Ellen:
I love your show and tape it every day and watch it when I get home. You are the very best talk show host ever, and so compassionate, honest, funny, informative - I could go on and on. You are the greatest!!
I have a very important request: I recentlymet a gentleman locally here in Metairie, LA. His story is so sad, and this man really needs help. I am asking you to please help him. I will try to make this concise. He served 2 years in Viet Nam, was shot in the head, left for dead and even had the tag on his toe and waiting for the black bag to be zipped up and left for dead, waiting for his heart to stop. Well, his heart never stopped, so the military doctors finally took him into surgery. He went through many surgeries and many rehabilitations to learn to walk again. But he cannot use his left hand at all. He is alive now after many many operations and rehabilitation. He was shot in the right side of his brain, and has lost all use of his left arm and limps. But the spunk and toughness that this man has is incredible. Anyway, he was married about 22 years. He had his own band, doing very well, and he plays the keyboard with one hand, and his wife Iat the time) sang in the band. After 22 years of marriage, his wife left him for his drummer, who was his very best friend. Alpha was totally unaware what was going on, and was totally devastated. although all members of the band knew. In April of 2005 they separated and divorced. In August 2006, he lost EVERYTHING he ever owned in Katrina in Chalmette, LA. Everything including all of his band equipment, keyboards, speakers, micrphones, etc, - just lost it all. Not only did he lose his wife, and then the band disbanded because of this awful disgrace and deceitfulness, and let down by all of his band members, he lost his only income, as well as his wife's income, having lost his band members and all equipment. His 3 children went to live with him, at their wishes, and he has been struggling financially ever since. He is buying a very run-down house in Metairie/Kenner, La., and is stuggling to keep up with the bills and feed his children, the youngest of which is still in high school. I met this very nice gentleman about 1 1/2 months ago. He is one of the nicest, kindest, good-hearted, and uplifting person I have ever met in my entire life. Yes, we all lost something in Katrina (I lost my husband), but this man lost absolutely everything, and is struggling so bad to make it day to day and month to month. Hardly enough money to buy food, pay the house note, and other necessities. The house needs so much work, the carpets are filthy, actually too bad to be cleaned, needs painting, sheetrock falling down - but he says he has a roof over his head and has a good attitude. Since I met him, I have been his very good friend, and have been basically feeding he and his family and helping out whenever and wherever I can. On top of all of this, he has a "homeless" 31-year old guy staying with him because he has no place to go. He told me tonight he got road home money in amount of $124,000, but after the attorneys got their money, he wound up with 24,000 only. This man hardly has any clothes, 2 pairs of very old and wet shoes, still wearing clothes that were given to him during Katrina. He has the bare necessities. Ellen, I am asking you to please help this man in any way you can as soon as possible. He is so worried that his children will not have a Christmas. He is a wonderful father. He is an injured and handicapped Viet Nam Veteran, but through it all, he has a sense of humor and goes with the flow. But I know he worries inside. I am helping him as much as I possibly can. I lost my husband, and had 2 inches of water in my home, but I'm okay now. I was laid off in February but I am making it and dont need help. Alpha needs help. I ask you so much to find it in your hear to help Alpha DeRouen financially as much as you can, and somehow help him get those old dirty carpets that went through Katrina out of that house. They are living in mold and mildew and filthy carpets. I am going to go vacuum his carpets and attempt to steam clean them until he can afford to buy new carpets. (The carpets are deplorable, I'm not sure they can be cleaned at all.) I do know he is a very loving and great father to his children, and his children come first. That's why Alpha is doing without. Alpha cooks with one hand, chops seasoning with one hand, he plants and gardens with one hand, he cleans and mops floors with one hand. He is amazing and probably the best and most humble and honest gentleman I have every met.
Since we met, he loves to just go riding around Metairie, and Kenner and Uptown, just to see our beautiful City Of New Orleans coming back slowly.
Ellen, Please find it in your heart to help Alpha renovate his home, or in some way help him financially. He is presently trying to get another band together. He has his "plate full"!! It takes me meeting Alpha to realize just how lucky I am. I can only help with groceries and cooking.
Please feel in your heart to help Alpha. He needs help so much. He does not know I am writing to you. You are the first person I thought of to ask him for help. Please open your heart to Alpha and his family.
Thanking you so much for listening to Alpha's story and I look forward to hearing from you.
Alpha does not know I have written this letter, No one knows except me and you.
Thank you Ellen for whatever you can do for Alpha DeRouen.
Thanks, and love and God Bless You!
