Hello Ellen,
I stumbled across your christmas tree questions when I googled, "can i put my christmas tree in a bucket of sand?"

In reference to your questions of when do you put your tree up, I am late this year, usually the day after Thanksgiving. However, I am putting it up right now. 12/15

And now for the #1 question, when do I take it down, well right now it has only been up for 2 hours and it is on it's way out the door unless my husband goes to home depot and buys a bucket of sand. LOL

Moral of the story: NEVER buy a $7.00 tree stand.
Love you, Love your show.
Dawn and my daughter, Alexis

Ellen,

For the last 2 years, our Christmas trees (which are real) have been growing new branches. I don't put anything in the water. Maybe it is our lousy water that makes it thrive!!! I put it up the first weekend of December and by the time New Year's Day comes around, we have new green branches sprouting. I think it is amazing.

Hope you and your family have a wonderful and joyous season and hope you get to have George Clooney under your Christmas tree!!!!!

I left my tree up one year until Halloween, and then my husband insisted I take it down. I told him if I did, it wasn't going back up that year, and it didn't.

Ellen,

This was our first winter in the cold climate and I was lazy at first and set the tree ( stand and all) on the patio, then it still was alive, again and again, week after week and still looked pretty darn good! I left it there as an experiment with my son ( age 9) ntil my wife's mother thought we were all crazy and my wife was complaining daily. Needless to say, it stayed in good condition until tax day April 15th! I'll never get by with that again! My mother in law now believes that an ivy league education is not an indicator of common sence.

Dear Ellen
Thank you for giving me an outlet to express opinions and just release the stress of the day.

Today I finally got around to taking the three down and putting away the christmas decorations. usually I wait until the needles start to fall I just love the smell of the dry needles. The reason I took the three down early is because I decided to get a Martha Stewart tree this year. This is the first time in twenty something years We did'nt have a real tree. I missed the smell of the pine needles so much. oh well

Ellen...
I have the best Christmas tree pictures for you, unfortunately, I cannot scan them to send them on to you. We went to a tree farm a few years back and cut down our very first real tree! What a great time. When we got home, we did the ceremonial rope cutting to release it... IT WAS A BUSH - in fact TWO bushes grown together! It was wider than it was tall!! THEN, we left it up until after the new year and by then all of the needles that were left on the tree were now brown and my husband had to cut it apart in our living room in order to take it out of the house. It wouldn't fit through the door! Holy cow, I wish you could see these pictures. PLEASE write back to me for any ideas on how to get these to you quickly. You will have a blast with them, I promise.

Hey Ellen, I was off from work the day you were discussing Christmas trees because the weather was awful here in the great state of NY. I never laughed so hard. My mom LOVES Christmas trees and she puts them up the first or second week in December and even managed to keep it up until Easter one year. I don't know how she does it but her trees will actually grow. After they cut the tree down they would let it sit outside for a day or two, bring it in the house and let it sit for another day in water then they would decorate it. I remember growing up she would water it every day and every morning she would turn the lights on the tree get her coffee turn on the Christmas music and just stare at her tree. Maybe trees are like plants and if you talk and love them they prosper. As for me, mine only last a couple weeks past Christmas. My mom must not have passed on the tree nurturing trait.

Hello Ellen

This year im afraid my children will not have a christmas tree...I have recently moved and my finances are deep in a hole. Our tree is stuck in a storage unit, and have no $ to pay for it to get it out...but we will be watching your show everyday...so we will have your tree right in our living room...
thank you so much for being a part of our lives on a daily basis..

Hi there Ellen,

The other day on the show you asked for people to give you ideas on how to keep a Christmas Tree alive. Well, down here in Australia, we usually buy plastic / artificial trees. They last forever!! We put ours up in November and leave it up until after New Years. We stick it in a box and hide it away until next Christmas. We don't get pine needles everywhere, and we don't have to worry about going tree hunting every year. As you can tell, we're a little lazy here in OZ!!

By the way, love ya show! Keep 'em coming.

Karen

Ellen, I am trying to find an artificial tree. I heard that you recommended a certain brand. I have searched your website and cannot find it. Do you give the beautiful trees on your set to a needy family or an organization when you are done filming?

Hi Ellen,
I think you are great and extremely funny. My father passed a great secret on to me about the Christmas tree. I put a roll of pennies in the Christmas tree water. I unwrap it of course but the cooper does its magic. I hope this helps. Keep on keepin' on!
