My Thought...And I Do Have One

KARAOKE

I went to a karaoke bar with some people from my show. You can learn a lot about your co-workers at a karaoke bar. It’s a real eye opener. People take on a whole new personality in karaoke bars. “Oh my, is that Helen from payroll singing “Hot in Here” in her bra?” People show sides of themselves that you’d never expect. Like when Mama blew away the crowd with her electrifying rendition of “Highway to Hell”? Like Vegas, I think that what happens at a karaoke bar, should stay at the karaoke bar. People do things that they’d never normally do. I think we’ve all seen it before. You have a little too much to drink, you walk up to the mike, Donna Summer’s “Hot Stuff” comes on, and the next day everyone is calling you a “fallen woman.”

Hi Ellen,
I used to always sing Joan Jett's "I love Rock and Roll" when I would go out to Karaoke bars. I once won a contest singing it. Now, when I listen to the words, I find it difficult to sing. Seriously, I have a stepson who is going to be seventeen in February. Gross! So, now that we have singstar, I just sing. It feels good to sing! And dance...by the way! Keep dancing!
Love ya, Terry

I remember just after I got married that Labatts was sponsoring a show at the bar my husband use to go to often. All I wanted is this really neat shirt that said "Enter the blue zone" and they told me I had to sing for it. Well after a few shots of this and a few more of that - I got up on stage and belted out "Chantilly Lace". The worst part - it was not only on video, but cassette. Copies were made of that cassette. After a couple of moves, I can't find any of them and I am hoping no one else can either. The kids weren't even around then as we had just been married for a couple of weeks. No need for them to see that.

Hi Ellen,
Do you REALLY read all these comments? or does someone pick the 'best ones' and print them for you to read? I just wanted to say that I don't think being a lesbian is right, but as a person, you are HILARIOUS! You make me laugh really hard. You are probably one of the best comedians out there. Uh oh, you rank up there with Jeff Foxworthy and Larry the Cable Guy, Bill Engval, etc... I am from TN. And you know Jeff Foxworthy ROCKS! I like him because he isn't vulgar or anything. No, I'm not 'some stuffy old granny' I'm only 31 and have a husband who is 27 and a baby who will be 10 months - WOWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!! - I just realized she will be 10 months old TOMORROW!! Well, have a nice day!

During the time of the "strike" would it be possible for you to do the Lone Ranger routine that Andy Kaufman did on (I think) The Tonight Show many years ago. I think you could do that so well. I would like to see your rendition of that routine.
Thank you,

Ellen,
Back in the early 90's, when I worked for the FAA in Orlando, out office was know for happy hours. I can't remember what night was karaoke, if that tells you anything. My song was Be Good To Me by Tina Turner. I'm white and at the time in my 40's. I had already been up and sang and I had had a few and wanted to leave. The whole place started chanting my name. Needless to say, I put on a performance. I did that song and they had the disco ball turning and smoke coming out and I thought I was the next Tina Turner. I found out later I wasn't that great. I haven't been to a karaoke bar since. I would come on your show and do it for you.
Love You Always
Ellen

Dear Helen,

A "fallen woman" is not exactly how you are being characterized after giving Wayne Newton that serious heart problem in Vegas! Maybe you should reconsider the gay thing or, for the sake of the male species, steer clear of Vegas in the future!!

so this one time I wound up at a karaoke bar with some friends and after everyone else took a turn they started nagging me. I told them I can't sing. "oh, come on, you can't be THAT bad and we all made fools of ourselves so you have to too..." and on it went. Finally I said "Ok, you asked for it" and started looking through the song choices. Hmmm...American Pie. I like that one. So...remember American Pie? That is one long song. It must have like 20 verses. I mean it just goes on and on and on. Afterwards my friends said, "Wow, you really are THAT bad!"
Anyway, my advice is if anyone like me finds herself succumbing to karaoke pressure, do yourself a favor and pick a short song. ANY song...so long as it is short.

Treating Ms. Puerto Rico that way was horrible, I felt so bad for her. You guys would never be mean or disrespectful that way, for example, to Martha Stewart. I know it was meant to be funny, but in this case judgement was lacking. Laughs should not be obtained at the expense of unsuspecting guests, especially one that is newly starting out and trying to be taken seriously. More sensitivity was needed.

I guess I could actually comment on Karaoke, considering that is what Ellen's original thought is about. Haha. I was just having trouble having ANY of my comments accepted so I was just leaving them anywhere I could. Sorry everyone.

I do sing Karaoke and LOVE it. I love to sing and my favorite song to sing is Sweet Child O'Mine. I don't really have a funny story yet but if I think hard enough, I'm sure I'll remember one.

I'll keep you posted.

(I'm sure you guys really care. haha)
