My Lunch Manners

My lunch today is a filet mignon on a bed of arugula with tomatoes, olives and balsamic vinaigrette dressing. You'll notice that I will be using a steak knife with my lunch. You know it's a fancy lunch when the specialty utensils come out. I'm not sure if this is a salad fork or a regular fork, but I'm wondering, since this is basically a steak salad, if it's ok to eat my steak with my salad fork? What would Miss Manners say? Can I use my steak knife on my tomato? Is there such a thing as a tomato knife?

You know what has not caught on in fine dining? The spork. You know those plastic spoon/fork combos you sometimes get at fast food restaurants? Just 1 spork instead of all those other forks and spoons would get rid of a lot of future embarrassment at fancy restaurants everywhere. Of course, there will still be the embarrassment that comes when that crumb waiter shows up and scrapes about a pound of crumbs from next to your plate, but I'm working on that.

Hi Ellen! Gosh, I love going through all the stuff on your website! Please, have your chef write a salad w/dressings cookbook your fans can purchase! Gee, some of your lunches sound so good, and all of them have fabulous eye-appeal! Some of the dressings sound marvelous, and mouth-watering! If all your meals are so lovely, nourishing, and healthy, it's no wonder you are such a babe! Love ya lots!

Ellen,

What an awesome lunch! It sure looks delicious, HEY I would by a cookbook if you sold one especially if the money went to New Orleans, my husband is from Metairie, just like you! His parents still live there, and miss a lot of places that they would frequent before the storm. Hey Ellen, why don't you open up an Ellen's Diner or something and have a portion of the profits go to Katrina relief? You could do it, you would only have to purchase one of the properties in one of the areas that still need more eateries, which is still a huge market. Most people just can't afford to come back due to lack of funding. But Ellen you could do it, hire some of the chefs that have lost their jobs due to the hurricane and bring back some of that wonderful seafood that we all miss when we go to New Orleans.

Just do it Ellen! You will make a lot of people happy, which you are so good at doing!!!!

Hey Ellen, Think your personal chef should write a cookbook, Ellen's Lunch. Could publish it and all proceeds go to the New Orleans rebuilding fund. All your lunches look so delectible, would love to try them at home. Whaaaaaat!?!?!? Probably a lot of others would like to try them too. Think it would sell!! Eileen

Hi Ellen,

Just wanted to thank you for eating beef!

I want to invite you and the gang to our cattle ranch this spring for our round-up! It's alot of fun ! ( And we could always use another ranch hand!)

Our ranch is in the foothills above Fresno, near Yosemite.

Have a great day, and thanks for making me smile!

Ellen, you should try the "Knork" - it is a single utensil that combines a knife and a fork. That way, you do not need to worry about what Miss Manners or anyone else thinks. It allows you to use one side to cut and even though it does not contain any sharp edges, it supposedly is better than a Steak knife! Try it out and let us know if if really works! www.knork.net

Hey Ellen, your lunch looks delectable as usual. Yes there is such a thing as a tomato knife, I have one and it works wonderful. Speaking of a "spork" remember back in the 70's they came out with some kind of canned meat called spork, similar to spam that was in a can. One more question I have, does Portia eat lunch with you at work? Have a good one and remember to Breathe, Believe and Receive, Peace out

Miss Ellen: About which fork to use, think of it this way...Starting from the outside of a set table your fork tines (those spikey parts of the fork) tell you which to use. Two tines shrimp like food or such nonsense in a shell which usually is in the beginning of the meal, three tines will more than likely be a salad or any leafy dish before the main course, four tines your entree (aka filet mignon) with maybe a steak knife unless you want to grab it with your fingers and eat eat eat and ENJOY! *PEACE*

Nice, healthy, how about some fried pickles and crab legs!!!! That is a Windjammer special on the Isle of Palms in Charleston, SC. Anyway, yes there are tomato knives but you use them in food prep. I guess you could eat with it just don't put the mouth in your mouth or it is also a tongue knife. Yes you cut your tomato with the steak knife and you should not put your knife or fork down through out the meal except to pick up a drink glass. It is ok to eat with the big fork too. The salad fork is placed on the table when there are many courses, in that case use the salad fork. I really prefer my fingers but you have the cutlery and posed the questions so there!!!

Here I am back again with my wine commentary. Where is your glass of nice red wine with your steak? I mean, hopefully it would be nice. I'll bet you'd really feel nice after drinking it.
Perhaps you could sip it with a straw. We could call this method if sipping wine through a straw, Swine, but that doesn't really sound too nice, does it? This technique would fit right into your category of the Spork. It just goes on and on!
And I haven even had any wine yet!
Happy Birthday to ya!
