Ay Carumba!

Last night, I ate at a Mexican restaurant. I tried ordering in Spanish. I’m getting pretty good at it. “Una ‘Margarita!... y mucho tequila por favor!” Yo es loco! I noticed something last night that I believe is an international phenomenon. ...or I was drunk. Either way, I have to say, I believe Mexican restaurants have the best service ever. And it starts as soon as you get your table. Right when you sit down, they bring you baskets of hot fresh chips and spicy salsa. You don’t even have to ask for them. It’s like a delicious free gift. They bring them out, “With compliments from the chef.” You’d never eat three baskets of chips at home, but at a Mexican restaurant, you just pop ‘em in your mouth one after another like you just got outta Alcatraz. It’s a feeding frenzy -- until you run out of salsa! That’s when the panic starts. You look around for anyone who’ll help you. “Excuse me, we need more salsa. Our salsa dish is dry... so dry.” Have you ever noticed no one will eat the last chip? Finally, someone pokes their finger into it, breaking it into four mini-chips. Then, it’s time to order and the plates are enormous. You think you just ordered a taco, but when they bring it out, it’s a giant platter with a pile of rice and hillside of beans. And it’s all under a thick blanket of cheese. Then the waiter says, “Muy caliente!” ...which I now realize does not mean “grab the plate!”

Have you ever had sopapias? pronounce it "Soapa Pea us" Its a breaded appetizer.. I think its a dessert? but it comes hot/warm.. temperature and you can squeeze honey inside it and pop it in your mouth. Its really good. We served it and chips at the mexican restaurant I waitressed in.

I love mexican food!!! I like enchilada and chimichanga! Ft Wayne, Indiana had ChiChi's which we went there a lot. I was told chi chi means boob... I don't know.. someone pulling my leg??? I don't know. It was a joke I'd say before going there for lunch in the 80's. its not there anymore.

temperature hot food is good.. just like when you have coffee you want it hot!!! It taste better hot. But when your hungry and you have to blow on it to cool down... its like damn... I"m starving here.. but in 10 minutes time.. your cruisin on downin your meal!!!.. and its a meal! THe salads are SOOOoo good too... chips.. I love the chips... I like extra hot salsa... Hi, Ellen! We love dining at our favorite Mexican restaurant! We love the complimentary chips and salsa, but when we order our main course, we're like "why'd we do that? We could just have chips, salsa, and plenty of BEER!!!" Keep enjoying and making us laugh! Love Ya! WENDY

Unfortunately, the only things that are guaranteed to be vegetarian in a mexican restaurant are chips, salsa & tequila. The beans are made w/lard & the rice is often made w/stock. I only go to a mexican restaurant for union meetings. Since I can't eat anything but chips & salsa, I make up for the lack of a meal w/tequila shots! Muy loco!!!

YOU ARE SO FUNNY. WHEN EVER I HAVE A BAD DAY I JUST TURN ON YOUR SHOW AND I HAPPY AGAIN. I LOVE MEXICAN FOOD ALSO AND I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU MEAN ABOUT THOSE PLATES. I'VE DONE THAT TOO. AND IT TURNS OUT, ACCORDING TO LATEST NEWS, THAT MEXICAN FOOD IS ACTUALLY VERY GOOD FOR US AND PEOPLE WHO EAT IT ON A REGULAR BASIS HAVE LESS HEALTH PROBLEMS AND LESS REPORTS OF CANCER. MOST LIKELY THOSE HOT PEPPERS THAT I LOVE SO MUCH. PROBLEM IS..THE OLDER I GET THE LESS I CAN EAT THEM....SO MAYBE I'LL TRY EATING EARLIER!! THANKS FOR MAKING ME/ALL OF US LAUGH..IT'S GOOD FOR OUR SOULS!

I love mexican food ... a lot. But I find I eat more stir fry than anything. I also like a good salmon or halibut or a filet mignon!!! A sweet dessert /desert? wine is really tastey!!! I do like to go wine tasting!!!! Its fun!! and sometimes depending where your at the first 5 tastes are FREE!!!! OHHHH... and touring a wine or a beer joint is the best ... I walk away with a buzz ALL THE TIME!!! and then the scary part is ... I drive off!!!.. drive home. Ste Michelle Winery here in Washington! Nice place to go. Also we have Yakima, Wa... lots of winery's there! Family/locally grown grapes in eastern Washington! I wanted to walk into the grape fields but my sister and grams stopped me... I embarrase them... my thought.. worse case.. they can say .. don't go in there.. or worse worse case scenario... get off my property.. and then the very bad case.. call the cops!!! LOL its not like i was going to go in there and touch all the grapes!... just to experience a taste of the grove.. the feel of it.. that's all... ! :)

Hi Ellen,
I live in New Mexico so we are blessed to have the best food ever, our main question is red or green. I enjoy this small restaurant in Espanola, NM called Angelina's where the food is so authentic and the chili rellenos are just to die for. I enjoy watching your show and you are always making us laugh.

All restaurants in Chicago, except for those going under, offer excellent service, and, if not chips, bread, or fruit, with butter or EVOO.

Blame the servers, not the category. Sounds like a lot of future divas and divers? are marking time until their big breaks.

In Chicago, it's about the here and now, not the misty maybe future.

Why do you speak spanish in a Mexican restaurant? In Chicago everyone speaks English, some better than others.

Just a gentle nudge: you might want to lay off those chips; the beam is getting a little broad.

Hey, Ellen! I love Mexican food, too! There's a great little hole in the wall in Skokie (just outside Chicago)called El Tipico & they have the best salsa & the strongest, cheapest & yummiest 'ritas around & the waiters are muy guapo! Stop by & grab one while you're in town...(I meant a margarita, not a waiter!LOL!)

I watch you everyday & we love you here in Chicago! Enjoy your visit, maybe I'll see you in the riff raff room! Adios!

Love, Neelie in Skokie

Hi Ellen,

Don't have time to watch to much tv as I work full time and then come home to a busy household with twin 3 year olds. So I don't get much of a chance to watch your show but we love you. I love to eat and know of a few Mexican joints that have excellent food - hit me up if you are ever in the mood for some good stuff (food) of course.

Thanks for all your good humor.
Maria

Hey Ellen,
You always make me laugh and I love your thoughts. But i know lately your mother has been correcting you and I guess you want to improve since no one else is telling your mistakes...jajaja. Well if your mother doesnt know spanish I can help you in that area since I'm from El Salvador. But you said: "Yo es loco!" meaning I are crazy (male term)!... Well good try but that is not quite right. You can say: Yo soy loca! or Yo estoy loca!
Hope this helps you out whenever you want to tell anyone in spanish that you are crazy....jajajaja.
If you need more help in spanish, just let me know.

Hi Ellen, I think you are right, I have always had the nicest staff at mexican restaurants. I think mexicans are wonderful. Have you ever wondered though if they reuse the left over chips and salsa? It would be very tempting to just pour it all back in another basket! Even though I think they could do this, I still eat them! Love Your Show, Maggie

Hi Ellen,

I have never thought about that before, but always try to avoid the chips because I know that I have a huge plate of food coming for my entrée. (and I can focus on my margarita) The service is consistently excellent because I’ve never left anything less than a hefty tip for their attention to my needs: They always bring my margaritas really fast.

Thank you Ellen, for all of the laughs!
