My Thought...And I Do Have One

LEAPIN' LIZARDS!
Lately, I’ve been finding lizards in the house that my cats bring in. I find the lizard in the middle of two or three of my cats. That’s gotta be fun for the lizard. I think my cats just wanna play with it. It’s a game they call, “Whack the Lizard with Your Paw.” And the poor lizard just wants to play a game where he’s not the one who gets whacked... like Monopoly or hopscotch. When I saw the little lizard, it wasn’t moving... I heard they play dead. Apparently, they have some theatrical training. They stay in character, too, ‘cause they play dead all the way until I take ‘em back outside. Then they give me a little wink and I let ‘em go. Lizards are smarter than people think. They can also change their colors. This one’s chest turned bright blue. Either that or it was choking. I did see another lizard giving it the Heimlich maneuver. You’d think that when they made it back home, they would warn other lizards and spread the news. “Hey, word on the street is stay away from that sliding door... the one with the cats and old lizard tails.” I don’t know why the cats are bringing them inside. Maybe they’re trying to show off the house... “Here’s the living room... this is where I sleep... and if you go like this, “Meeooowww,” that lady’ll feed you.

I agree with sarah. I think they think it's some wonderful present. My cat's used to do it all the time, they'd leave mice and moles on the rug in front of the door....which when i was younger my mother made me pick up and take them outside. I got used to it. They kill them but, They don't eat them, which makes it worse!!! I had to remove them from the outside too...I'd pick em up by the tail with a leaf an then put them on this little blue skate board(which i never used cuz i had no balance) and push them across the street and bury them. I used to lie to my mom and tell her I threw them in the woods! She told me to do that but I felt bad.

Lizards are really cool. I love the hell out of them, make me smile. I have a gecko myself, my fiance two bearded dragons, knowing us its definitely not gonna stop there. Hey and good for you not letting your cats go for the kill.

Hi ellen i am from england and my cats are always bringing other animals in the house, mice, frogs, and once my oldest cat brought a bee in the house he had it trapped in his mouth between his teeth like a cage. I was so scared that he would get stung but luckily he didnt. Cats bring animals in the house as presents. I think your wicked ellen. Thanks for making me laugh everyday.xxxx

Hi Ellen

I love you and your show. I just want to share a past experience. When I was about 10 years old I was on an outing with my Campfire group. We were exploring nature and digging around at a nature area in California. I turned over a rock and there was a lizard under it probably hibernating. I didn't even think it was alive. I picked it up and put it in my bag of collections. Later when I got back to our picnic area we all took time to share our items that we found. When I opened my bag the lizard ran up my arm and into my shirt pocket. I was astonished. I kept the lizard and fed it for a few days but I ended up letting it free since I knew it was not right to keep it captive.

My cat is an indoor cat so I don't have that problem, but it's kind of weird when the lizards crawl across the window screen. Kitty loves that.

My older dog, though, brought in a frog in her mouth once. I was 8 mos. pregnant, and my husband was out of town. It was dark outside and inside was dark too as I just had the TV on. I let my dog inside from doing her business and she spit out what I thought was one of her many tennis balls. I thought I should roll it out of the way with my bare foot so I wouldn't trip over it. Boy was I surprised. I was on the phone with my mom and when I realized what was beneath my foot I said a swear word and got the dog's frisbee and flicked the frog out the door and washed my foot and the floor with Lysol.

Love you, love your show. Happy Earth Day!

My cats also are major lizard hunters. I try to discourage it, as lizards are great at holding down unwanted insects around the house (including roaches !). However, it is our female Tee Boo's only exercise.
Did you know that the common lizards we see around are not geckos, as most people think, but are actually anoles ? When you see them turning brown they are stressed. And recently one of my "companions" brought the largest(unfortunately deceased)anole I have ever seen to the back porch; an inch in diameter and easily six inches long. It was the mother (or father, I didn't really check) of anoles ! I didn't bring the poor carcass in and it was gone the next day; most likely supper for one of the varmints in the area. Wish I had brought it in now, although I doubt it really would have been appreciated at "show and tell".

The cats are bringing the lizards into the house as a gift/present to you. First they play with them, and after that they leave them at your feet usually (or in my mom's case, in her sneakers inside her closet.....SUPRISE! and EEEEWWWWW!). They want you to see that they are great hunters and that they got "this gift" for you. All they're basically looking for after a live toy play session is just a "Good kitty. You are a master of your universe and yard. What a smart, good little kitty". So now you know and don't have to wonder anymore. ;-)

Ellen, just a little note to say I think you are great! I was having a really bad day today, you know the kind where you put the covers over your head and boo hoo.... (OK Maybe you don't). Anyway I made myself get up and turn your show on, and before I knew it I was laughing. (Thank you). Then I went out for a long walk and greeted as many people as I could with a Hello, and have a good day.

Thank you again,

Are you sure that the lizards are not using the cats for racing. When you are away from home the lizards may be using the cats, instead of horses, for racing. I heard that this is the newest fad in Southern CA. Betting to see which cats are the fastest. I understand that the only way to catch them at it is by videotaping them.

Hi Ellen,

California has a several types of lizards and at my house one walked in by itself. My cat doesn’t go outside so she couldn’t have brought it in, but maybe she sent her an invitation.

A lizard wandered into my bedroom, I saw it because it was ‘playing dead’ until I tried to pick it up and she ran. I decided to capture it so that I could set it free, assuming that it didn’t just decide to move in. I used the trimmings from house plants and a thin, clear plastic top from a yogurt container for water, it was a little oasis. The difficult part of this was keeping my cat out of the room because I think she might think that lizards taste like chicken.

A few days later I walked into the room, heard the leaves move and felt whole-hearted joy: She was alive! With the mouth of a jar pointed towards the bunch of leaves, I quickly removed them and herded her into the jar with my hand and released her back into the garden area.

Ellen, I wish that lizard let me pick her up, it would have saved me the guilt of keeping my cat out of my bedroom because she likes to sleep with me.

You’re the best and very, very funny, Ellen: Love ya!

Happy Earth Day!

ELLEN! (I LOVE YOU!) The strings are too SHORT for the marshmallow game! It's not fair that short people have to reach for those short-stringed marshmallows! The strings should be measured according to the height of the contestants. And if the contestants had any sense, they'd BLOW on the marshmallows to make them swing BACK to them! Wish I could be there! LOL!
