Animal Rescuers

I watch Animal Planet a lot. I get up very early and start my day watching, “Animal Miracles.” They tell true stories of animals doing amazing things. Usually it’s a story about a dog who rescues its owners. I’ve noticed a trend. They only save their owners. They’re selfish. “Oh no, if he goes, so do the bacon strips!” Everyone thinks of dogs saving people, but cats save people too. Why don’t they have more cats on the police force? “Whiskers, pat ‘em down.” That’s gotta hurt. Fish don’t really save anybody. Those are tragic stories. They jump out of their bowl... get to the phone… their fin dials “9” ...and that’s it. They can’t do any more. That ends badly for both owner and fish. I usually TiVo through those stories.

I heard a story about dolphins in Australia surrounding a swimmer in the ocean because there was a great white shark in the area. Isn’t that amazing? They were protecting the swimmer. Or, maybe they were playing a dolphin game called, “Guard Your Man.” I don’t know why more people don’t have dolphins as pets. I’d like that. Of course, the bowl would have to be really big. Then there’s that amazing story about the ape that raised the baby. ...Oh wait, that’s Tarzan.

Animal_rescuers.. Slap-up :)

Hi Ellen!
I understand that you have a true passion for animal rescues. I have a neat story for you! My husband & I were recently looking on line for a wolf/shepherd mix, after seeing many dogs ranging in price from 200.00 to 2000.00 I finally was tired of the search. I suggested we go to Craig's List in our area. There we found a link for a german/belgian shepherd mix. That link led us to our "animal rescuer". Her name is Abbie, she is the mother of 3 children, 6 years old and younger. Abbie, who lives in Michigan, is connected with animal shelters in Ohio and other states surrounding Michigan. Abbie is on call from these shelters, when the shelter is running out of room, Abbie is called to come and rescue the litter that will soon be put down. Abbie drove all the way to Ohio to rescue our puppy and her siblings! She brings these animals that are near death's door home, she takes them to the Vet has them doctored, brings them into her household to adapt them to children and a loving environment, then advertises them to find good homes for them. Abbie loves animals! I find her to be a remarkable woman and I wanted you to know about her! We are so impressed with what she does, we named our beautiful little shepherd/husky mix after her rescuer...we call her Abby! If you are interested in contacting this remarkable woman, please email me and I will get you the information you request! I will email you a picture of our beautiful little puppy too! Thanks! I believe people like Abbie should be recognized for their efforts! Thanks, Ellen!

Hi Ellen,
I've seen your show when you've helped people adopt out their kittens. Well I've got a bit of an unusual situation, my boyfriend and I adopted a kitten that showed up on his porch and absolutely fell in love with his personality and his loving affection. But he had a few little problems being a stray, one of those included was having a cyst on his back located on his spine the cyst was said to have not been an issue but this last Friday the cyst burst putting pressure on his spine resulting in his hind legs becoming mostly paralyzed. He still can flex them but he cannot walk with the back one's, so now he drags them around with his front legs. I love him very much but I've already spent a couple hundred dollars in vet bills, I'm in the process of moving, and I'm a college student and already working two jobs. I just can't afford all that he needs. Friday were scheduled to go to the vet again which I am most likely going to have to put him down, I really really don't want to have to do that he's still so vivacious! I don't know if you could announce on your show that if anyone wants a loving compainion who needs lots of care, that I can't give to him, so that he can have a better chance at a second life. Please help if you can little ButterBean would be
most appreciative!
Thank you

I don't have a comment on this story...I have a comment on the fact that is stinks that we can no longer listen to your show at work on our radios, since the broadcast changes took affect, it also affect the tv/radio band radios...Several of us here at work have checked around and we are being told that nothing is in the works for this...I'm so bummed as I just about feel asleep today at my desk without your humor, music and just your up-beat attitude on life...Keep you the good work and hope to listen to you soon!

