My Thought...And I Do Have One

SHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Today I’d like to talk about librarians. I don’t know how many of them watch my show. If they do, they probably watch my show while reading or working on the Dewey Decimal System. They probably don’t watch much TV at all. They just wait for the transcripts. If they do watch the show, they probably keep the sound turned down and put their fingers up to their mouths and say, “Shhhhhhhh” every time the audience laughs.

Librarians are the opposite of cheerleaders. At the library, if you make any noise, they deal with you immediately. First you get the silent, “How dare you?” look. If that doesn’t work, they give you the universal zip the lip signal. And if that doesn’t work, they do the lock up the lips and throw away the key move. I always trick them. I pretend to throw away the key, but keep it in my hand and slip it in my pocket. I’m sure I’m gonna get some phone calls from angry librarians. Of course, I won’t be able to hear what they are saying.

Have you ever been yelled at by a librarian? It tickles. I bet when they go out at night, librarians are totally different. It’s probably something like “Librarians Gone Wild.” I bet its just like the “Whitesnake” video. You remember the video? They take their glasses off, the wind starts blowing in their hair and end up on the hood of a Camaro. ..It’s because they can’t see. They think it’s their bed.

It's been years since librarians shussshed anybody.

People talk out loud at the library all the time, in fact the librarians are the loudest talkers.

You are in desperate need of somebody to write your material for you and make it more realistic.

Ellen!

You should seek having your show at a local library! The Los Angeles Library has more than a couple of adventures...Or, how about the fantastic Cerritos Library..wonderful places!

You should do that and enjoy all the cheering by your audience and put weights on all the shushing fingers!

Librarians are some of the loudest people I know and yes we do more than read. I select DVDs for my library. Ellen may not be aware that libraries carry these types of items as she may not have been in one for years.
I agree she would make an awesome librarian because she is personable, friendly, funny, likes to share information freely and likes to dance.

Ellen would make a GREAT librarian. Smart. Sassy. Sensible shoes. Boring clothes.

People, people...calm down. Maybe your cardigans are buttoned too tight around the neck, but come on. Laugh. It is funny.

Ellen, when was the last time you went to the library??? We aren't that uptight here at the library that I work at. Very funny though. You and Peggy Hill have it right about librarians being some beautiful people. And I have had a Whitesnake moment myself. We are all much more interesting outside the library, even if it isn't late at night. I'm just a page, not quite a book at the Austin Public Library. hee hee :) I do watch your show w/ the sound on and I laugh out loud. Cheers!!!

Yes, it is true, we are wild....

Sarcasm ... it is another public service WE offer, too! It is not just relegated to talk show hosts and comedians. Ha ha ha ... you sure know how to kid the kidders!

Tell you what, you walk in our shoes for a day and work with us as we serve the public in any public library of your choice and we will do your show for a day with you! I keep thinking daytime talk show hosts are vapid and self-serving. I must be correct if I say so here, eh?

Ha ha ha ... you crack me up. I used to watch you in your "early" stand-up days, too. I still think you are pretty funny, despite your misconceptions of others' jobs.

On a related note, I think you would make a great librarian. Why not try it for a week? I bet there's looooots of libraries that would happily show you the ropes.

Nice, I hope whatever comes out of this it involves crazy lesbian librarians with big tatoos that drive harleys. If you need recommendations, I know a few.

Hey Ellen.

You forgot two of our favorite pastimes for when us librarians are off the clock: helping teenage girls fight vampires, and keeping some Jokers from taking over our respective cities, countries and the world!

Funny; but an outdated stereotype, Ellen! I watch your show when I'm not working at a high-school library or the local public library. We function more like a community resource center than university or academic libraries.

Libaries today feature (largely) state-of-the-art technology for academic and personal research as well as pleasure reading FREE! FOR EVERYONE!! OH, I mean when times are good and the government has money to spare...Otherwise, libraries are among the first to suffer cutbacks.

Give us a good word, Ellen! Let the people know that not all reference librarians continue to represent the stodgy, uptight models of the past! The current economic climate doesn't support us, and we can answer questions about where to find almost anything. FREE. What a concept.

Still your fan anyway...

I work in a public library with children. I have actually asked parents that they try NOT to shush their kids (unless they want to)...because I'm not worried about noise. Our kid's room is cooler than Vegas! What happens under the rainbow stays under the rainbow. I love your show and would love to see any talk show daytime or late night do a segment on libraries. We are highly mockable, even though we no longer try to shush the world at large. Libraries get overlooked frequently, and can be some of the first things cut in budgets...we'd love to show everyone how much fun can be found at libraries! With the economy in the crapper, we are more necessary than ever.

Ellen-

LOL...great.Come to my library, I'll be happy to shush you ;).
