Iggy

People say to me a lot how do you do this show if you’re in a bad mood? How do you do your show if you’re sad or, don’t you have bad days? I’m a human being and I have bad days and I have sad days. But when I walk out here and you all cheer and when you’re here to dance, you’re here to laugh and I know I make people happy. It changes my mood. I come out here and I can do anything because of the energy I get.

But today is a hard day for me. Today is bad. I am not capable of coming out and pretending to be funny and on when things are going so terribly wrong right now.

I’m so sorry; I’m just not able to pretend. So I’m going to tell you the story. I’m going to get over it and we’re going to have a good show and we have a great show. So it’s going to be funny and it’s going to be everything that you turn the show on for.

Here’s what happened. I love animals. I love animals. I rescue them and I’ve adopted so many animals and found so many animals homes over the years. On September 20, I adopted a dog from a rescue organization here in the area. I got it neutered, I got it trained and I paid my vet extra money to take it home to sleep in the bed with him at night instead of a cage. I spent $3000 on this puppy to acclimate it, to train it to be with our cats. It was just too much energy and too rambunctious.

My hairdresser who I see every single day, she and her husband have two little girls, eleven and twelve-years-old. They were just looking for a puppy. They have a dog. They said, “We love Iggy can we have Iggy?”

Iggy has been with them for two weeks. I get updates every single day and pictures every day of how happy Iggy is and how much their daughters love Iggy. The organization contacted me yesterday and said, “How’s Iggy?” And I told them the truth. I didn’t lie. I said, “Iggy has a great home.”

Well, I guess I signed a piece of paper that says if I can’t keep Iggy, it goes back to the rescue organization. Which is not someone’s home, which is not a family. These two little girls had bonded to the dog. I thought I did a good thing. I tried to find a loving home for the dog because I couldn’t keep it. I was trying to do a good thing.

Because I did it wrong, those people went and took that dog out of their home, and took it away from those kids. (Wells up with tears). I feel totally responsible for it and I’m so sorry (sobbing) I’m begging them to give that dog back to that family. I just want the family to have their dog. It’s not their fault. It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have given the dog away. Just please give the dog back to those little girls.

I’m sorry I didn’t call you. I’m sorry I did the wrong thing. Just give it back to the family. Please please please.

That’s the story and that’s why I’m feeling like I am responsible for trying to do something and I did it without reading all the things I should have read. So I’m sorry.

(Changing the mood, takes a breath) What a great show we have for you today.

Hey Ellen,
I remember this show. I was watching, feeling so bad for you and for the situation. I'm glad I get a chance to comment. You're such a beautiful soul for feeling bad about this. It sounded like a horrible situation, and we need more people like you who will be honest to their fans like you are to yours. I love you Ellen! You're my favorite comedian/celebrity. You're amazing, and I hope you know that when you are feeling down like you did when this happened. And I can honestly say you are "Ellen The Generous" :]

Animal lover, Thanks for the support. I dont think that most people realize the magnitude of the homeless pet problem. Here on the east coast, or at least in my area, there are low cost spay and neuter programs as well as the spay a stray programs. The problem is that most people just keep making excuses. Of course all animals which are adopted through rescues are usually spayed or neutered before ever leaving their foster home. We do our best to help control the ever growing population of unwanted puppies and kittens. Even though over 10,000 dogs are killed in shelters each day, a new puppy is being born every 9 seconds. For each new puppy, another dog will have to die in a shelter. Its senseless to fight over Iggy. Regardless of each persons opinion about how it all went down, the sad fact is that he is just one of millions of abandoned animals who will either find a home or die waiting. Fostering is rewarding and frustrating at the same time. For each one we save, thousands more are left behind. Its hearbreaking but totally the fault of careless pet owners and breeders. Spaying and neutering IS the answer and a cheap and easy one at that. Now all we have to do is make it mandatory and we can finally beging to get control of the vast numbers of homeless animals. Every one of us can help.

Living It,
I totally agree with everything you wrote. Thank you for being a foster pet parent to the dogs literally on death row at the shelters. It is hard but rewarding work. I've done that before with cats and kittens. Currently I am doing the Trap-Neuter-Return Program,[TNR],for feral and stray kitties to help control the kitty population. If anybody would like more info about TNR please visit www.alleycat.org

I just have to say to anybody that reads this post, please take a short time out of your busy day to take your cat, dog, bunny, whatever precious pet you may have, to the vet if he, or she, isn't already spayed or neutered. And then you will never, ever have to worry about it again. It is just a one time surgery fee, sometimes even free. If you need help in finding a place that is low or no cost in your area, just leave me your hometown location and I will be happy to help. Here in Arizona it is free by simply sending in a one page application, then two weeks later you get a voucher in the mail to take your pet, or pets, to the vet you choose. There are low cost, or no cost, vet clinics everywhere.