Hi Ellen,
I am very involved with a cat rescue (non profit organization)group which started with the Katrinia Rescue. We are in Athens GA. Currently we are feeding 82 cats and kittens in around Athens, We received donations but it not enough to pay for the spay and neuter and vet billsand the cat food. We need help. We have rescued in the past 4 years, had vet checked and adopted over 500 cats and kittens. But our group has run out of money. I understand you have a friend with a group called Halo, but I do not know how to contact her. Can you please have her contact me thru my email and I can give her further information. You can also read about our group in the Critter Magazine, which you can find on the web. Our group is called Disaster Relief Animal Rescue of Athens GA. Our president actually started the organization when he went to New Orleans after Katrinia to help rescue many of the stranded animals. Thank you Sue Jordan and Bill Koehlke

Hi Ellen

Thanks for speaking up for animal rescue and shelter adoptions! I am an animal lover, cats are my pet of choice, currently have 4, all rescues. They provide unconditional love and have the funniest personalities. Mine follow me all over the house and all sleep in bed with me every night.

In addition to supporting local shelters and rescue groups, I am also a volunteer at a low cost spay/neuter clinic. Unfortunately, there are so many unwanted animals, and it is trajic to think about of the animals that don't make it to a forever home. Please devote some time on your show to the subject and importance of spay/neuter of your pet.

I know by working together, we can improve the lives of so many animals.

Thank you again Ellen! For everyone else reading, please spread the word about spay/neuter and helping with pet overpopulation. Thanks

I know that you are a true animal lover. I am also very much an animal lover. I have noticed that a very popular singer has been a guest on your show is a fur coat lover. Please let me know your feelings on this subject.

hey ellen congratulations on the wedding . me and my mom watch your show everyday . i like it whe you have the animals on. we have 3 pets ourself 2 cat one that someone threw out and ane pure white cat named whitey that we rescued from the humanes associaty 9 years ago. the other cats name is tinker . then we have a lab. mixed with a mallumute. she has bedroom blue eyes. her name is daisy. at one time we had 14 different pets at once but whitey saved ivy my sister from a bee since she is badly allergic to them . a bee got into the house and the cat jumped up about 6 1/2 feet and snapped it right in half. then he walks off like nothing happened . but if dolphins were pets i would have one.

ellen ur funnier than the most funniest person on this planet .damn!!!!!!no wait that is u!!!!!!

Ellen,
I love the show that I have seen on animal rescue. I work in a correctional facility and run a dog apprenticeship. We get rescued animals from the SPCA and the inmates train them and love and care for them. It is a wonderful program for all involved.

this is a win-win program, and our adoption rate is at 95%. If you are ever looking for a great loving dog, let me know.

i agree with helping animals fully. in fact i foster kittens every time they need me i have three right now as we speak. they are so sweet and innocent and i feel bad for them when there neglected or abused or just left behind. how anyone can do that to an animal or human being is beyond me./

Hi,

Those dolphins are pretty amazing... I was once protected by a school of dolphins when there was a shark nearby... but you have to return the favour.... little does anyone know but the natural enemy of dolphins is Tom Cruise... all that jumping around, the excitement puts them on edge. Give them a bottle of liquid prozac and that will knock out even the most ADHD affected Tom Cruise...

From your Aussie friend,
Samantha

I have my first rescue dog and he is the most fantastic animal I have ever had. When I was first introduced to him, I was horrified how afraid he was of people. He would crouch down and just shake and would try to get away. I found out from his foster mom that he had been rescued by the local police department. She told me some of the other pups had to be put down as well as the parents. These animals had been beaten, chained up and pretty much left. Anyway, I got him through a Lab rescue website. I almost gave him back to his foster parents after a few months because of his fears. Now, after 3 years, he is awesome. He is still afraid of men and some women, will shake if someone approaches him, but is totally devoted to me as I am to him. I think everyone should think about rescuing a dog before they get a young pup. I have talked with other folks at the dog park (Bruno's favorite place) and they all agree about these dogs...they just need a chance. I will never ever get another puppy without checking out the rescue dog sites. I got mine in South Carolina and had to get permission from the rescue foundation to bring him with me to California.
