My Trendy Lunch

Today for lunch I am having some tasty tilapia tacos on romaine lettuce with mango salsa and Asian mache salad.

I don't know what tilapia looks like in the wild. I probably walk by tilapias all day long and don't even know it. I'm not sure what a whole mango looks like. I think they grow on trees. I don't think tilapia grows on trees. If I ever come across a tilapia orchard, I will immediately admit my error. I don't think tilapias or mangos come from around here. I don't remember any childhood stories about "Johnny Mango Seed." If there are any stories about Johnny Mango Seed, I feel bad that he was so overshadowed by Johnny Apple Seed. Johnny Mango Seed is probably sitting out in front of a retirement home right now complaining. "It was my idea to cross the country spreading fruit seeds! Why, if I ever get my hands on Apple Seed, I'll make cider out of him!"

I only recently remember ever eating mache. It must be the new trendy leafy green. Every year there are new lettuces that I have never heard of. There must be some kind of spring lettuce fashion show where all the salad designers trot out their new creations. I hear dandelion greens are making a big comeback in Paris. Maybe I'll stop by my salad boutique on the way home from work.

I hope your lunch is as delicious and trendy as mine.

I'm sure Ellen knows about fishes and mangoes. She's an intelligent woman! Let's make some enjoyment when sending comments and pretend that it's as if where informing Ellen eventhough she knows about it already.(Ellen wouldn't take it badly, she enjoys knowing other people's thoughts.) Relax and have fun!

Ellen,
I have seen that someone has told you that Tilapia is a fish. I love fish tacos but I do not eat tilapia anymore because of what they eat. I was watching a Dirty Jobs episode with Mike Rowe and he was at a fish farm and the tilapia ate the other fishes' poop. Ever since that show I have not been able to eat tilapia.

Well, enough about that crap.:)

I just want to give you a comment that I am sure you get everyday; you are a blast to watch. Living in the Chicago suburbs, it gets pretty cold here and since December 1st we have had snow on the ground and needless to say I am getting quite depressed. I am ready for the heat. But when I watch your show you always make me laugh and for an hour I forget about the cold. So thank you for helping me get through this long winter.

Your interesting and varied lunches are instuctive. However, I'll stick with our family food tradition-- grilled cheese served with peach or Pears (must be canned). The sandwich must be dunked in the juice to get the absolute best effect. It was about the only thing my dad could make and I've tried to make sure my kids pass on the tradition. Do you have any family food traditions? I guess I like weird combinations. I could make a whole meal out of baked winter squash and tart cranberry sauce. I've also been known to eat the following;

sandwich with any kind of meat[ham, roast beef, pork tenderloin, with dijon mustard and cold slices of a tart crisp apple.

sandwich layered as follows -- bread, peanut butter, rasp. jam, bologna, dijon mustard, bread. especially good when you can't make up your mind what you want to eat but for some reason other people think its gross.

As a kid we dunked our bologna sandwiches in lemon Kool-aid. We thought it was gr-r-re-eat!!

Keep up with your sense of humor and friendly demeanor. It is fun to watch daily.

Ellen forgot to tell you Tuesday Mornings has great table cloths, and placemats. They have some really great colors, and plastic cups are out. Get some of the new exciting plastic patio sets,if you are not trusted with glass. I can understand,I don't get to use glass often either always break it or drop it.
thanks,

Ellen,
I live in Cortland,NY. Just checked out your lunch today. We have a talapia fish farm close to us. My daughter use to work there. She learned to bar-b-que them and cook them. I can almost say I like them. When I visited the farm it smelled awful, big tanks of fish. Not an apitizing smell either. Will try your taco, maybe that will give me a new use for it.
thanks,
Midge

Hey Ellen,
why is it that the lunches you show us (however strange they are sometimes) never have any garnish?
would it hurt to add a little sprig of mint or some tomatoe rosets? You're ELLEN for god sakes!
just a thought.

Oh- by the way, Ellen-
I think you need nicer table-things! YOU'RE A STAR! Send someone to 'Linens-and-Things', tell them to invest in some NICE napkins and a tablecloth! Then, tell em to duck into Tiffany's and pick you up some Sterling Silver utensils! Don't be shy, you've earned it....and everybody knows: "Mango tastes better when you eat it off a $100 fork...."
Love ya, Dear Lady- Have a Krispy Kreme on me!!

Ellen- those talapia tacos are ok, I guess- but I just had a fried-fish product sandwich at Mickey D's- probably not healthy at all, but I wolfed it down, along with a jumbo fries and a bucket of Coke---every once in awhile ya just gotta treat yourself!!! (OK, now I can't have anything but water with lemon for the rest of the week....LOL, just kiddin'!)
Love you, Dear Girl- Have an Oreo on me!

Ellen knows that mango is a tree fruit and that tilapia is a fish. She's just being funny when she says things like tilapia orchard! She doesn't need a real explanation!

Hi Ellen! What's up? Just would like to give you an idea of a tilapia. Tilapia is a fish being cultured here in the Philippines. I'm not sure about other tilapia farms out there that fed tilapias w/ poo. But i'm pretty sure that here in our country, breeders feed them with fish food. We also have lots of mangoes here in the Philippines. Yes, they grow on trees! Haha! It's one of our tropical fruits here. You wouldn't wanna know how it looks like because it has lots of varieties. We have indian, apple and horse mangoes. I wouldn't like you to confuse yourself with how it looks like.

Have a great day ahead!

Hi Ellen,

All of the talk about food, mangos and bananas is making me thirsty! I spent several summers on Block Island, RI mixing drinks and thought this invention of mine, inspired by the previous postings, would be rather tasty:

Bamanga Momma

I suggest:

1. Mango or mango sorbet (Haggen-Dazs is good.)

2. A large ripe banana.

3. Lots of ice cubes.

4. I would add vodka. Leave yourslef open for the suggestions of other alternatives though, such as: lemon flavored vodka, rum, tequila, or Captain Morgan’s Dark Spiced Rum.
(I think vodka and Captain Morgan’s sounds the best, although lemon flavored vodka might be interesting, I haven't tried that.)

5. Assemble all of the ingredients into a large blender and press the puree button.

6. Then adjust to your personal preference and drink -up!

Bon Appetit!

Hi Ellen:
I think I would go on a fast if I was served this for lunch. Maybe a nice fresh fruit salad with some yogurt. How about some shrimp cocktail or something along those lines?

Ellen,

I was watching 'Dirty Jobs' and they went to a talapia farm. Those fish actually feed only on fish poo. Icky, Yuk!

Fish is good for you, just stay away from that one!

Ellen, you are a cool person. But tilapia is not cool, it's farmed and bad for the ocean and sealife. And Darin is way cool! Vegetarian is the way to go!!! SAVE THE ANIMALS & SAVE THE EARTH!
