way it is.
NOT in AMERICA. This country is not about "majority rule". Our forefathers who wrote the constitution saw to that. The constitution protects INDIVIDUAL liberty - not that of the majority. It is the obligation of the government and the courts to PROTECT the minority from the tyranny of the majority(you). That's what makes this country great. You don't get to tell me how to live my life, even though you think you should. If you don't get it... just look elsewhere where the "majority" ruled, for example, IRAQ. Don't stop there... there are plenty of horrific examples throughout history.
**>Women and blacks did not choose their gender or skin color and therefore they were being treated unequally but acting out on sexual impulses is a choice and therefore you choose the consequences associated with that choice.
Andy, don’t you know ANY gay people? Why don’t you ask them about “acting out on sexual impulses” and their “choice”. Just a suggestion... be open to their answer.
People are people. Male, female, black, white, straight or gay. There is no need for discrimination. People meet, fall in love, and have a right to celebrate love. People, as a society, have the right to MARRIAGE, not just some 'CIVIL UNION' that pacifies those who discriminate. I am happy that you have the opportunity to MARRY the woman you've fallen in love with!
Happy to be me,
I apologize if I sounded judgemental for "thinking" that people aren't born gay. But I promise I am FAR from judgemental of you and other gay friends of the world. And thanks for writing back. My point was.. everyone has homosexual thoughts... EVERYONE!!!! I admit that I do. Anyone who says they haven't is lying. It's just that in some people thoughts turn to feeling and emotion and lust. And then in-turn, feelings become ACTION. Having those feelings is normal...acting on them is what makes you "gay." It is NATURAL to feel that way, because everyone has those feelings. Had situations gone differently in my life I could totally be in your shoes. I guess my point is, I could have been gay, anyone can be gay. You ain't special girl!! :) You just chose to ACT on feelings everyone and they mama has everyday.
Thinking the way i do doesn't mean I'm judgmental. If anything I'm far from it. I have homosexual thougthts TOO girl. How dare I judge you when I've had the same feelings as you. I just never allowed those feelings to cause me to act them out.
It's dangerous for us to teach our children that when you have homosexual feelings you "might" be gay. Because EVERYONE has them. Is everyone gay?Put a lie detector on anyone...ask them if they have ever had a homosexual thought. 100% YES! The same kid's that will pick on a "gay" kid has those same feelings. They are just so much more disturbed by their own feelings that they find someone to pick on. Just because you have feelings for people of the same sex doesn't mean your gay.
Thats why is it SOOOOOO stupid and foolish to look down on gay people, hate gay people, or judge gay people. Cuz everyone thinks gay thoughts. We are all more the same then we are different!! It's just some people for whatever reason chose to act on those feelings.
Agree? Disagree? Please write back Happy to be me...or anyone. I want to hear more sides of this.

I BELIEVE THAT THERE IS ONLY ONE PERSON WHO CAN JUDGE US AND THAT IS GOD. WE ARE FREE TO BE WHO WE WANT TO BE. PEOPLE SHOULD JST FORGET ABOUT THE BIBLE AND WHAT IT SAYS. I BELIEVE THAT PEOPLE HAVE GONE THROUGH THINGS YOU PROBABLY CANT EVEN IMAGIN AND THATS WHAT MADE THEM THE WAY THEY ARE AND PEOPLE SHOULD JUST WORRY ABOUT THEM SELVES. CAUSE AT THE END OF THE DAY IT ONLY COMES TO ONLY GOD CAN JUDGE ME.