Will be checking back periodically :) :)
Thanks for reading!

Last I heard, the dog was adopted into another home and is still there. Yvette, this is a public site and regardless of whose name is on it, it is open for public comments. Your precious Ellen and Portia made a decision not to keep the dog, so why should they care what happens to it? The rescue was the one who save him from the dog pound when he was sickly and they are the ones who took him back into their rescue when he was rejected by his adopters. It doesnt matter who they were, what matters is they chose not to keep him and their contract said he goes back to the rescue if he cant remain in to home he was adopted into. This is standard in almost ALL rescue contracts, ask around, I did. If children and celebrities werent involved, nobody would have given a hoot what happened to the scruffy little dog. Over 10,000 dogs are killed in shelters every year because they dont get adopted. How many have you adopted?? Quit fighting for the little dog who has a family now and do something to save at least one of the ones whose life is in jeopardy right now. I do every day. I am a foster home for a rescue organization and right now I have 5 extra dogs in my home. Give it a try, you might change your views on who is the best home for the lives in YOUR hands.

soo, what happened with this? does anyone know if the kids got their (it's theirs...) dog back??
it's been almost a year since this happend!

kisses

Ok you people that seem to think they didn't WANT iggy are completely wrong. Do you not remember the story? They wanted him, but it wasn't working with the rest of their animals and she couldn't give him the attention that the puppy needed. She was upset because the dog was taken away from two little girls!! GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!!!!! and get off the web site haters this isn't perezhilton.com this is ellen.com

Bobbi, You're right, adopting a child isnt the same and the laws are different. If a child loses a parent or nobody wants them, they dont go into a shelter and risk being gassed to death if they dont get re adopted in a few days. Rescuers take their mission very seriously and just want to make sure that if the adoption doesnt work out, the animal can be found a new home and wont ever face losing their life in a shelter situation. We screen people to make sure that the match will be a good one and the animal isnt returned to us because they made a mistake as in Ellen's case. If Ellen's hairdresser had been willing to go through the same screening process as any other adopter instead of relying on her friendship with Ellen to carry weight, she probably would have ended up with Iggy. The whole situation was handled poorly but in the end, Iggy was adopted and hopefully now lives a good life.

Ellen or whom it may concern,
My girlfriend and I went to adopt a kitten yesterday and were turned down by this one adoption agency here in Colorado because I have a cat who is declawed. They said they won't any of their cats go to someone who would declaw an animal. I explained that I had no intention of declawing the new kitten, but they subtly let us know we were not welcome to take any of their kittens home with us. I feel like we were unfairly judged, and I feel sorry for the animals that are caught in the middle of their self-serving animal rights politics. They are doing the animals an injustice by being overly judgmental and discriminating! Most of those animals would be better off without them!

Hi Ellen:

I think what you did with Iggy is the most amazing thing anyone could have done. Are you telling me that if I was to adopt a child from an ophange (I know an animal isn't a child, but to some people their pets are like their children)and something should happen to me, does it mean that the child has to go back there? and not to a family member? I would hope not. If this was such a rescue place that they claim to be? then they should be happy that a loving family has taken in the pup.
I am finding this so hard to believe that the owner of the rescue facility can sleep at night, knowing what they did.
Ellen don't ever change who you are for a measly piece of paper. I hope that if you had to do it again you would do nothing different.
We love you here in Canada Ellen.

Take care.

Bobbi

It amazes me that everyone still feels sorry for Ellen. WHY? They didnt want the dog so they gave it way (in breech of a contract they signed saying they wouldnt do that) They werent broken hearted when they gave him away so why should they care if the rescue took it back? They DIDNT want it!!

Ellen you shouldn't blame yourself for what happened to Iggy. You are a woman with feelings and clearly the people who work at the place where you adopted Iggy can't see that and they clearly didn't consider your feelings before they took that dog away from the loving home.

We have no reason to be sorry about Iggy. If you remember, all this started because they didnt want him in the first place. He is now with a family that DID want him. Just be happy that a homeless animal got a family of his own and let the rest go.

It is amazeing that people are still comenting on what happened months ago... We are all extreamly sorry about iggy, but I hope Portia make you feel tons better.

I love the Ellen's Thoughts! You crack me up!! Do you crack up while you're writing them? If I were you, I would be.
